Laura Kastner, Ph.D.
Laura Kastner, Ph.D, will review some of the “best practices” in parenting over the
last 50 years and highlight recent research findings in the field that are game
changers. Did you know that compared to IQ scores, self-control is twice as
predictive of success in adulthood? Did you know that intelligence and will power
are like muscles that need to be worked, but not overworked? Learn parenting
skills that can make a huge difference in how your teen turns out in terms of strong
character, stable relationships, and successful academic performance.
Dr. Kastner is a clinical professor in the departments of Psychology and Psychiatry
and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington. She is the co-author of
four books on adolescent development and has written many parenting articles.
She also has a private practice in which she sees children, couples, and families.

Our 2014-2015 speaker series will conclude with a focus on boys.
The Mask You Live In
Tuesday, March 10, 2015
LAHS Eagle Theater at 7pm
The Mask You Live In, a film premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2015, examines how
America’s narrow definition of masculinity is harming boys, men, and society at large. Research shows
that boys in the U.S. are more likely than girls to be diagnosed with a behavior disorder, prescribed
stimulant medications, fail out of school, binge drink, commit a violent crime, and/or take their own
lives. We will follow the film with a discussion moderated by Dr. Jerry Shapiro. The following link is to a

Ryan McKelley, Ph.D.
Unmasking Masculinity: Helping Boys Become Connected Men
Thursday, April 16, 2015
MVHS Spartan Theatre at 7pm
Dr. Ryan McKelley is an associate professor of clinical counseling psychology at the University of
Wisconsin-La Crosse. He will be talking about the impact of societal norms on boys that cause them to
mask their emotions of joy, compassion, sympathy, fear, and vulnerability. To counter this trend, Dr.
McKelley argues we need to teach boys about the richness and importance of social connection.
