D ear friends in Sacred Heart: This is the last Sunday of the first part in Ordinary Time. Lent begins this coming Wednesday with the distribution of ashes. Here are some things we need to keep in mind. The distribution of ashes reminds us of our own mortality and calls us to repentance. In the early Church, Ash Wednesday was the day on which those who had sinned, and who wished to be readmitted to the Church, would begin their public penance. The ashes that we receive are a reminder of our own sinfulness, and many Catholics leave them on their foreheads all day as a sign of humility. © J.S. Paluch Co., This year for Ash Wednesday we will have in Sacred Heart the following schedule: 8:00 am – Regular Mass 10:00 am – School Mass 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm – Prayer Service at 1:00 pm followed by DISTRIBUTION OF ASHES until 5:00 pm 6:30 pm - Evening Mass 8:00 pm – SPANISH MASS During Lent we are called to observe: ABSTINENCE from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. FASTING is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only ONE full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals IS NOT permitted. The Special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. This fasting and abstinence is not simply a form of penance, however; it is also a call for us to take stock of our spiritual lives. As Lent begins, we should set specific spiritual goals we would like to reach before Easter and decide how we will pursue them—for instance, by going to daily Mass when we can and receiving the Sacrament of Confession more often. Peace to all, Fr. Francisco Ortega February 18, 2015 ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICES 8:00 A.M. English Mass - Ashes will be Distributed at Dismissal 10:00 A.M. English Mass - Ashes will be Distributed at Dismissal 1:00 P.M. English Prayer Service - Ashes will be Distributed at Dismissal Ashes will be distributed after the 1:00pm Prayer Service until 5:00pm 6:30 P.M. English Mass - Ashes will be Distributed at Dismissal 8:00 P.M. Spanish Mass - Ashes will be Distributed at Dismissal Our Lenten Theme is: “HE DIED SO THAT WE MAY LIVE” LENTEN OBLIGATIONS FAST & ABSTINENCE:The code of Canon Law states that all Christ’s faithful are obliged by the Lord’s command, each in his or her own way to undertake that conversion of mind & heart called penance. In order that the faithful may join together in a common practice of penance, some days of penance are prescribed. On these days the faithful in a special way devote themselves to prayer, engage in works of piety & charity, & deny themselves by fulfilling their obligations more faithfully & especially by observing the fast & abstinence the Church prescribes. DAYS OF FAST & ABSTINENCE: Ash Wednesday & Good Friday. DAYS OF ABSTINENCE: ALL Fridays in Lent. ABSTINENCE: Means NOT eating meat, & binds Catholics 14 years of age & older. FAST: Means LIMITING oneself to one full meal & two lighter meals each day & binds Catholics from their 18th to 59th birthdays. One is not bound to fast if health or the ability to work is affected. PRAYER Please try to devote as much time to prayer & reflection as possible. Morning Mass is at 8:00AM every day! Stations of the Cross are prayed every Friday of Lent at 6:00PM in English & 7:00PM in Spanish. ALMSGIVING Please try to help the poor during Lent. There are a number of ways. Operation Rice Bowl, Alms for the Poor, bringing clothes for Catholic Charities on the last Sunday, & bringing food for our parish pantry on the second Sunday of the month are all ways we can help the less fortunate. SOUP & BREAD & STATIONS OF THE CROSS: We all will join for “Stations of the Cross” in the Church at 6:00pm in English & at 7:00pm in Spanish. We will be serving Soup & Bread on Fridays during Lent at 6:30pm in the Marian Hall. We may be able to skip a meal & experience hunger & thirst in the world. One way to observe Lent. OPERATION RICE BOWL KICK-OFF As Lent begins, we invite everyone to participate in Operation Rice-Bowl by taking home a Rice Bowl next weekend February 21st & 22nd. This project, run by Catholic Relief Services, provides a great opportunity for a meaningful Lenten observance. By following the daily suggestions in the rice Bowl calendar we observe the traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The Operation Rice Bowl program also gives us the chance to go further, by learning & helping as well. Through the Rice Bowl materials, we learn about the poor and underprivileged all around the world, and we have the chance to help make their lives better by praying for them, and giving what we save in the Rice Bowl to them. It’s a great way to observe Lent, and make the world a little better by helping the poorest of God’s children. Please take a Rice Bowl home and participate in this worthwhile project. The Rice Bowls will be available in both English and Spanish in boxes at the church entrances. We will have a second collection on the 4th Sunday of each month. This will be used for the upkeep of our aging buildings that need many repairs, and also for special projects and improvements that we will announce. The collection is much needed to help offset our church’s growing financial deficit and keep our parish financially strong. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good I have sinned against you, whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend with your help to do penance, to sin no more and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy. Amen.
