Dear Team Zachry (Zachry Parents, Students, Teachers, Staff, and Community),
Thank you all for a wonderful 2013-2014 school year.
This has been a year to celebrate the successes of our students, teachers, families and staff. We started the year with two
amazing open houses, one for 6th grade and one for 7th and 8th grade. This opportunity to visit with teachers and get
students' schedules had a huge turnout-actually
too big for our parking lot. So, for the 2014-2015 school year we will
have three Open House opportunities. On Tuesday, August 19th we will have our 8th grade Open House from 5-7 pm.
On Wednesday, August 20th we will have our 7th grade Open House from 5-7 pm. On Thursday, August 21st we will
have our 6th grade Open House from 5-7 pm.
Thank you to our PTA board and members for your support of our students. A great 8th grade dinner dance was given
to our 8th graders by our PTA, dances were held, a memorable Veterans Day Ceremony was supported and partnered
with our Electives Department, teachers and staff were honored and wish lists were granted. Benches were also purchased for our school. Thank you to everyone who participated in the PTA school-wide fundraiser to make these things
happen. Next year we will have Ms. Leticia Garza returning as our president with her existing board and some new members. Our PTA will be transformed into a Parent Student Teacher Association (PTSA) and we are looking forward to
our students partnership in supporting Team Zachry and our campus. One student will be elected next fall as a representative of the student body to the PTSA board. Nomination forms will be available once school begins.
Congratulations to our Team Zachry partnership with our Teachers, Staff, Families and Students on the academic successes. Our 6th made their goal on STAAR testing in Math and Reading, our 7th graders made their goal in \Vriting, and
our 8th graders made their goal in Math. Our accountability ratings look at not only passing scores but also individual
progress and closing the gaps between all groups of students. This year we will also be rated on student and community
engagement. Those ratings will come out in August 2015. We know that our students are growing with the increased
academic rigor as well as in their engagement in all aspects of their school environment. As Team Zachry our commitment to continued improvement and support for student success is our core purpose.
Our clubs and organizations participated in great student and community activities this school year. Our Zachry Community of Readers brought the community to our campus through book swaps, connected with students at our feeder
campus through book readings, donating books and activities. The group also donated books to local hospitals for children. Their hard work and dedication, led by sponsors Rebecca Medrano and Cynthia Carnes resulted in the $20,000
award by the Spurs Silver and Black Give Back Team Up grant. This will support a long legacy of literacy and support
for our students and community.
In other clubs students HipHop danced, built robots in Lego Robotics, explored technology, gardened, wrote our campus newspaper, worked with special needs students, gave service through our NJHS and Student Councils, and learned
about the world with Zachry World Travelers and created proposals for the International Space Station with Knowlton
5th graders in the Student Spaceflight Experiment Program.
BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) was a huge success as students and teachers/staff became engaged with each other
and the resources of the world. We also had students and teachers present at the first NISD Tech Expo and student film
festival with our students sharing a film short, robotics, and coding projects and our teachers sharing flipped classrooms
and other technology enhanced learning opportunities. Have a great summer (rest, have fun, be safe and learn!)

Zachry Community of Readers
The Zachry Community of Readers would like to thank every student, parent, community member, and faculty
member that helped to make our book club a success this year. In its first year of being launched, the book club
was named a Semi-Finalist in the Team-Up Challenge organized by Spurs Sports and Entertainment and was
awarded $2,500 to help put their
outreach plans to the community in action. Their goal was to spread the importance of literacy within the community. In April of 2014 they were named Team-Up Challenge Champions and were awarded an additional
$20,000!!!!!Next year promises to bring great things for the book club! The sponsors plan to host authors, book
signings, and integrate more technology to their activities as they continue do work among the community over
the next school year.
In addition to the fantastic Team-Up win, the club sponsors, Ms. Carnes and Ms. Medrano were named
"N.I.S.D. Outstanding Partners of the Year" for their work with the book club. This is a huge honor in the
Northside community.
If your child is interested in being part of the book club please have them see Ms. Carnes or Ms.
Medrano.
AVID
We would like to thank all of our AVID students and families that made it to our End of Year AVID Celebration on May 16th. We want to thank our AVID students for their continued hard work and dedication to
the AVID program as well as their parents for their continued support! - Ms. Logan and Ms. Wiliams

Dress Code -
2014-2015
Standardized dress code supports the development of our students' learning social skills and academic success by:
Helping to build a sense of community within the school and surrounding area
Provides less distractions during the school day
Supports affordable clothing choices
Standard attire must be worn daily by all Zachry students. Parents are expected to provide attire that complies with the school's and
district's dress code. The student's clothing must fit properly not exceeding one size beyond/below the correct size. A student will not
be permitted to attend class if his/her clothing is out of compliance with the standard attire policy. If a student arrives at school and is
not in compliance with the standard attire policy, he/she will be offered appropriate attire or his/her parent/guardian will be called to
bring clothing that conforms to this policy. Persistent noncompliance with the standard dress policy will be considered insubordination. If you have any questions regarding clothing, please contact a campus administrator.
Students are often awarded free dress days for various reasons such as meeting attendance goals and honor roll recipients. On
these days the students will adhere to the district and campus regulations for free dress. Final determination of acceptable dress and
grooming rests with the principal or her designee per Section 0 of NISD Student Handbook.

Wolverine Power and Speed Camp
The Wolverine Power and Speed Camp is designed specifically to meet the individualized needs of our students
and is similar to other programs, but offered at a fraction of the cost. Our program enables both athletes and
coaches to build strong positive relationships and establish a foundation for athletics. The first two hours of camp
will be dedicated to speed and power development and the last hour will be open gym. The Zachry Coaching staff
highly recommends this camp for any student-athlete considering extracurricular sports.
Camp begins June 9th through July 3rd from Sam till 11am. We invite all incoming 6thgrade male and female students. The total tuition for camp is $40 or a $10 weekly payment can be made throughout camp. Campers who pay
tuition in full on or before May 19, 2014, will receive a camp shirt at no cost; however camp
shirts will still be available at a cost of $5. Free breakfast and lunch may be provided, if educational programs are hosted at Zachry Middle School through NISD. More information about

Parents/Guardians-Please
remember that medicines need to be picked up from the clinic by a designated adult before June
20th. All medicines not picked up, will be discarded.
Please remember that 6th graders who will become 7th graders Fall 2014 must receive 3 additional immunizations and provide
documentation to the school before they can receive their schedule during prep days. We currently have over 200 students
who still need shots to start 7th grade. Immunizations required are 1) IDAP (tetanus booster must be within the last five
years, 2), Menactra (Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine and 3) Varicella (Chickenpox #2-second
dose required unless your
student had the chickenpox illness.
Thanks for allowing me the privilege of taking care of your Zachry students for the last 18 years. I am retiring from
Northisde ISD after 21 years of being a school nurse to try new challenges. My replacement will be Jesse Hinojosa,
RN, who most recently worked at Powell Elementary. She will be a terrific addition to Zachry Middle School so if you
have any questions she will be here for prep days and will be officially reporting to duty on Aug. 18 (one week before
students start Aug. 25).

Student
Spaceflight
Experiment
This year, Zachry 6th graders teamed
up with Knowlton 5th graders to work
on the Student Spaceflight Experiment
Program (SSEP). The students split
into three groups, and each group
wrote a 5 page research proposal to
submit to NASA. The winner will
have their group project sent to the
International Space Station and have
their experiment run in microgravity!
The projects that the students designed
were:
Honey and Microgravity-Does
micro gravity impact the nutritional
value of honey? Their research showed
that honey has many health benefits in
addition to being a natural sweetener.
Students were hopeful that answering
this question would provide a nutritional way to help flavor food for the
astronauts.
Antibiotics in MicrogravityStudents were initially interested in
how bacteria grows in space. When
10/45/ en/SignIn.ht
Program SSEP
they did their research, they discovered this had been explored and
scientists had found that it grew
much differently than on earth.
This prompted the students to ask
the question: How do antibiotics
work on bacterial growth in microgravity?
Cancer Cure and Microgravity Students discovered a plantCamptotheca-and
a bacteriaBacillus Coagulans- that were shown
to help reduce the growth of cancer
cells. Students put together a proposal to see if these two natural
cancer deterrents, in combination
with microgravity, would help cure
cancer.
Our students and sponsors, Ms.
Meredith Jones from Zachry and
Ms. Nancy Garcia from Knowlton
were celebrated at the NISD SSEP
awards. Our three student research
teams presented their proposals to
other NISD students, teachers,
families and community members. The research project proposal presented by the team from
Hobby MS and Howsman Elementary was selected to go to the
international space station this
fall. What a great opportunity for
our students to engage in this
exciting process!
