WI,,, Susan Allain, Principal Lisa Richard, Vice Principal Christopher Duke, Assistant Principal I[ A TITLE ONE CAMPUS June 6, 2014 Crystal Szcyubialka, Academic Dean Thomas Johnson, Administrator Dear Team Zachry (Zachry Parents, Students, Teachers, Staff, and Community), Thank you all for a wonderful 2013-2014 school year. This has been a year to celebrate the successes of our students, teachers, families and staff. We started the year with two amazing open houses, one for 6th grade and one for 7th and 8th grade. This opportunity to visit with teachers and get students' schedules had a huge turnout-actually too big for our parking lot. So, for the 2014-2015 school year we will have three Open House opportunities. On Tuesday, August 19th we will have our 8th grade Open House from 5-7 pm. On Wednesday, August 20th we will have our 7th grade Open House from 5-7 pm. On Thursday, August 21st we will have our 6th grade Open House from 5-7 pm. Thank you to our PTA board and members for your support of our students. A great 8th grade dinner dance was given to our 8th graders by our PTA, dances were held, a memorable Veterans Day Ceremony was supported and partnered with our Electives Department, teachers and staff were honored and wish lists were granted. Benches were also purchased for our school. Thank you to everyone who participated in the PTA school-wide fundraiser to make these things happen. Next year we will have Ms. Leticia Garza returning as our president with her existing board and some new members. Our PTA will be transformed into a Parent Student Teacher Association (PTSA) and we are looking forward to our students partnership in supporting Team Zachry and our campus. One student will be elected next fall as a representative of the student body to the PTSA board. Nomination forms will be available once school begins. Congratulations to our Team Zachry partnership with our Teachers, Staff, Families and Students on the academic successes. Our 6th made their goal on STAAR testing in Math and Reading, our 7th graders made their goal in \Vriting, and our 8th graders made their goal in Math. Our accountability ratings look at not only passing scores but also individual progress and closing the gaps between all groups of students. This year we will also be rated on student and community engagement. Those ratings will come out in August 2015. We know that our students are growing with the increased academic rigor as well as in their engagement in all aspects of their school environment. As Team Zachry our commitment to continued improvement and support for student success is our core purpose. Our clubs and organizations participated in great student and community activities this school year. Our Zachry Community of Readers brought the community to our campus through book swaps, connected with students at our feeder campus through book readings, donating books and activities. The group also donated books to local hospitals for children. Their hard work and dedication, led by sponsors Rebecca Medrano and Cynthia Carnes resulted in the $20,000 award by the Spurs Silver and Black Give Back Team Up grant. This will support a long legacy of literacy and support for our students and community. In other clubs students HipHop danced, built robots in Lego Robotics, explored technology, gardened, wrote our campus newspaper, worked with special needs students, gave service through our NJHS and Student Councils, and learned about the world with Zachry World Travelers and created proposals for the International Space Station with Knowlton 5th graders in the Student Spaceflight Experiment Program. BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) was a huge success as students and teachers/staff became engaged with each other and the resources of the world. We also had students and teachers present at the first NISD Tech Expo and student film festival with our students sharing a film short, robotics, and coding projects and our teachers sharing flipped classrooms and other technology enhanced learning opportunities. Have a great summer (rest, have fun, be safe and learn!) Susan M. Thanks for allowing me the privilege of taking care of your Zachry students for the last 18 years. I am retiring from Northisde ISD after 21 years of being a school nurse to try new challenges. My replacement will be Jesse Hinojosa, RN, who most recently worked at Powell Elementary. She will be a terrific addition to Zachry Middle School so if you have any questions she will be here for prep days and will be officially reporting to duty on Aug. 18 (one week before students start Aug. 25). The students split into three groups, and each group wrote a 5 page research proposal to submit to NASA. The winner will have their group project sent to the International Space Station and have their experiment run in microgravity! The projects that the students designed were: Honey and Microgravity-Does micro gravity impact the nutritional value of honey? Their research showed that honey has many health benefits in addition to being a natural sweetener. Students were hopeful that answering this question would provide a nutritional way to help flavor food for the astronauts. Antibiotics in MicrogravityStudents were initially interested in how bacteria grows in space. When 10/45/ en/SignIn.ht Program SSEP they did their research, they discovered this had been explored and scientists had found that it grew much differently than on earth. This prompted the students to ask the question: How do antibiotics work on bacterial growth in microgravity? Cancer Cure and Microgravity Students discovered a plantCamptotheca-and a bacteriaBacillus Coagulans- that were shown to help reduce the growth of cancer cells. Students put together a proposal to see if these two natural cancer deterrents, in combination with microgravity, would help cure cancer. Our students and sponsors, Ms. Meredith Jones from Zachry and Ms. Nancy Garcia from Knowlton were celebrated at the NISD SSEP awards. Our three student research teams presented their proposals to other NISD students, teachers, families and community members. The research project proposal presented by the team from Hobby MS and Howsman Elementary was selected to go to the international space station this fall. What a great opportunity for our students to engage in this exciting process!
