MMHS Counselor Belen Bahena was one finalist for
the Kiwanis Counselor of the Year!
Way to go Ms. Bahena
Mr. Dan Kriley has been teaching theatre at Mira Mesa High School for eleven
years. Prior to transferring to MMHS from Wilson Middle School, he taught
English, theatre and speech classes in Boston and Houston. He holds a bachelors
degree in Communication Arts from Grove City College and a masters degree in
Educational Leadership from California State, Northridge. In the spring of 2011
he completed coursework and earned a professional certificate in Arts Management from the University of Massachusetts - Amherst. In his free time he enjoys
theatre, foreign films, traveling, piano, volleyball and spending time with his
dogs.
Daniel Kriley truly is "The Best Local Drama Teacher"... if you don't believe me - just ask San
Diego County Credit Union or any one of his thousands of fans ;) Mr. Kriley is one of the great
assets of MMHS.
Mrs. Jeanne Christensen: As an educator for 23 years,
I believe in "Music" and all that it can do for a
student. The arts are essential to the academic
success of any student and it is my passion to help
students along through these four years of high school.
Within the Band and Color Guard, we have a
comprehensive program. Students can learn and
develop their instrumental skills, take AP Music Theory,
which will help their growth in music comprehension
and composition, have repeated opportunities for
performance, set high goals and standards, and have
the opportunity to become a student leader.
Accountability and teamwork are essential in each class
and the motto, "Never never never give up" is
something we live by.
A great picture from our band’s performance at Disneyland this past weekend. The band
accompanied Theatre on their annual trip to Disneyland.

Mira Mesa High students Taylor Kinoshita, Andres Jaramillo, Danielle De La Paz, Kenneth Tran,
and Samantha Preciado have been serving on the San Diego County District Attorney's Youth
Advisory Board (YAB) working on a campaign called "the Fight". The campaign premiered the
video they had been working on Wednesday night 5/28 at Lincoln High School and Thursday
night 5/29 at the Epicentre. The premiere was an event featuring creative outreach campaigns
created by students at Lincoln, MMHS, and Scripps.
The goal of the YAB is to empower students. The youth advisory board worked with the
District Attorney’s office to develop a campaign to empower students to make a difference and
a positive change. The video they had been working on premiered this past week and will
posted to their website soon. Here is the link to their website:

Personal Hygiene: Why it’s Important during Teenage Years
Now that we are getting closer to warm weather, it is important to keep hygiene a
priority. Before puberty, you don’t really need to think about hygiene and body odor.
After puberty though, the increased hormones cause your sweat glands become more
active, and chemicals are secreted into the sweat which causes a stronger smelling
odor. Puberty also causes the sebaceous glands in your skin to produce extra oil,
which causes both your skin and hair to become oily. This is why many teens have
issues with acne. It is all due to the hormone changes, which means your personal
hygiene habits need to change also.
Good hygiene needs to include the following:
 Showering daily is essential. Use a mild soap and shampoo your hair regularly. You
can determine the frequency of hair washing depending on the needs of your hair.
 Use deodorant or antiperspirant after showering. If you don’t feel comfortable with
this, then try sprinkling on powder.
 Wear fresh, clean clothes every day. Clothes absorb sweat and odor, and they need
to be washed after being worn.
 Gently wash your face daily with a mild soap to help with acne. You don’t want to
scrub too hard or pick at your pimples, because it can make the acne worse.
 Maintain good oral health. Brushing and flossing your teeth at least daily is im-
portant, especially if you are drinking coffee, sodas, or sports drinks. You are not
only at risk for tooth decay and disease, but also bad breath.
Poor hygiene is not just an odor issue, but can also lead to health complications. Infections and rashes are common complications of not taking care of yourself. So, keep
yourself healthy and your neighbors happy, and practice good hygiene.
