The University of the Middle East Project (www.ume.org) seeks a Japanese Program Coordinator
for a Cross Cultural Program in Hiroshima, Japan – August 3-9, 2016
The University of the Middle East Project (UME), an American non – profit organization that promotes
mutual understanding between cultures through education is seeking a program coordinator for a
program in Hiroshima, Japan. Between August 3-9, 2016, UME will implement the Oleander Program
that is designed to promote nuclear non-proliferation in the Middle East and North Africa region. This
program will include 12 high school teachers from the Middle East region traveling to Hiroshima, Japan
to learn about the dangers of nuclear weapons and to experience Japanese culture. This program has
been endorsed by Mayor Kazumi Matsui of Hiroshima.
UME is seeking an enthusiastic, hard-working individual with an interest in promoting peace and crosscultural relationships that will work with UME to introduce the best of Japanese culture to our Middle
Eastern participants.
The primary responsibilities of the program coordinator are:
Logistics: The Program Coordinator will be responsible for arranging meals, transportation and cultural
visits before the program. The Program Coordinator will accompany the participants throughout the
one week program to all meals, events and cultural activities.
Cross Cultural Liaison: The Program Coordinator will work closely with the UME Program Director to co-design program elements (cultural visits, meals that express Japanese culture, shopping etc.) that best
express Japanese traditions and culture and are compatible to people of the Middle East region. The
Program Coordinator is also expected to participate in all program events and act as an active and
enthusiastic resource about Japanese culture to the participants.
Program troubleshooting: The Program Coordinator will be expected to be on – call 24 hours a day
throughout the duration of the program to assist in possible emergencies.

Resident of Hiroshima or surrounding areas with familiarity with Hiroshima city
Fluency in Japanese
Limited Proficiency in English
An interest in the Middle East, cross cultural communications, and/or peace and international
programs.
Anticipated hours and Compensation: Approximately 40 hours of preparation work before the start of
the program throughout the months of June and July. Approximately 10 hours per day with participants
between August 3-9 (some flexibility in work hours is possible during these days). Total compensation in
the amount of $2,000. (Approximately 223,000 ¥)

教育を通して、文化間の相互理解を促進することを目的としたアメリカの NPO 団体である
The University of the Middle East Project は、広島でのプログラム実施に当たり、プログラムコー
ディネーターを募集しています。2016 年 8 月 3 日～9 日の間、UME は中東及び北アフリカ地域
での核不拡散を目的とし、Oleander Program を実施します。このプログラムには、中東地域の
高校教師 12 名が参加する予定となっており、核兵器の危険性について学ぶとともに、日本文化
を経験するため広島を訪問します。このプログラムは松井一實広島市長の後援を受けていま
す。
UME は、中東からの参加者に日本文化を紹介するため、平和と異文化交流に関心を持ち、
UME とともに働いてくださる方を募集しています。
