Dr. Robert W. Nienhuis began his ministry as Senior Pastor of Liberty Bible Church in
November of 2006. Prior to that time, he served in senior leadership positions at two Christian
universities: as Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer of Cornerstone University
in Grand Rapids, Michigan and as a Vice President of Taylor University in Indiana. He also
served as a faculty member and administrator at Michigan State University.
Dr. Nienhuis (pronounced Nēēnhīs) received his Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Hope
College in Holland, Michigan. His theological education was obtained at Trinity Evangelical
Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois, where he earned both a Master of Divinity degree and a
Master of Theology degree. He received his Ph.D. in Adult and Continuing Education from
Michigan State University.
While still a student at Hope College, Dr. Nienhuis began his ministry with the Greater Holland
Youth for Christ and continued with YFC in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Nienhuis has over twelve
years of church ministry experience, including eight years as the senior pastor of the Bethel
Baptist Church in Kalamazoo, Michigan. While in Kalamazoo, Dr. Nienhuis also served as
chaplain for the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.
In addition to his faculty work at Michigan State University, Dr. Nienhuis has served on the
faculties of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Grand Rapids Theological Seminary, and the
Moody Bible Institute Evening School Extension in Kalamazoo, Michigan. For twelve years,
Dr. Nienhuis regularly traveled to Southeast Asia to teach and train pastors and Christian leaders.
In more recent years, he has shifted his focus to the Middle East and North Africa where he has
been involved in training pastors and church planters. He has also served as an instructor for
training institutes in Peru and Portugal sponsored by Youth for Christ International.
Presently, Dr. Nienhuis serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of SpringHill Camps, a
regional camping ministry with overnight camps in Michigan and Indiana and day camps in
multiple states in the Midwest. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Regents of Trinity
International University.
Dr. Nienhuis is married to Bette Jo, a registered nurse who also holds a Masters degree in
counseling from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary. Bette Jo served as the Women’s Ministry
Mobilizer for the Great Lakes District of the Evangelical Free Church in America, as an adjunct
faculty member at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary, has her own speaking ministry to
women’s groups and retreats and frequently joins her husband in speaking at marriage and
parenting conferences and retreats. They have two married daughters and are the proud
grandparents of seven grandchildren. He enjoys reading (especially mysteries and biographies),
will likely never recover some of his lost golfing abilities, and never refuses Starbucks coffee or
Three Musketeers candy bars.
