"It's Homecoming:
Experience Cascade UMC Looking Back,
Pressing Forward"
October is here! That means Cascade
UMC is experiencing the blessings of
another Church Anniversary! We are
celebrating 88 years of service to the
church family and the Atlanta community.
What an amazing testimony of God’s
goodness, mercy and faithfulness to us.
On Sunday, October 12 at 10:00 a.m., we
will rejoice and sing praises together for
God’s continued presence and provisions.
Though we anticipate some challenges,
our usual three services will be combined
into one worship service. But, we have
prayed and planned and believe that the
experience of all of us being together, in
the spirit of a “good ole-fashioned
homecoming,” will far outweigh any
inconveniences. We are blessed to have
Reverend Dr. Joseph Lowery as our
preacher for the morning. We all know
that he is a legend among us and God has
used him for a long time to bless not just
Atlanta, but the world. The planning
committee has been intentional in their
selection
of worship participants;
therefore, we should see a diverse
representation of Cascade’s finest. Of
course, we know that the music will be
uplifting and inspirational, as it always is.
Immediately following the worship
service, we will enjoy food and fellowship
on the grounds, and all throughout the
building if necessary. I am excited and can
hardly wait!
I am sure some of you are asking
yourselves, “IS HE CRAZY?” And I would
answer that with a resounding “YES, I
AM!” I am crazy enough to believe that if
we all work together, we can make this
Cascade’s best anniversary yet. We are
going to need everyone’s
cooperation.
I am asking many of you to
seriously
consider
the
secured, off-site parking
that will be
available. I promise you will
not have to wait to be picked up and
brought to the church. We have scheduled
two additional buses and
additional
drivers to assure a constant presence to
and from the off-site parking to the church.
We plan to honor our senior members
(Torchbearers and all others) by providing
reserved seating for them. If you are in
that age range, and would like to be a part
of the processional, please be present and
ready to enter early. After the worship, we
will accommodate our seniors in Fellowship
Hall, to be served lunch while they
remember the past and reminisce about
“875 and 3144 Cascade Road” with each
other. Of course, there will be lots of
seating for the rest of us on the grounds
and in designated areas of the building,
where we will enjoy our food and
fellowship as well.
Psalm 92:1 reminds us, “It is a good thing to
give thanks unto the Lord.” This is a great
time to be a Kingdom builder at Cascade
United Methodist Church! Karen and I
continue to count it a blessing as well as a
privilege to be part of this awesome church
family. Let’s come together next Sunday
morning and glorify and thank God for all
He has done in and through us. Because of
His goodness, we will celebrate Cascade’s
story with former and current members in
worship and fellowship. We’re gonna have
a time!
In Service for Him,
Pastor Lawrence Young
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord,
plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future."
- Jeremiah 29:11
Welcome to the 88th Anniversary of Cascade
UMC! Anniversaries are a time for both celebration and
reflection. This year's theme, "It's Homecoming: Experience
Cascade UMC - Looking Back, Pressing Forward," is a
fitting one. The vision of our Senior Pastor, Rev. Lawrence
Young mirrors just that. Our anniversary is a time to
celebrate what God has done in the life of this
congregation and to anticipate with joy and confidence
what God will do.
Former location - 875 Cascade Road
This year, we will pause and honor two groups: our Torchbearers whose mission is to provide
opportunities for spiritual growth, nurturing, physical enrichment, and Christian fellowship for our
older adult members and the first families of Cascade UMC beginning with the first African-American
pastor, Rev. Walter L. Kimbrough who was appointed in 1974. Some of our first families are still
members of our congregation. All have received and accepted a personal invitation to worship with
us on Sunday, October 12, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Dr. Joseph E. Lowery will be the guest
speaker. Immediately following the service we will enjoy food and fellowship in the church parking
lot and in Fellowship Hall.
During this anniversary month, please remember the
enthusiasm and passion you felt when you became a
member or first attended worship at Cascade. Bring
that enthusiasm with you to Bible study, to worship
services,
to
your
places
of
employment,
and especially to the community. We are looking
forward to a glorious celebration in the Lord.
We can do all things in Christ who strengthens us.
Happy 88th Anniversary Cascade!

replacement therapy.
Factors that reduce the risk of
developing breast cancer include:
 Being older when you first had your
menstrual period.
 Starting menopause at an earlier age.
 Giving birth to more children, being
younger at the birth of your first child,
and breastfeeding your children.
 Getting regular exercise.
 Maintaining a healthy weight.
Some things that women can do to
decrease their personal risk of
developing breast cancer include:
 Maintain a healthy weight.
 Exercise regularly (at least four hours
a week).
 Get enough sleep.
 Don't drink alcohol, or limit alcoholic
drinks to no more than one per day.
 Avoid exposure to chemicals that can
cause cancer (carcinogens).
 Try to reduce your exposure to
radiation during medical tests like
mammograms, X-rays, CT scans, and
PET scans.
 If you are taking, or have been told to
take, hormone replacement therapy
or oral contraceptives (birth control
pills), ask your doctor about the risks
and find out if it is right for you.
 Make the Choice to Breastfeed
babies, if possible. Breastfeeding is
associated with reduced exposure to
estrogen associated with having
fewer regular menstrual cycles.
Women who breastfeed have fewer
menses and less estrogen exposure.
 Performing breast self examination
and having regular clinical breast
exams and screening mammograms
(as recommended by a provider).
Breast Cancer is the most frequently
diagnosed
cancer in
American Women second
only to skin cancer. Breast
Cancer can affect men
also, but most commonly
afflicts women. Each year,
more than 220,000 cases
are diagnosed and approximately 20%
of cases are associated with death.
Although statistically, more Caucasian
women are diagnosed with breast
cancer, more African-American women
experience mortality associated with
breast cancer. Some of the reasons for
this disparity are related to the
development of more aggressive breast
cancer types, later diagnosis of disease,
associated earlier age of diagnosis,
reduced access to screening tests and
healthcare, and educational barriers.
Most breast cancers are diagnosed in
women aged 50 or older, but 11% of
these cases are among women aged 45
or younger. Some of the risk factors
associated with developing breast
cancer include:
 Having a family history of close
relatives (parent, sibling or child) with
breast or ovarian cancer.
 BRCA1 & BRCA 2 gene changes (gene
associated with hereditary breast
cancer).
 Persons who are Ashkenazi Jews.
 Persons exposed to radiation therapy
to the breast or chest as a child or
young adult.
 Persons with a history of breast Adapted from 2014 cdc.gov website

 Women with dense breasts.
