Background & Aims
 Giving information: fundamental part of surgical
practice
 Giving clear information on proposed surgery at the
same time as breaking bad news can be challenging
 Facts may not be remembered but how news and
information is delivered can leave a lasting impression
 Aim- Do our Breast Cancer Patients fully understand
the implication of Surgical intervention?
 How well do we deliver the information?
 How can we improve our service?

 ‘Too rushed, unable to talk to the nurse long enough’

video would be easier to view than to read’
 ‘More information for relatives regarding what
happens on the day of surgery, where to wait and
timescale’
Summary of Findings
 Majority of our patients are satisfied: 4 did not feel they




were fully prepared for what happened at surgery despite
being happy with the information provided
BCN is the main source of information followed by
surgeons
Significant numbers get information from pre-clerking
nurse, internet and friends and family
Information pack is not a main source of information
An on-line video may be a further medium to explore
