20th January 2014 In our work across the youth justice system our primary goal is to reduce offending and a key part of the Youth Justice Board (YJB) role is to promote sharing of effective practice which has been shown to contribute to this goal. The YJB has commissioned the development of a programme of professional study, the ‘Youth Justice Effective Practice Certificate’ (YJEPC). This offers a programme of study which focuses on developing professionals’ skills and emphasising effective practice. The key features of this certificate are; It is available to professionals working in both the community and the secure estate and draws on the most up to date evidence of effective practice in youth justice; It is aligned to YJB effective practice framework It is a distance learning programme which draws on a range of digital resources and publications and which is integrated with the Youth Justice Interactive Learning Space; It is mapped to National Occupational Standards and the Youth Justice Learning and Skills Matrix It has four registrations points a year; and comprises a 34 week programme of learning. The YJEPC involves up to 300 hours guided learning hours and assessment requirements. There are elements of observed practice available within the programme, and line managers/supervisors are provided with guidance on how practitioners can be supported in linking learning to their day to day work. The YJB endorses the YJEPC as a high quality course and it is accredited with Skills for Justice Awards. In 2014, a series of ‘mini-awards’ will be launched. These are short courses for youth justice practitioners that focus on important aspects of youth justice work. These distance learning courses will provide an accessible range of professional development to supplement the longer YJEPC programme.
