Welcome and Introductions Paul Stock thanked everyone for attending and Lesley Olden welcomed colleagues to Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School. Introductions were made. 2. Presentation by Host School Mary Davis gave a brief overview of the context of Bryn Hafren described the school’s approach to 14-19 curriculum planning and delivery. Mary described how vocational qualifications were meeting the needs of the students and that the school had a strategic plan for delivering the new WBQ requirements embedding the WBQ ‘challenges’, individual investigation and skills across KS4 and KS5 subjects. The group were then able to watch a performance by Bryn Hafren’s dance group, and visited the school’s new health and beauty salon where Anna Elias gave a detailed presentation on the success of the qualifications offered on-site. A Q & A session followed and colleagues discussed approaches to vocational subjects and WBQ provision given the uncertainty surrounding the requirements of that in the new model. Paul Stock thanked Bryn Hafren colleagues for their excellent and thoughtprovoking presentation. 3. Minutes of last meeting: All agreed that these were a true record of the previous meeting. Paula reported that two appointments had been made to the iNet Wales Team and expressed delight in welcoming Paul Stock and David Wylde to the team since she would be moving on to a Deputy Headteacher post after Easter. Paul Stock to start to collate a directory of contacts for iNet members, from presentations seen at Steering Group meetings. 4. 1. Update on iNet Wales iNet Wales 5th National Conference – Liberating Learning October 18th , 2013 Paula reported that feedback from the conference had been very positive, with overall an evaluation score of 1.5 being achieved. Guy Claxton’s keynote had been very well received, and the workshop led by John Cannon at Ysgol Bryn Heddydd in Rhyl had received 1s across the board. All workshops had been successful in moving delegates’ thinking on in approaches to liberate learning for staff and students. iNet Wales Student Impact Competition 2013 To recognise the vital role that students play in school-wide change and transformation and to coincide with the iNet Wales 5th National Conference Paula explained that the first iNet Wales Student Impact competition had been really successful. Student representatives from the winning schools (Barry Island and Cadoxton) were invited to present their work and collect their award at the iNet Wales 5th National Conference. All schools entering the competition were sent highly commended certificates also. iNet Wales 6th National Conference planning Themes and possible speakers for the Oct 2014 conference were discussed, and it was agreed there should be a focus on curriculum change, qualifications and skills. Tim Oates was suggested as a possible keynote following his presentation ‘England has a new National Curriculum – does that mean England has one, or twenty thousand, new School Curricula?’ at the SSAT conference in December where he explored the freedoms schools have to shape their own school curriculum. Another suggestion was Prof David Reynolds. Colleagues also suggested that workshops from schools in England would be valuable given that the phasing out of NC levelling has already begun there. Paula mentioned that the iNet Wales Primary Network also want KS2/3 transition to be a theme of the conference and all agreed it would be a good idea to encourage cross-phase working/sharing. GLP-Wales programme Paula raised awareness of the DiFD funded Global Learning Programme in Wales and explained that Stanwell were a pilot school, and that the next phase of recruiting schools to the programme would start soon. Each ‘Lead’ school is able to gain Lead Practitioner Accreditation for two members of staff working on the programme. In-school Lead Practitioners programme A discussion took place around the inet Wales In-school LP programme and Paula reported that Connah’s Quay HS had recently been successful in gaining iNet LP Learning Centre status having supported a cohort of colleagues through the accreditation. The school is now able to deliver LP accreditation training to other local schools and is starting a primary secondary link project around this. Other schools in Wales are now showing an interest in doing the same. Paul Thomas suggested that the timing may now be right to approach the SE Consortia about this provision. 5. Aspiring Senior Leader – Programme experiences and Innovation project presentation Lucy Bunce from Y Pant Comprehensive gave a valuable overview of the iNet Wales Aspiring Senior Leaders programme which is now recruiting for Cohort 4 starting in May. Lucy described her experiences as a participant on the programme and outlined the tangible benefits of both the school visits and the assignments to her individually and to her school. Lucy reported that she is currently working to tackle disadvantage in Y Pant by emplying a number of startegies including providing aspirational work placements for FSM students. She suggested that access to online journals for participants in the programme would be extremely helpful. Feedback from the Student Voice Steering Group Meeting The iNet South Wales Steering Group members joined the Student Voice Paul Stock to follow-up with the appropriate Consortia colleagues once their responsibilities have been clarified. Paula to liaise with SSAT colleagues about the possibility of access to University library membership through their link with Nottingham. meeting to hear about the progress the students had made during their meeting. Another excellent presentation was given by group members, and Rob Downs congratulated the group on their ideas for what makes for effective teaching and learning from a student perspective. The group will continue their research in their own schools and continue to develop a video for the end of the summer term. 6. Date and time of next meeting The next iNet South Wales Headteachers and Student Voice Steering Group meetings will be held on 12th June at 10am in either Y Pant or Newport High School.
