Presentation by Host School
Mary Davis gave a brief overview of the context of Bryn Hafren described
the school’s approach to 14-19 curriculum planning and delivery. Mary
described how vocational qualifications were meeting the needs of the
students and that the school had a strategic plan for delivering the new
WBQ requirements embedding the WBQ ‘challenges’, individual
investigation and skills across KS4 and KS5 subjects. The group were then
able to watch a performance by Bryn Hafren’s dance group, and visited the
school’s new health and beauty salon where Anna Elias gave a detailed
presentation on the success of the qualifications offered on-site.
A Q & A session followed and colleagues discussed approaches to
vocational subjects and WBQ provision given the uncertainty surrounding
the requirements of that in the new model.
Paul Stock thanked Bryn Hafren colleagues for their excellent and thoughtprovoking presentation.

Update on iNet Wales
iNet Wales 5th National Conference – Liberating Learning October 18th ,
2013
Paula reported that feedback from the conference had been very positive,
with overall an evaluation score of 1.5 being achieved. Guy Claxton’s
keynote had been very well received, and the workshop led by John
Cannon at Ysgol Bryn Heddydd in Rhyl had received 1s across the board.
All workshops had been successful in moving delegates’ thinking on in
approaches to liberate learning for staff and students.
iNet Wales Student Impact Competition 2013
To recognise the vital role that students play in school-wide change and
transformation and to coincide with the iNet Wales 5th National Conference
Paula explained that the first iNet Wales Student Impact competition had
been really successful. Student representatives from the winning schools
(Barry Island and Cadoxton) were invited to present their work and collect
their award at the iNet Wales 5th National Conference. All schools entering
the competition were sent highly commended certificates also.
iNet Wales 6th National Conference planning
Themes and possible speakers for the Oct 2014 conference were
discussed, and it was agreed there should be a focus on curriculum change,
qualifications and skills. Tim Oates was suggested as a possible keynote
following his presentation ‘England has a new National Curriculum – does
that mean England has one, or twenty thousand, new School Curricula?’ at
the SSAT conference in December where he explored the freedoms schools
have to shape their own school curriculum. Another suggestion was Prof
David Reynolds. Colleagues also suggested that workshops from schools
in England would be valuable given that the phasing out of NC levelling has
already begun there. Paula mentioned that the iNet Wales Primary Network
also want KS2/3 transition to be a theme of the conference and all agreed it
would be a good idea to encourage cross-phase working/sharing.
GLP-Wales programme
Paula raised awareness of the DiFD funded Global Learning Programme in
Wales and explained that Stanwell were a pilot school, and that the next
phase of recruiting schools to the programme would start soon. Each ‘Lead’
school is able to gain Lead Practitioner Accreditation for two members of
staff working on the programme.
In-school Lead Practitioners programme
A discussion took place around the inet Wales In-school LP programme and
Paula reported that Connah’s Quay HS had recently been successful in
gaining iNet LP Learning Centre status having supported a cohort of
colleagues through the accreditation. The school is now able to deliver LP
accreditation training to other local schools and is starting a primary secondary link project around this. Other schools in Wales are now showing
an interest in doing the same. Paul Thomas suggested that the timing may
now be right to approach the SE Consortia about this provision.
5.
Aspiring Senior Leader – Programme experiences and Innovation
project presentation
Lucy Bunce from Y Pant Comprehensive gave a valuable overview of the
iNet Wales Aspiring Senior Leaders programme which is now recruiting for
Cohort 4 starting in May. Lucy described her experiences as a participant on
the programme and outlined the tangible benefits of both the school visits
and the assignments to her individually and to her school. Lucy reported
that she is currently working to tackle disadvantage in Y Pant by emplying a
number of startegies including providing aspirational work placements for
FSM students. She suggested that access to online journals for participants
in the programme would be extremely helpful.
Feedback from the Student Voice Steering Group Meeting
The iNet South Wales Steering Group members joined the Student Voice
Paul Stock to follow-up with the
appropriate Consortia

responsibilities have been
clarified.

meeting to hear about the progress the students had made during their
meeting. Another excellent presentation was given by group members, and
Rob Downs congratulated the group on their ideas for what makes for
effective teaching and learning from a student perspective. The group will
continue their research in their own schools and continue to develop a video
for the end of the summer term.
