Invitation to Seminar Talk How (much) do flowers vary? –Unbalanced disparity among flower functional modules and a mosaic pattern of morphospace occupation. Marion Chartier University of Vienna Host: Nick Barton The staggering diversity of angiosperms and in particular of their flowers has fascinated scientists for centuries. Yet, what has rarely been addressed are the quantitative distribution of floral morphological diversity (floral disparity) among angiosperm lineages and the contribution of the different functional organs of a flower to total floral disparity. Here, we do so by analysing a morphological dataset including extant and fossil representatives of the large order Ericales. We show that Ericales twenty families occupy different portions of the floral morphospace in a mosaic pattern. Furthermore, we show that male organs contribute more to disparity than other floral organs. Our study demonstrates the power of quantitative analyses to gain new insights into floral evolution and diversity.
