He is the President of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedicines, in Germany. The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut is an Agency of the German Federal Ministry of Health. Its research and control activities promote the quality, safety and efficacy of biological medicinal products. After he obtained his Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1984, Klaus Cichutek was granted a fellowship by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, German Research Foundation), followed by a fellowship from the University of California in Berkeley, U.S.A., where he worked as a postdoctoral scientist from 1985 to 1988. Since 1988 Professor Cichutek has been working at the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut as a scientist. From 1988 to 1994 he was the head of the 'Molecular Biology' Research Group followed by his nomination as head of the Medical Biotechnology Division in 1994 which he directed until 2011. In 1999 Prof. Cichutek took over as Deputy Director of the Paul-EhrlichInstitut and from 31st October 2001 until 30 November 2009 he was the Vice-President of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut. His research interests focused initially on oncogenic retroviruses, then human and simian immunodeficiency viruses as well as measles virus as a vaccine vector and an oncolytic virus. In gene therapy, he generated a variety of retro- and lentiviral pseudotypes and demonstrated the possibility of cell targeting in vitro and in vivo. Professor Cichutek serves as committee member to several scientific associations, such as the Society of Virology and the German Society for Gene Therapy (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Gentherapie). He is also member of the Executive Committee of the Consortium of German Federal Research Establishments (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Ressortforschungseinrichtungen), the scientific council of the Max-Planck Institute for Brain Research (Max-Planck-Institut für Hirnforschung), several boards of the Loewe Centre for Cell and Gene Therapy (Loewe-Zentrum für Zell und Gentherapie) at Frankfurt/Main and founding member of the German Center for Infection Research. Furthermore, he is a member in a number of editorial boards of scientific journals including the Journal of Gene Medicine. Prof. Cichutek also acts as reviewer of research proposals for the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF), the Alliance of Science Organisations in Germany (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG), and the European Commission. Since March 2014, Professor Cichutek has been chair of the European "Heads of Medicines Agencies" (HMA) Management Group which he joined in February 2014.
