10. Bundeskongress Nationale Stadtentwicklungspolitik “Städtische Energien – Zusammenhalt gestalten” 14. bis 16. September 2016 in Hannover Cities Fit for Climate Change Internationale Klimaschutzinitiative Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Mittwoch, 14. September 2016, 16:00 –17:30 Uhr Climate-Proof Urban Development – Paving the Way towards Resilient and Low-Carbon Cities and National Policies Cities are responsible for a resilient and low-carbon urban development. They significantly contribute to climate change and are considerably vulnerable to its adverse effects. While cities account for merely 3 per cent of the Earth’s land, they account for 60-80 per cent of global energy consumption and 75 per cent of carbon emissions. Beyond that, cities are confronted with a higher frequency of extreme weather events, droughts, water shortages, as well as heightened heat island effects, and coastal cities in particular are threatened by rising sea levels and storm surges. This side event will offer a platform for cities as well as urban and climate practitioners to interact with and learn from each other. The event will benefit from experience on the ground from the project “Cities Fit for Climate Change” (CFCC), which is active in cities in Chile, India and South Africa, that will provide valuable input for the debate around climate-friendly urban development. CFCC is a project of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) and is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) and supported by its division “Fundamental Aspects of Urban Development Policy”. The event will be structured as an interactive dialogue and panel discussion to explore opportunities and lessons learnt with regard to integrating climate change mitigation and adaptation into urban development strategies and policies. Prospective speakers/panellists: - Representative Santiago, Chile Representative Chennai, India Representative Durban, South Africa BMUB speaker GIZ speaker
