The Amerika Haus e.V. NRW, in cooperation with the Center for International Security and Governance (CISG), cordially invites you to a Lecture and Discussion “The Role of the US Army in Europe in the 21st Century - Quo vadis?” with Brig. Gen. Markus Laubenthal, Chief of Staff U.S. Army in Europe Thursday, October 29, 2015 | 7:00 pm CISG | Heussallee 18-24 | 53113 Bonn The United States and many European states can look back on over 200 years of friendly relations between their armies. In the 18th century, for instance, many European soldiers served in the American Revolutionary War. In the 20th century, American ground forces were essential for Europe’s defense during both world wars and especially during the Cold War. The modern warfare and defense strategies of the 21st century pose new challenges for the U.S. Army in Europe and the allied forces of the NATO alliance. How do the U.S. Army and NATO want to respond to these challenges? What role does the U.S. Army and NATO play in Europe in the 21st century? And “quo vadis”- what will the future hold for the U.S. Army in Europe? The Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army in Europe, Brigadier General Markus Laubenthal, will analyze these questions in a keynote speech, moderated discussion, and Q&A with the audience. Brigadier General Markus Laubenthal became the first multinational Chief of Staff at U.S. Army in Europe (USAREUR) in 2014, which makes him the first German general who assumed this role. In 1982 Brig. Gen. Markus Laubenthal joined the Bundeswehr. From 1983 until 1985, he successfully completed his Reserve Officer Training at the Army Officer School in Hannover and his Officer Training at the Armor School in Munster. After that, he finished the General Staff Officer Course at the Federal Command and Staff College in Hamburg and earned a Master of Arts degree in Defense Studies from King’s College in London. Prior to his assignment as chief of staff of the US army in Europe, Brig. Gen. Laubenthal served in many other positions, including as the Commander of 12th Panzer Brigade in Amberg and as head of division in the department of politics in the German Ministry of Defense The event will be moderated by Ralph Sina, studio director of the WDR Hörfunkstudio in Brussels. Free Admission. The event will be held in German. After the event, you are invited to a get-together. Registration: Amerika Haus e.V.
