GRAMMAR REVIEW:
Topic: Subject and Verb Agreement Rules Part 2 (5-6 minutes)
(主語と動詞のルール 2)
Subjects and Verbs must always agree. In asking questions, it is very important to identify the
subject to avoid confusion on which verb to use. There is a special rule for singular and plural
subjects that are connected by “and.” There is also another rule if you use determiners (each,
every, and no). For instance:
(主語と動詞は、常に呼応しています。質問文では、どの動詞を使用するのか判断する
ために、主語を特定することが非常に重要です。ここでは、単数・複数の主語で、
“and”によってつながれた主語のルールと、“each, every, no”などの「限定詞」を使う
ときのルールを勉強しましょう。)
1. In questions, the subject does not always come before the action. Identify what or who
the subject is to know which verb to use.
(質問文では、主語がいつも行動の前にくるわけではありません。正しい動詞を
使うために、主語が何か、誰かを特定しましょう。)
Example (例):
What are the requirements that the applicants should submit?
(応募者が提出する必要があるものは何ですか?)
2. Plural verbs are used when two subjects are connected by the conjunction “and.”
(2つの主語が 接続詞“and”でつながっている場合、動詞は複数形で受けます。
)
Example (例):
Their application form and resume are essential if they will go to the job fair.
(もし就職フェアに行くなら、応募書類と履歴書を持っていく必要があります。)

3. Singular verbs are used when two subjects connected by “and” refer to the same object
in the sentence.
(2つの主語が接続詞“and”でつながっていても、同じ対象を指している場合は
動詞は単数形で受けます。)
Example (例):
Coat and tie is the attire required for men who are getting the interview.
(男性が面接を受ける際には、上着とネクタイを着用する必要があります。)
4. Singular verbs are also used when the words “each,” “every,” or “no” come before the
subject.
(“each” “every” “no”が主語の前にくるときには、動詞は単数形で受けます。
)
Example (例):
Every man and woman is welcome to join the company’s campaign program.
(全ての男女の方は、企業のキャンペーン・プログラムにぜひ参加してください。)
Remember: When two subjects are joined together by the conjunction “and,” they should take
the plural form of the verb as a general rule. The singular verb should apply to two subjects
connected by “and” only when they are considered as one unit.
(ポイント:2つの主語が、接続詞“and”でつながれているときは、動詞は原則として
複数形で受けるが、つながれた2つの主語が一式とみなされる場合は、動詞は単数形で
受けます。)
Comprehension Check:
Create a sentence with two subjects connected by “and” that act as one.
