TOEIC
Tips
I. Phrasal Verbs – Some verbs in English consist of more than one word. These are called Phrasal Verbs. Phrasal Verbs
are verbs that always go together with one or more particles and have a special meaning different than the verb does
when it is alone. Some Phrasal Verbs you may already know are: 句動詞−動詞には、1 語以上で形成される「句動
詞」というものがあります。これらは、常に1つあるいはそれ以上の分詞とともに用いられる動詞形であり、
その動詞が単独で使われる時の意味とはまた別の意味を持ちます。例えば以下のような句動詞はすでにみな
さんも知っているでしょう。
1. I always get up before 6a.m. 「私はいつも午前 6 時前に起きます。」
2. I always take off my shoes before I enter my house.「私は、いつも家に入る前に靴を脱ぎます。」
II. Types of Phrasal Verbs – There are two types of phrasal verbs. 句動詞は 2 種類があります。
A. Separable Phrasal Verbs – Some Phrasal Verbs can be separated by an object phrase. If the object phrase is a
pronoun, the pronoun must go between the verb and its particle. Here are some Separable Phrasal Verbs: 切り離す
ことのできる句動詞について−いくつかの句動詞は、目的語によって切り離すことができます。もしその
目的語が代名詞であれば、その代名詞は、動詞と分詞の間に置かなければなりません。以下がその例です。
• figure out …を理解する
• hand in 提出する、手渡す
• hand out 配布する、分け与える
• look up (辞書などで)調べる • pick up 拾う、誰かを迎える • throw away 捨てる • write down 書き留める
Examples: 1. You should look up the words that you don’t know in a dictionary. OR
You should look the words that you don’t know up in a dictionary.
「知らない単語は辞書で調べた方がいいでしょう。」
2. If you don’t know the answer, you must try to figure it out.
「もし答えが分からなければ、それを判断しなければならない。」
B. Non-separable Phrasal Verbs – Some Phrasal Verbs can not be separated, so you will always see the particle right
after its verb. Here are some Non-separable Phrasal Verbs:切り離さない句動詞について−いくつかの句動詞
は、切り離さず、動詞のすぐ後に分詞を置きます。以下がその例です。
• get along with …と上手くやる • get over (病気など)から回復する • keep on …し続ける • run into 偶然出会う
• get on(バスなどから)に乗る • get off (バスなどから)降りる • grow up 成長する
Examples: 1. You must buy a ticket before you get on the train.「電車に乗る前に切符を買わなければなりません。」
2. Do you get along with your brothers and sisters?「あなたは兄弟、姉妹を仲がいいですか。」
III. Reading Tips for the TOEIC
When doing the Reading sections of the TOEIC test, be careful about Phrasal Verbs. Separable Phrasal Verbs can be especially
difficult if the particle is separated from its verb. Remember that verbs with particles have a different meaning than the same
verb without the particle. Therefore be sure to read the whole sentence before trying to understand its meaning. There may be a
particle near the end that will affect the meaning of the verb in the sentence. Compare these two sentences:

a). The teacher got angry and threw the homework paper.
「その先生は、怒って宿題の紙を投げた。」
b). The teacher got angry and threw the homework paper away. 「その先生は、怒って宿題の紙を捨てた。」
Because the verb in b). is a Phrasal Verb, we can understand that the homework paper is now in the garbage can. However, a).
means that the homework paper is not in the garbage can but may be somewhere thrown on the floor.
b)は、句動詞 throw away であるため,その宿題の紙がゴミ箱に捨てられてしまっていることが分かります。しかし、
a)は、away がないことから,宿題はごみ箱の中にはなく,おそらくどこか床などに落ちているだろうと理解できるわけです。

Questions 17-20 refer to the following article.
Japanese seniors’ fitness boom
by Sachiko Harada, staff reporter
Genki gym, located amongst the high-rise buildings of Tokyo’s Roppongi
district, is busy this Tuesday morning, but I don’t see the usual muscular
young men found in most fitness clubs. Customers using the equipment are
grey-haired grandmothers and grandfathers. Jiro Yamada, 74, started
working out three years ago and ran the Tokyo marathon this year. Genki’s
manager, Ken Ishii, described how he offered discounts to seniors after
noticing the club was underused on weekdays. “We developed a plan to
increase members by charging those over 65 30% less than regular members.
We needed to increase profits to repair and upgrade our facilities” he
explained. “The low birth rate means the percentage of young people is
decreasing while seniors are forecast to grow to 25% of the population soon.”
Hiroko Kato, 72, joined the gym last year with the purpose of losing weight.
She’s been coming four times a week. She appreciates the atmosphere as
well as the reasonable cost and results have been impressive. “I’ve lost five
kilos” she said with a smile “and I feel great.”
