EQUIPMENT < Required 必須 > Because the primary goal of this course is to improve your English listening skills through the study of pronunciation, you need at least a computer, and, if available, one listening device, a tape recorder, an MD player, a CD player, an i-Pod, etc. Then, you can listen to the course material at home as many times as you can. And also, when you are asked to record your speech sounds as part of your assignment, you need to use a computer because the sound files that you will submit should be wave-formatted (.wav). And to keep your sound files, it is convenient to use a 1 USB stick memory (1GB or more), which may be purchased at computer stores in town or at the University Coop. So if you do not have a computer, use the classroom 3303 or 3305 during the self-study hours on weekdays. For more details, check out the web site of Foreign Language Education & Research Division, Global Communication Center (国際交流センター 外国語教育研究 室). ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION Your participation is essential to the success of the course. Therefore, you are expected to attend class regularly and to be on time. Late arrival to class will not be tolerated. Each absence between the second week and the last week of regular classes (except for kibiki with official documentation) will cause you to lose 2 points of your final score. Your attendance may be checked by submitting your homework assignment. Thus, if you attend a class, but do not submit homework, you may need to report on your attendance to the instructor when the class starts. To pass this course you cannot miss more than 4 regular classes between the second week and the last week of the course (Final exam not included). Remember that your attendance will not be counted if you do not participate in the class. In the event that you miss class, nonetheless, you are fully responsible for getting any missed material and information. HOMEWORK & PAPER FORMAT You will undertake homework assignments, spoken (wave file-recorded) and/or written, in almost every class during the course of the semester. Incomplete assignments will cause loss of points. One-week-late submission of your homework assignment will be accepted, but with loss of half a point (1.5%). Any past homework older than one week will NOT be accepted. ALL homework assignments MUST be submitted on A4-sized paper. Other sizes of paper are NOT accepted. For more details about the paper format, see『クラス提出物の書式について』. QUIZZES & EXAMS You will be required to take at least two perception quizzes for discrimination of English segmental sounds. The final exam will contain a dictation test and some other tests from the textbooks A & B. GRADING The scores you receive on your individual activity will contribute to your final grade in the following proportions: Class attendance and participation - 26% (2 × 13)* Homework assignment - 33% (3 × 11) Original wordbook - 10% Quiz - 10% (5 × 2) Final exam - 21% Total - 100% *The first class and the final exam are not counted for attendance.
