COURSE GOALS
The main focus of the course is developing students’ reading and listening skills. It also
offers them learning materials using the multimedia language laboratory system, such as ALC
NetAcademy and some others for practice in pronunciation (shadowing, overlapping, etc.).
Students are expected to attend class meetings as scheduled, participate in classroom activities, and
complete assignments on time.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
First, students are going to learn how to pronounce English vowels and consonants using
sound data on the web and mimicking model pronunciation in class. Second, they mimic real
spoken English and memorize how to say in the real world by means of video material, which was
created for first-time travelers abroad. The skits of the material are the ones travelers tend to
encounter in foreign countries. Thus, students are required to speak real English just as they are in
the real situation of the skits. And third, they will learn what parts they need to alter and how.
Aspects of sound change, stress accent locus, intonation, bodily behavior, eye-contact, facial
expressions, etc. may be what they need to learn. The final exam is a fluency/memorization test.
For more detail, see “QUIZZES & EXAMS” below. One class meeting is devoted for 1-2 chapters
of the textbook.

ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION
Your participation is essential to the success of the course. Therefore, you are expected to
attend class regularly and to be on time. Late arrival to class will not be tolerated. Each absence
between the second week and the last week of regular classes (except for kibiki with official
documentation) will cause you to lose 3 points of your final score. To pass this course you cannot
miss more than 4 regular classes between the second week and the last week of the course
(Final exam not included). Remember that your attendance will not be counted if you do not
participate in the class. In the event that you miss class, nonetheless, you are fully responsible for
getting any missed material and information.
HOMEWORK & PAPER FORMAT
You will undertake homework assignments during the course of the semester, which are the
following three types:
1) Regular homework
The homework deadline is at the beginning of next class. One-week-late submission of
your homework will be accepted, but with loss of 1.5 points. Any past homework older
than one week will NOT be accepted. All regular homework MUST be submitted on A4sized paper. Other sizes of paper are NOT accepted.
For more details about the paper format, see『クラス提出物の書式について』.
2) Original “wordbook”
To enhance your English vocabulary power you are required to make your original
wordbook, in which any English word can be listed. However, in your wordbook, you
CANNOT include anything other than words, idioms, stress accent marks, phonetic
symbols, and meanings. Otherwise, you can get 0 point. See『記憶と会話のための単語帳
の作り方』.
3) ALC NetAcademy on the Web
Answering English listening/reading/grammar questions on the Web using a computer.
Completion deadline will be strictly specified. Late completion is NOT counted for your
final score.
Note that incomplete assignments will cause loss of points.
QUIZZES & EXAMS
There are two perception quizzes for discrimination of English segmental sounds. And, you
will be required to take a final performance exam where you need to perform “Haruko,” while
watching a skit of the textbook DVD. Your serious participation in class will help you succeed in
the exam. So, don’t skip the class!
