出版社名の Melmoth は、1894 年「サロメ」英語版初版の英訳を行ったダグラスと一緒に翌年からフ
ランスとイタリアを転々とした、ワイルドが使った仮名であり、この「サロメ」海賊版初版を制作
した出版社 Leonard Smithers の偽名です。同社は、ロンドン南西にあった書店 Wright & Jones を通じ
て販売しました。正規の出版社 John Lane よりビアズリーの図版のコピーライトで訴えられ、当版は
差し押さえられ、出版禁止となりました。その後 1907 年に出版される正規の英版第 2 版の図版と同
じですが、最初の 3 枚の図版が、タイトルページ、図版リスト、カバーデザインと異なった順番に
なっており、タイトルページには 1904 とありますが、オリジナルの薄青のクロスの背には 1905 と
金箔文字が刻印されています。制作数自体が初版の半数に満たず、稀少なコレクター用エディショ

Robert Cruikshank (68), Thomas Rowlandson (2), and G.M. Brightly (1), and 74 woodcut text illustrations and
one woodcut plate.
First issue with the woodcut The Five Principal Orders of Society (volume 1, facing page 3); Plate 28 (facing
page 389 in volume one) misdated "1284" and page 222 in volume two is blank.
With a chemised ALS from Robert Cruickshank to Charles Molly Westmacott and advertisement leaf touting
The English Spy on the recto and Egan's Life in London on the verso.
Publisher's original pictorial boards, expertly rebacked. Full title and large "Temple of Life" woodcut to upper
board: advertisement for New London Theatre with two small woodcuts to lower board. Untrimmed. Partially
uncut. The copy of Mortimer L. Schiff with his leather bookplate. Expected rubbing and soiling lighter than
anticipated. Individually chemised and housed within a blue cloth slipcase.
ロバート・クルックシャンク (1789-1856)、ローランドソン (1756-1827) の挿絵を多数収めた風刺小説
です。現存数が少ない出版時の厚紙装丁を残している他、クルックシャンクから小説の著者ブラッ
クマントル（本名ウェストマコッ
ト）にあてて書かれた、本書の製
作についての直筆の私信が付され
ている極めて貴重なコピーです。
クロス製の化粧箱に収められてい
ます。
著者ウェストマコット (1788-1868)
はイギリスの著作家であり、1830
年代に人気を博した日曜新聞 The
Age 紙の編集者でもありました。
上流階級や有名人のゴシップ記事
を専門にし、記事を差し止める代
わりに金銭を受け取る（当時は合
法）という悪名高い記者であった
と言われています。
アメリカの銀行家で、アメリ
カボーイスカウト協会の初期
の会長を務めた Mortimer Loeb
Schiff(1877-1931) の蔵書票が貼ら

アメリカの画家バスキン (1922-2000) による 10 点の線描画の複製と、それらに霊感を受けて英国の詩人
ヒューズ (1930-98 ；桂冠詩人 1984-98）が創作した 10 篇の詩集「洞窟の鳥」を合わせた 100 部限定の詩画
集です。ヒューズの詩は手漉き紙に印刷され、推敲の跡を残す手書き原稿の複製が文と向かい合うように
貼りこまれています。バスキンの画は厚口の全紙に一枚ずつ刷られ、詩とともに大型の専用ケースに収め
られています。これらの作品はイルクリー文芸祭でパフォーマンスのために企画されたもので、10 篇の詩
はいずれもこれが初出です。1978 年にこれを大幅に加筆・改訂した詩集「洞窟の鳥：ある錬金術的な洞窟劇」
(Cave Birds: An Alchemical Cave Drama. London: Faber & Faber, 1978) が刊行されました。(11225)

パリッシュ（1870-1966）は、19 世紀末から 20 世紀中旬にかけて、主にアメリカで活躍した画家、イラストレー
ターで、ポスターや雑誌の表紙、挿絵などで人気を博しました。美しく澄んだ青色を使用したことでも知
られ、それは「パリッシュ・ブルー」と呼ばれています。本書はパリッシュが挿絵を手掛けた書物のなか
でも最高傑作といわれています。
