cloth backed pictorial boards, preserved in buff pictorial dustwrapper. Externally fine and fresh, internally
equally clean with some creasing to fore edge on front free endpaper and one short closed and now almost
unnoticeable repaired tear to lower edge of one age-toning, small nicking to head and tail of spine, and one
short closed tear to top edge of lower panel, but still in exceptional condition and a scarce survival. Early
German edition of a book first issued in Swedish in 1901. The first German edition appeared in 1903.

最初のしかけ部分が修復されていますが、しかけはすべて問題なく動きます。
ザイトマン＝フロイト (1892-1930) は女性の絵本作家で、本名はマルタ・ゲルトルードですが " トム " と
いう男性名を使っていました。
彼女の作品の中でも最もよく知られているのが、
「不思議な家 (Das Wunderhaus, 1927)」と「魔法のボート (Das
Zuaberboot, 1929)」の２つのしかけ絵本で、本書は後者の英語版です。心理学者フロイトの姪で、ユダヤ系
であったため、ヒトラー政権時代にその著作の多くが失われ、英語版の本書も稀少です。(12594)

開くとキリスト降誕のシーンが現れるしかけ絵本です。J.F. Schreiber は、子ども向けの絵本や、着せ替え
人形などの紙のおもちゃを主に手掛ける出版社で、特にメッゲンドルファーのしかけ絵本の出版で有名で
す。1880 年代後半、
「劇場絵本」と名付けられたしかけ絵本がドイツ内外でベストセラーとなり、本書も
その類型にあると思われます。(12602)

しかけの１つが開きにくくなっています。
ジラウドはイギリスの Daily Express で児童書編集者として勤務しながら、しかけ絵本の年刊誌の作成に携
わっていました。新聞社を退社後も、"Bookano Stories" という名でしかけ絵本を世に送り出し続けました。
1929 年から 1949 年の間に Strand Publications の名の元、16 冊の Bookano Stories を出版しました。彼のしか
けは様々な方向から見
ることができ、ページ
を開いた際どのシーン
も折れてないという点
で "living models" と呼
ばれ高く評価されてい
ました。また、初期ド
イツの高価なしかけ絵
本に比べ、手に入り易
い価格で流通していま
