宮崎海外特派員 Elizabeth Lemons エリザベス・レモンズ（アメリカ）【職種：元外国語指導助手（ALT）勤務先：都城市学校教育課期間：2008.9～2009.8】 Hello from snowy Virginia! Since coming home four months ago my life has been hectic. I have moved, helped deliver a baby, and started a new job. In August, I moved to a town called Woodbridge, about 2 hours from my hometown. It is closer to Washington, D.C., and I thought I’d have an easier time finding a job. Well, it wasn’t easy and it took almost two months, but I now work for the Social Services Department in my county. We help people get food and medical care when they have no resources. I am still working on getting certified to teach high school and it is still my goal to be an English teacher, but until then, I am proud to be helping people in another way. In October, my best friend gave birth to her third child, a beautiful baby girl named Asher. I was in the hospital with her and helped take care of the two older ones. 雪の多いバージニア州から、ハロー！４ヶ月前に帰国して以来、大忙しの生活をしている。引っ越したり、赤ちゃんを取り上げたり、新しい仕事に就いたりした。８月に、ウードブリッジ町という、私の地元から２時間ぐらい離れた町に引っ越した。ワシントンＤＣにより近い町なので、もっと簡単に就職できるだろうと思った。しかし、思ったより就職が簡単ではなく、そして２ヶ月ほどかかったのだが、今は郡の社会福祉部で働いている。そこでは、財産のない人が食料や医療を利用できるようなサポートを提供する。高校教員免許を取得中で、英語教師になる目標を目指しているが、目標達成までは、別の方法で人を助ける仕事を誇りに思っています。１０月に、私の親友は３人目の子供を出産し、アシャーという美しい女の子だった。私は一緒に病院にいて、もう２人の子供の面倒を見ていた。 During November I spent lots of time with my family. My parents and I went to an oyster festival. There was so much good food! They also had a shucking contest and a parade. It was a lot of fun. November is also the time of a national holiday called Thanksgiving. This year, some of my Mom’s family came to our house to celebrate. There were 11 people and a dog, all sleeping in our house. We had a big turkey and lots of other delicious food. We gave thanks for all of the blessings in our lives. It was a little crowded, but a wonderful time. １１月中ずっと、家族と多くの時間を過ごしていた。両親と一緒にカキ祭りに行き、おいしい食べ物が多かった！殻取り大会やパレードも行われて、すごく楽しかった。サンクスギビング（感謝祭）という祝日も１１月にある。今年は、母方の親戚が家に来て、一緒に祝った。１１人の親族と、１匹の犬がみんな、私の家で寝ていた。大きな七面鳥や他に色々な美味しい食べ物を食べ、人生の全ての恩恵に感謝した。ちょっと忙しかったが、素晴らしい時間を過ごせた。 December meant more time with family, but this time it was just my parents and I. I like to go back to my hometown to see them on the weekends and I spent Christmas with them as well. In my family, we go to a tree farm to get our Christmas tree and this year we got one that was seven feet tall. My favorite part of Christmas is decorating the tree, because we all work together and it transforms from a plain tree to a centerpiece of celebration. I also love to watch Christmas movies. My favorite one is A Christmas Carol. It’s a ghost story about a bitter old man who is reminded how to be happy by the spirits of Christmases past, present, and future. I’m looking forward to New Year’s Eve and celebrating with my friends. １２月も家族と多くの時間を過ごしたが、今月は私と両親だけだった。週末、地元に帰って家族に会うのが楽しみで、クリスマスも一緒に時間を過ごした。私の家族は毎年、樹木農場にクリスマス・ツリーを買いに行くが、今年は高さが７フィート（２．１３メートル）のツリーを買った。私にとってクリスマスの一番好きなところは、ツリーに飾りを付けることだ。なぜなら、みんなの協働で普通の木がお祝いの中心に変わるからだ。クリスマスの映画を見ることも大好きなのだ。最も好きなのは、「クリスマスキャロル」だ。冷酷なおじいさんが巻き込まれたこのゴーストストーリでは、「過去のクリスマス」、「現在のクリスマス」、そして「未来のクリスマス」という３人の幽霊がおじいさんに人生の喜びについての教訓を与える話だ。また、大晦日を友達と一緒に祝うことも楽しみしている。 I constantly get asked about my time in Miyazaki and I love to talk about the students and teachers I worked with. I tell people about my seven schools and their similarities and differences. Some of them had very few students, some of them had very many. One of them was in the middle of the city, two of them were way out in the country. They all had different uniforms. Most of my students, no matter which school they were from, were very friendly and hard-working. The teachers were all very good and great at giving me just what I needed to prepare for the lessons. Sometimes I get emails from my students telling me how they’re doing or just wishing me well. They always make me smile. I have a friend who is applying for the JET Program now and I suggested that he ask to be placed in Miyazaki because I had such a wonderful experience there. Thank you, Miyazaki! 私は、宮崎で過ごした時間について頻繁に聞かれ、一緒に働いた先生方と生徒達について話すのが大好きだ。私が通った７つの学校の共通点や相違点についてみんなに教える。例えば、生徒が非常に少ない学校や非常に多い学校もあり、市内にある１つの学校と離れた田舎にある２つの学校でも働いていた。学校によって、制服が違うことなど。どの学校の生徒にしても、とても優しくて勤勉な生徒ばかりだった。先生方も素晴らしい人で、レッスンの準備をするために、必要な援助をいつもしてくれたのだ。時々、自分の事情や幸福の願いを伝えたメールが生徒たちから届いて、読むたびに微笑む。今ＪＥＴプログラムを申し込んでいる友達がいるが、私の素晴らしい経験から見ると宮崎県の配置を希望した方が良いと勧めた。宮崎、ありがとう！ The picture attached is of my mother and I at the oyster festival. この写真は、カキ祭りで撮られた私の母の写真だ。
