St. Bonaventure Church 5th Sunday of Easter May 3, 2015

St. Bonaventure Church
5th Sunday of Easter
May 3, 2015
Introduction of our new Pastor,
Fr. Michael Swanton
at St. Bonaventure-Summer 2015
I was born April 27, 1965, and raised in Casper, Wyoming. I am the oldest
son of Patrick, who taught high school Latin and English, and Joan, a stay-athome mom. My brother, Jim, is four years younger and is married to Tricia
Petersen from Tioga, North Dakota. They live in Billings, Montana, with
their two elementary-age children, Kylie and Kennadie. Jim and Tricia are
physical therapists. Steve, my youngest brother, is three years younger than
Jim, is single and is a city planner in Las Vegas. My Mom died of lung cancer February 3, 2010, and my Dad still lives in Casper in the home I grew up
in. My family is very close and communicates with each other several times
a week.
Attending Natrona County High School in Casper, I lettered in swimming and cross-country running, as well as participated in singing groups and plays. A Catholic retreat at the
beginning of my senior year in high school changed my life. I was raised Catholic, but now my faith life became
significant. This was the seed of my vocation. However, I felt a desire to follow in my father’s footsteps of being
an English teacher. After graduating in 1983, I attended Casper Community College and later graduated from
the University of Wyoming in 1987 with a BA in education.
I held various teaching positions for six years, yet my heart was restless. After leaving the teaching field,
I held ten jobs in 13 years trying to determine my place in life. One of those jobs was selling Kirby vacuum
cleaners door to door, a position I held for five years—three in Casper and two in Omaha, after moving to a bigger market area in 1996 with nine other sales people. I also worked for two years in the newsroom at the Omaha
World Herald, where one of my jobs was copy editing.
Still restless and desiring a more balanced life, I decided to seek direction from a blind Jesuit priest, Fr.
Larry Gillick from Creighton University in Omaha. After several meetings, I realized God was calling me to be
a priest. The signs were evident: a happy family life fostered by solid religious values and immersion in Catholic
culture; no job brought as much satisfaction as when I was involved in religious activities with friends; regular
prayer and study of the Bible and the Catholic faith; and no girlfriend seemed to be the “right one” for marriage.
So I concluded, “Why don’t I just follow my hobby?!”
In the Fall of 2000, I entered Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in St. Louis, studied for five years, and was ordained for the Archdiocese of Omaha June 4, 2005. My Dad’s age-old license plate number 645 seemed to confirm the vocation that God had directed all along. I was the assistant pastor of St. Stephen the Martyr until 2008
when I moved to St. Wenceslaus in Omaha. Fr. Mel Merwald, the pastor, suffered from Parkinson’s disease and
had to retire. I became the administrator of the parish for nine months until March of 2011 when I was assigned
to St. Mary’s in Osmond and St. Jane Frances de Chantal in Randolph. My favorite activities as a priest are to
celebrate the Sacrament of the Sick and give spiritual direction and counseling.
My favorite sport is downhill skiing, but I also enjoy waterskiing and golf. I’m a fan of the Huskers and Denver Broncos. To relax, I like to spend time with friends, travel, take walks, read, watch movies and
play acoustic guitar.

5th Sunday of Easter
May 3, 2015
th
May 7, 2015 marks the 14 annual celebration
honoring the National Day of Prayer in Columbus, NE. This year’s guest speak is Paul Young.
Wm Paul Young, author of the world-wide best
sellers, The Shack and Cross Roads, is one of the
finest speakers available to the church today. The life-changing
stories that mark the last six years since The Shack was released
- stories of redemption, of healing, of suicide prevention, of
mercy and forgiveness, and of new life in relationships with
friends, family and with God provide insight into the amazing
love of God that radically transformed Paul's life. In his own
words, his life became a complete "wreck" until he had only
two remaining choices: Confess everything and take the long
road toward healing, or die. The weekend with God in The
Shack represents eleven long and difficult years in recovery and
healing with his wife, Kim, and their family.

Credit reports exist to help lenders understand your creditworthiness. When you borrow, you are making a promise. As the
Catechism says, “Promises must be kept and contracts strictly
observed to the extent that the commitments made in them are
morally just” (2410). Our credit reports should reflect the seriousness with which we make such promises. You can obtain your
