March 29, 2015 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Holy Name of Mary Parish Serving San Dimas and La Verne and surrounding communities Staffed by the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary May those who live at the limits of endurance be met with the tenderness of your touch, and may your garments of resurrection enfold those who dwell at the threshold of despair. Bless this flesh, this aching, hopeful, wearied, wondering flesh where you make your home. In this temple of your spirit, sing the song of transformation that will lead us to your waters, that will make these dry bones dance. -Anonymous Page 2 Holy Name of Mary Parish My dear sisters and brothers, Together we begin a week the Church has designated as Holy. Your choices in how to celebrate this week will define what kind of a week it will be wherever you are, whatever you do, however you do it. This week let us remember in someone there is always something to love. Lorraine Hansberry’s renowned play A Raisin in the Sun is the story of the Younger family, an African-American family living in a rundown apartment in Chicago in the late 1950’s. The family inherits $10,000 from their late father’s life insurance policy. Lena, the family matriarch, wants to use the money as a down-payment on a small country house. Daughter Beneatha sees the money as a chance to realize her dream of going to medical school – but son Walter Lee, who works as a chauffeur for a rich white businessman, harbors dreams of opening his own business. Walter persuades his mother to let him use the money to open a liquor store with his friend. He promises that he can give back to the family all the good things their hard lives had denied them. Against her better judgment, Lena agrees. Sure enough, the son’s “partner” skips town with the money. The distraught son can hardly bring himself to tell his mother and sister what happened. Beneatha launches into an angry tirade against her brother. At one point in her angry denunciation, her mother admonishes, “Beneatha, I thought I taught you to love your brother.” “Love him!” Beneatha says contemptuously. “There is nothing left to love.” Her mother stops her. “There is always something to love. And if you ain’t learned that, you ain’t learned nothing. Have you cried for that boy today? I don’t mean for yourself and the family because we lost all that money. I mean for him: for what he’s been through and what it done to him. Child, when do you think is the time to love somebody the most: when they done good and made things easy for everybody? Well then, you ain’t through learning because that ain’t the time at all. It’s when he’s at his lowest and can’t believe in himself ‘cause the world done whipped him so. When you starts measuring somebody, measure him right, child, measure him right. Make sure you done take into account what hills and valleys he come through before he got where he is.” Regardless of what evils and disappointments befall us, regardless of the messes we make of our lives and the lives of those we love, Lena Younger has it right: There is always something left to love. And the worst things are the more reason there is to love. In Jesus, God has assured us of his love, his acceptance, his understanding and peace – especially when times are the darkest, the most hopeless, the most despairing. When we use things in a throwaway manner, we, too, are somehow thrown away. We invite disregard. For convenience and speed we let go of living moments that are our precious life. We hurry towards a deadline instead of savoring a lifeline. Could we enjoy a cup and really drink from it? Could we peacefully clear our tables and our minds? Could we linger with ordinary objects and discover the prayer in them? Objects in themselves have integrity. We seem to think so when we send them in the mail – Handle with Care, our packages say. Could we learn to do so daily during the little distances that things are handled and moved from here to there? Could we move with care, touch with care, and ever so slowly become care-full? This week let us handle each other with care, Love, Fr. Rich, SS.CC. Cabinets for literature and pamphlets are one of the things we are planning. The “veterans’ wall” is beautiful and I don’t know of another church that has anything like it. It speaks volumes of the respect and love you have for our men and women in uniform and our veterans. Unfortunately, it has become a bit much and is overflowing. The tables are being removed and we will use only the shelving for display. Unfortunately, there are too many pictures for the shelving. They will be rotated throughout the year and all of them will be displayed at the Veterans Day Mass in November. Also, many of the pictures have no indication of who the person is or who it belongs to. PLEASE put that information on the back of the picture.
