Saint Joseph Church Mission Statement
We, the people of Saint Joseph Church, by the grace of God,
born again in the waters of Baptism, seek to create a
community where our mutual faith in Jesus as Lord and
Savior, encourages us to continue growing as disciples. We
believe that discipleship is a way of life. We strive to show
that we are committed disciples, eager to welcome the
stranger, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and comfort
the bereaved. Inspired by God’s word and nourished by the
Eucharist, we pledge ourselves to active discipleship all for
God’s greater glory and honor.

GOSPEL QUESTION
The office of Faith Formation thanks our Tuesday and Sunday students who have made their best effort in responding
to the Gospel Question while participating in Mass every week. Next Tuesday/Wednesday (final session) we will
give our students a little token for when they had answer five, ten, fifteen and more questions. Please, notice that our
students in grades 1-5 will have a ‘social’ ice-cream and ‘Pentecost’ cake (in advance to the celebration for Pentecost)
too. Meanwhile, our students in grades 6, 7, and 8 will receive their little souvenir for their effort put on answering
five, ten, fifteen or more Bible Questions while they celebrate with NET, a team of young missionaries doing wonders
with their ministry of evangelization. Dismissal time for our Middle School children will be at 9:30 pm.
Re-Registration:
By this time our Sunday families have received a re-registration form in the mail. Our Tuesday families will receive their reregistration forms in the mail this week. If at the end of the week you have not received it, please contact our office for a copy of it
because some of our programs and schedules will change. It is important that you are aware of those changes so that you register your
child for a day and a time that is going to be convenient to your family. We have updated the Parent’s Handbook. As parents you need
to have the parent’s handbook for it explains our policies for the different
programs. Thus, consider registering your children in person in order to receive your handbook. Please, register your
children by July 1, 2015 to avoid paying a late fee.
Are you a NEW FAMILY in our parish and/or in our Faith Formation Program?
New registrations for our Faith Formation programs will be offered to our new families starting on Friday, May 15, 2015. Please know
that in order to register new children in the program; the Archdiocese of Newark ask all parishes to accept the families as new parishioners. Please, register your family in the parish by coming to the rectory during business hours and filling a new family form. Once
your family has been registered, our office of Faith Formation will be able to pull your family information so that we can assign a program and a class for your child/ren. Also, bring a copy of your child/ren’s baptismal certificate (if he/they have been baptized) when
you come to our office to fill in the registration form.
For further questions, please call our office at 201-343-4316

LOVE ONE ANOTHER
Last Sunday we heard the familiar passage from John’s Gospel
in which Jesus uses the metaphor of the vine and the branches. In
that passage we were told that if we remained in Christ we would
bear much fruit. Today’s Gospel tells us just what that fruit is: love.
Today’s second reading and Gospel together create a great hymn to
love. The chorus of this hymn is simple—God loves us so much
that Jesus was sent into the world so that we would have life. The
Lord Jesus, who last week told us to remain in him, this week tells
us to remain in his love. In a world marked by division and
terrorism, the Lord’s final words in today’s Gospel are a great
challenge: “This I command you: love one another.” Copyright © J.
S. Paluch Co.
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — The gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on the
Gentiles also (Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48).
Psalm — The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power
(Psalm 98).
Second Reading — God is love (1 John 4:7-10) or 1 John 4:11-16.
Gospel — No one has greater love than this: to lay down one’s life
for one’s friends (John 15:9-17) or
John 17:11b-19.
Cristo daremos mucho fruto.

"One of our dearest traditions in the Catholic Church is to
show our love and devotion to the Blessed Mother Mary with a May Crowning.
In this special adoration, we recognize Mary as Queen of heaven and earth.
Let us pray to Mother Mary for her guidance, her love, and, to intercede to her son, Jesus Christ on our behalf.
On May 10th at the 10AM Mass, St Joseph Church, and the Filipino Apostolate invite all
to witness the crowning of the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
This year, the May Crowning also falls on the same day as Mother's Day.
We are making a special request to all the mother's, grandmother's and maternal figures whom we are honoring on
Mother's Day to receive a special rose to be offered to our Blessed Mother during mass."
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
With June not far off, attention in the parish turns to
the celebration of weddings. Perhaps no other area of parish life is more shaped or challenged by the expectations
of our culture. An old Irish proverb, “Marry in Lent and
you’re soon to repent,” is amplified by another warning:
“Marry in May and rue the day!” Memories of old pagan
parties in May endured, and the Irish felt wedding receptions in May would be a stress on community morals.
Queen Victoria did not approve of May weddings either,
and her influence is still felt on family calendars, as is her
daughter’s introduction of the white wedding gown.
Sometimes we mistake customs and curiosities for tradition. Tradition with a capital “T” has to do with Christ’s
miraculous rescue of the wedding feast at Cana, his affirmation of a man and woman pledging lifelong fidelity at
the heart of a community’s feast. The Church cherished
that memory over time, but it took a millennium for us to
think of marriage as a sacrament. Much of the rest of what
we associate with weddings has to do with culture, customs, and family practices. A wise rabbi once said that
“tradition is not wearing your father’s hat; tradition is having a child.” Don’t let Queen Victoria reign over your
wedding plans!

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Knights of Columbus Chief Justice White Council works with
Family Promise of Bergen County
Family Promise assists working families with dependent
children, who are temporarily homeless, due to financial or other
problems. Family Promise works with churches and synagogues in
Bergen County to provide temporary shelter for these working
homeless families as they strive to overcome the crisis of
homelessness.
Local congregations host the families, generally from
about 6:00 PM, overnight, through about 6:30 AM, on a weekly
rotating basis. Volunteers from the Knights, and other organizations, purchase and prepare food for the evening meal, serve dinner, clean up, and provide needed support to children and adults.
2-3 volunteers also serve as “overnight hosts” during the stays.
Saint Anastasia’s and Saint Joseph’s co-host these families, 3 to 4 times a year, in Saint Anastasia’s Little Church. The
next occasion is the week of May 10-17, 2015. The Knights of
Columbus are proud to support this effort, preparing the dinner meal,
doing the clean-up, and staying as overnight hosts.
The Knights are looking for volunteers to support these
working families in their time of temporary need. You don’t need to
be a Knight to help!

TUITION ANGEL FUND
As we know, the downturn of the economy in recent years has had a tremendous impact on all of us. Many families who have
students in Catholic schools feel the ever increasing pressures of meeting their family's needs along with the additional impact of tuition.
We here at Saint Joseph Academy have established a "Tuition Angel Fund". The purpose of the fund is to help families who are
struggling financially yet are committed to providing their child(ren) with a Catholic education. We look to our parishioners to help us keep
this vital resource available to the young families of our parish. Please consider making regular donations to this fund knowing that you are
helping spread the word of God through your generosity by supporting some very needy families and their children in Saint Joseph Academy. Donations may also be made in memory of a loved one or a friend with an acknowledgement being sent to their family. We even
have children that look to share their blessings by asking their families to make donations to the "Tuition Angel" fund instead of receiving
presents at birthdays, holidays, etc.
Also, if your resources are such, please consider "adopting" a student, thus supporting a student(s) by paying all or part
of the monthly tuition. We have many single parents and families who desperately would like their child to attend Saint Joseph Academy
but do not have the resources to pay. Please feel free to add your check to the weekly Vestibule Area-lection basket in an envelope clearly
marked "Tuition Angel" or contact the school office for more information at 201-487-8641. May God bless your generosity. Your donations can truly make a difference in a young child's life.
