Different gifts, the same Giver
Pentecost
The season of Easter
concludes with today's
celebration, the feast of
Pentecost. On Pentecost we
celebrate the descent of the
Holy Spirit upon the
apostles gathered in the
upper room in Jerusalem;
this event marks the beginning of the Church. The story
of Pentecost is found in the Acts of the Apostles, today's
first reading. The account in today's Gospel, John 20:1923, also recounts how Jesus gave the gift of the Holy
Spirit to his disciples. Yet the event in John's Gospel
takes place on Easter Sunday. There is no need to try to
reconcile these two accounts. It is enough that we know
that after his death, Jesus fulfilled his promise to send to
his disciples a helper, an Advocate, who would enable
them to be his witnesses throughout the world.

the official Vatican clockwinder. Pope John Paul II
received this German-born
clockmaker and his family in a
special audience at the time of
his retirement.
In the context of the feast of Pentecost, today’s Gospel
from John reminds us about the integral connection
between the gifts of peace and forgiveness and the
action of the Holy Spirit. Jesus greets his disciples with
the gift of peace. Jesus then commissions his disciples
to continue the work that he has begun: “As the Father
has sent me, so I send you.” He breathes the Holy Spirit
upon the disciples and sends them to continue his work
of reconciliation through the forgiveness of sins. Jesus'
act of breathing the Holy Spirit upon the apostles
mirrors God's act of breathing life into Adam. In fact,
both the Greek and Hebrew words for “spirit” can also
be translated as “breath.” This Gospel reminds us that
the Church is called to be a reconciling presence in the
world. The reconciling presence of Christ is celebrated
in the Church's sacramental life. In the Sacrament of
Baptism, we are cleansed of sin and become a new
creation in Christ. In the Sacrament of Penance, the
Church celebrates the mercy of God through the forgiveness of sins. This reconciling presence is also to be
a way of life for Christians. In situations of conflict, we
are to be agents of peace and harmony among people.

Max Herr was certainly not the most important figure in the
central offices of the Catholic church. But the role he played
in the Vatican, however humble, was expert and indispensable. The popes are called by God to save eternal souls, but
they must do their work in a world where time rules. In a
sense for 52 years this German clockmaker had kept the
whole Church going!

There are some 50 pendulum clocks in the Vatican. Since
1929, Herr had made the rounds every Friday winding and
resetting them. When they or the many non-pendulum
clocks needed repair, he would clean and overhaul them.
Six popes had been his friends, and he had many
"professional" memories of them. Pope Pius XII used to
have him set all the clocks fifteen minutes ahead. Pope Paul
VI found ticking clocks a distraction, so he kept only one
timepiece in his rooms: a small alarm clock he had used
since seminary days. American friends gave John Paul II a
grandfather chime clock when he was installed as pope.
That is what St. Paul meant when he said, "There are different gifts but the same Spirit; there are different ministries but
the same Lord." Whether great or small, we should all be
happy to use our God-given talents for the benefit of others.

the birthday of the Church? It is
called that because Pentecost is
when the apostles went out
among the people and began
spreading Jesus' message, thus
establishing the beginning of the
Church. Pentecost (Greek for "50th day") is celebrated by
Christians 50 days after Easter, and marks the day that the
Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles while they were
cowering and hiding behind locked doors following Jesus'
resurrection. After receiving the power and gifts of the Holy
Spirit, the apostles immediately went out and preached
Jesus' message to everyone—even those who spoke other
languages.

Heavenly Father,
In Peals of Laughter
On this Memorial Day, we pray
for those who courageously laid
down their lives for the cause of
freedom. May the examples of
their sacrifice inspire in us the
selfless love of Your Son, our
Lord Jesus Christ.
Some of my mother’s funniest stories were based
on real-life incidents from her childhood. One of
these took place on the feast of Pentecost. She
had volunteered, with other children from her Latin
Rite parish, to sing in a pickup choir for Pentecost
at a nearby Eastern Rite Catholic Church. In that
church they had a custom of releasing a dove
from the choir loft after the priest chanted, in Slovak, “Come Holy
Spirit!” It was a beautiful ritual. One year, however, the gentleman
who brought the dove held it under his coat too long. The dove
suffocated. No sooner had he discovered this than the solemn
chant began. “Come Holy Spirit!” Nothing happened. Thinking the
man with the dove had missed his cue, the priest sang out again:
“Come Holy Spirit!” Again, nothing. What could the poor man do?
The bird was dead. A third time the priest chanted, even louder,
“Come Holy Spirit!” Finally, in desperation, the man with the dove
chanted back, also in Slovak: “The Holy Spirit choked himself!”
Bless the families of our fallen
troops, and fill their homes and their lives with
Your strength and peace.
In union with people of goodwill of every
nation, embolden us to answer the call to work
for peace and justice, and thus, seek an end to
violence and conflict around the globe.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Kid’s Corner
Jesus told the disciples that God would send
someone to help them tell people about Him.
There isn’t really any moral to the story. We just rolled on the floor
laughing every time my mother told it.
As I think about it now, as an adult, I suspect part of the reason we
found it so amusing was because the very idea that somehow we
can “capture” or “release” the Holy Spirit at will is inherently funny.
We may try to take control, of course, whether by preparing the
perfect liturgy, creating the perfect family, pursuing the perfect career, or cultivating the perfect parish—and sometimes it seems like
we’ve got the Spirit “in hand.” But then life takes over, and comedy
results. Yet all is not lost. The Holy Spirit comes unbidden, in peals
of laughter, as her children remember that God is bigger than all
our plans.

Come Holy Spirit
The Book of Acts uses the Old Testament
images of God's presence -- fire and wind
-- to depict the coming of God, the Holy
Spirit, who comes to enable the church to
begin its mission of proclaiming the
Gospel to all nations. The gift of tongues
tells us that the coming of the Spirit
reverses the confusion and division that
came upon the earth at the time of the
Tower of Babel. However, as St. Paul tells
us, it is easy to become so taken up with the dramatic and
spectacular gifts of the Spirit, like the gift of tongues, that we
may forget the reason for these gifts. The gifts of the Spirit are
not given for our personal enjoyment or prestige, but for the
common good of the Church, to build up the Body of Christ. In
today's Gospel Jesus gives the spirit and the power to forgive
sins so that the Church may fulfill its mission of reconciliation
-- "to reconcile all things in Christ." What ever gifts we may
have been given, no matter how spectacular or commonplace
they may be, they are given to be used for others.
Come Holy Spirit, give us the wisdom to recognize the gifts you
have given us. Inspire us to use these gifts in harmony with
others that we may all become more truly the Body of Christ.

La venida del Espíritu Santo
se describe acompañada de
sucesos, expresados como si
se tratara de fenómenos sensibles: ruido como de viento
huracanado, lenguas como de
fuego que consume o acrisola, Espíritu (ruah: aire,
aliento vital, respiración) Santo (hagios: separado,
divino). Es el modo que elige San Lucas para expresa lo inenarrable, la irrupción de un Espíritu que
liberaría del miedo y del temor a los discípulos y
les haría hablar con libertad para promulgar la buena noticia de la muerte y resurrección de Jesús.
Por esto, recibido el Espíritu, comienzan
todos a hablar lenguas diferentes. Esto significa que
el movimiento de Jesús nace abierto a todo el mundo y a todos, que Dios ya no quiere la uniformidad,
sino la pluralidad; que no quiere la confrontación
sino el diálogo; que ha comenzado una nueva era en
la que hay que proclamar que todos pueden ser hermanos, no sólo a pesar de, sino gracias a las diferencias; que ya es posible entenderse superando todo tipo de barreras que impiden la comunicación.
Porque este Espíritu de Dios no es Espíritu
de monotonía o de uniformidad: es políglota, polifónico. El Espíritu que pone de acuerdo a gente
que tiene puntos de vista distintos o modos de ser
diferentes. El día de Pentecostés, no vino, como en
Babel con más confusión. "Cada uno los oía hablar
en su propio idioma de las maravillas de Dios".
Dios hacía posible el milagro de entenderse. Se estrenó así la nueva Babel, un mundo diferente, pero
acorde. Y la venida del Espíritu Santo significó
para aquel grupo de discípulos el fin del miedo y
del temor. Las puertas de la comunidad se abrieron.
Nació una comunidad humana, libre como viento,
como fuego ardiente. San Pablo dice: "Donde hay
Espíritu de Dios hay libertad" y donde hay libertad se fomenta la pluralidad y la individualidad, como camino de unidad y verdad, porque el Espíritu
es veraz y nos guiará por el camino de la verdad, de
la autenticidad, de la vida, como dice San Juan en
su evangelio.
Gracias al grupo de la Divina Misericordia por
