Day of Prayer for the
Legal Protection of Unborn Children
Thursday, January 22nd
Hearing and
Responding
We cannot truly be
disciples of Christ
unless we, too,
hear God’s call and
respond by
transforming our lives, evidenced in the simple willingness to be obedient to God’s will and take up the saving
mission of Christ. This means more than keeping
commandments or even of simply going to Mass on
Sunday; it means that our whole lives are directed to
being faithful in our allegiance to Christ and identifying
with him so completely that his life is ours, his mission
is ours, his total self-giving is ours.
Identifying with Christ and continuing his self-giving
work of salvation make demands on us. Like Andrew in
the Gospel, we must boldly announce the Presence of
Christ in our midst and bring others to Jesus. We do
this best by living as he did: caring for others, bringing
a healing touch, working at developing a deeper
relationship with Christ through liturgy and prayer. The
demand is surely there: become so intimate with Jesus
that we do not waver in our love for him nor in our
growing in his life-giving, total self-giving.
The over 56 million
abortions since the 1973
decisions of Roe v. Wade
and Doe v. Bolton reflect
with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis
means by a “throwaway
culture.” However, we have
great trust in God’s providence. We are reminded time
and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as
people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard.
In all the Dioceses of the United States of America,
January 22nd shall be observed as a particular day of
prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the
right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of
the human person committed through acts of abortion.
As individuals, we are called to observe this day through
the penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or giving
alms. Another way to take part is through participating in
special events to observe the anniversary of Roe v.
Wade. For more information, visit the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop’s website at www.usccb.org.

Prayer for Christian Unity Octave
January 18-25
The word “octave” comes from the Latin word for eight. According to the first creation story in the
Book of Genesis, God created the world in seven days. Seven is a number which represents
wholeness and completion. The resurrection of Jesus was called the “eighth day” by the earliest
Christians, because now life was lived in a whole new dimension of freedom.
The Church Unity Octave is eight days of special prayer for the reunion of all Christians. At the Last Supper Jesus prayed for his
followers “that they all may be one.” But Christians have sometimes forgotten that we are all one body with Christ as our head. We
think of ourselves instead as Eastern or Western, Protestant or Catholic.
In recent years the churches have made important steps toward understanding each other. Pope John XXIII made history by inviting
leaders of other Christian churches to the Vatican. When he called the Roman Catholic bishops to the Second Vatican Council,
Anglicans, Methodists, Quakers, Congregationalists, Lutherans and Orthodox were included as observers. Nothing like this had ever
been seen.
The churches continue to work together toward greater harmony. But prayer is still needed so that the body of Christ on earth can be
strong and united. That will help the people of the world hear the voice of Christ speaking clearly.
The church prays for Christian unity all during the year. But during the week of the Church Unity Octave we pray with special
concern. We ask that all Christians might be able to work together. The Church Unity Octave ends on January 25th—the feast of the
Conversion of St. Paul.

“As believers, how can we fail to see that abortion,
euthanasia, and assisted suicide are a terrible rejection of
God’s gift of life and love? And as believers, how can we fail
to feel the duty to surround the sick and those in distress
with the warmth of our affection and the support that will
help them always to embrace life?” —St. John Paul II

as well as her compassionate humanity
and concern for others, and the deep love that she and Jesus
shared for one another. The movie underscores her special role in
God’s plan for our redemption, her unique relationship with Christ,
and the tremendous suffering that she endured in union with his
passion and death, as well as her serene joy at his Resurrection.

want from him. How would you answer if Jesus asked you,
“What are you looking for?”

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Ordinary Time
During Ordinary Time this
year on most Sundays we
proclaim the Good News
according to Mark (Year B),
and follow the Gospel
narrative from the call of
the disciples at the beginning of Mark’s Gospel to
confrontation with the cross
to the joy of the resurrection near the end. Each Sunday liturgy brings
us a piece of how salvation unfolds in the
Gospel of Mark. What we can unfailingly
expect during Ordinary Time—if we are faithful
to our paschal mystery/Gospel journey—is that
God will transform us in some particular way
during this particular year.
The first period of Ordinary Time (from the
Christmas season until the beginning of Lent)
focuses on the early events in Jesus’ public
life; especially the call of the disciples and the
beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. These
weeks at the beginning of the new civil year
might be a good time for each of us to assess
how well we hear God’s relentless call to be
faithful followers of Jesus. Each of us can
probably recall times when we have turned
deaf ears to God; if we remember that God’s
call is relentless, then we might be encouraged
to listen more carefully and sooner. God won’t
let go!

Kid’s Corner
Your Body is Special!
You may not think
of your body as
very special; after
all, it is there
every day doing its
job. In today’s Second Reading, St. Paul
tells us that our bodies have a special
purpose as members of Christ. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Our
bodies are to be respected and cared
for. Each of us, within our human bodies,
holds a little of that divine spark, the
Spirit of God!

Many thanks to everyone who helped us

Blessing of Parents after a Miscarriage
Compassionate God,
Soothe the hearts of these parents,
And grant that through the prayers of Mary,
Who grieved by the cross for her Son,
You may enlighten their faith,
Give hope to their hearts,
And peace to their lives.
Lord, grant mercy to all the members of this family and
comfort them with the hope that one day we will all live
with you, with your Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit,
for ever and ever. Amen.
A Charism of Life
From the mind and
heart of God you
became a unique
someone, and he called you by name, a gift to the
world—not for what you can do but for who you are, a
unique, beautiful, and unrepeatable person, an
expression of God’s goodness and love, an icon of the
living God, called to communion with him, that his love
and life might be shared with the world.

y a curar'' (Lc 9,2).
