12 APRIL 2015  DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
Today we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. This feast
that we celebrate today came to us from a humble and holy religious
sister, Helen Kowalska, born in 1905 in Glogowiec, Poland. As
a youngster, Helen was known for her genuine piety, depth
of prayer, and concern for the poor. At 20 she entered the
Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy and took the
name Sister Maria Faustina of the Most Blessed Sacrament. In
her community, she worked as a cook, gardener, and porter.
Her inner life was very rich as the Lord blessed her with many
extraordinary spiritual gifts. Jesus communicated to Sister
Maria Faustina that she was to be the apostle of His Divine
Mercy in our modern world. Sister Faustina Kowalska died of
tuberculosis at 33.
On April 30, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized her as the first
saint of the Great Jubilee Year. During his homily on that
occasion, the Holy Father also announced that the Second
Sunday of Easter would now be celebrated throughout the
entire Church as Divine Mercy Sunday.
In her diary, Saint Faustina reported this message of the Savior:
“My daughter, tell the whole world about my inconceivable
mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and a shelter
for all souls, and especially for the poor sinners. On that day the
very depths of my tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole
ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of my
mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy
Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and
punishment. On that day are opened all the divine floodgates
through which graces flow. Let no soul fear to draw near to me,
even though its sins be as scarlet” (699).
Happy Feast of the Divine Mercy!

12 APRIL 2015  DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
"The community of believers was
of one heart and mind, and no one
claimed that any of his
possessions was his own, but they
had everything in common. With
great power the apostles bore
witness to the resurrection of the
Lord Jesus, and great favor was
accorded them all. There was no
needy person among them..."
(Acts 4:32-34a)
I have known her for her entire
life and I have invited her and her
husband to spend some time this
Sunday afternoon in the midst of
this St. Irenaeus community of
believers that is of one heart and
mind....
The first reading today speaks
of a group of people, like you, that
came together and sacrificed for
others. "Those who owned property
or houses would sell them, bring
the proceeds of the sale, and put
them at the feet of the apostles...
and they were distributed to each
according to need (Acts 4:34b35)."
Let me catch you up on what
you have recently given: March 22
- $30,298; Palm Sunday - $34,688;
Holy Thursday - $3,029 (for
H.O.P.E); and, Good Friday $4,041 (for the Holy Lands). This
past Easter weekend you and
our guests placed at the feet of
the apostles' successors
$65,796 (not counting the hundreds
of volunteer ministry hours and the
continuous stream of food donations
to H.O.P.E.)! Thank you!
With great power, you bear
witness to the resurrection of the
Lord Jesus and I yearn for my
baby sister's healing through your
prayers. The cancer is back.
Pope John Paul II told us that,
"in this time of unprecedented evil,
Jesus is giving us unprecedented
grace" and that "he will give even
greater mercy!" This is the
message of Divine Mercy. This is
why so many will gather this
Sunday afternoon at 3 pm to pray
for our world. The liturgy is simple
and will be led by our pastor.
Please join us.

REFLECTION
The description of the young Church as vibrant and
confident in the First Reading is almost the opposite
of the opening scene in today’s Gospel where the
disciples are locked away in fear. They are all afraid
until they see Jesus and are given the gift of his
peace. Poor Thomas missed the big meeting and
wouldn’t take other people’s word for it. Thomas had
a hard time believing that they saw Jesus. Maybe he
had gotten tired of hoping. Maybe his heart was just
too broken by losing Jesus. We can all be like that—
each of us has a “Thomas part” to our personality.
When we’re hurt or feeling left out or when other
people’s faith is stronger than ours, it can be hard to
see God. It can be hard to believe in mercy. It can be
hard to have hope. This Sunday’s readings show us
how the presence of Jesus and the strength drawn
from community helped move those early Christians—
and helps move us—from fear to joy.
ACTION
Jesus may not be appearing in your room but he
does show up in your life. Take some time to name
the people and experiences that make you feel
closest to God. Now engage in some creativity and
turn these observations into a work of art—a picture,
a poem, a song, or written reflection that will remind
you of Jesus’s presence in your life!
JOURNALING QUESTIONS
Put yourself in Thomas’s shoes. Do you think you
would have believed your friends or would you need
proof?
If someone asked you how you know Jesus is risen
what would you say?

DIAPER DRIVE
The words ‘Thank You’ seem inadequate to
express Respect Life Ministry's gratitude for
the generosity of parishioners during our 2015
diaper drive.
We delivered trunk loads filled to capacity to
six pregnancy centers/shelters in Orange and
Los Angeles Counties because the need is so
great. Your continued generosity supports our
ministry and allows us to support the centers
and shelters that continue to reach out to
mothers in crisis. Just imagine the diapers
you donated went to a mother/baby in need.
The blessings of your gifts for the mothers
who chose life is priceless.
40 DAYS FOR LIFE
Children who were scheduled to be aborted
are alive today because over these past 40
days, God blessed your prayers and peaceful
vigil. 402 babies saved from abortion during
this 40 Days for Life campaign the world over.
Thank you for being a witness to hope in a
culture of death!! Please continue to pray for
an end to abortion in our country and around
the world.
RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY MEETING
Wednesday, April 22nd, at 7:00 p.m.
in classroom 7. All are welcome.
Many people are very, very concerned with the
children in India, with the children in Africa
where quite a number die, maybe of malnutrition,
of hunger and so on, but millions are dying
deliberately by the will of the mother. And this is
what is the greatest destroyer of peace today.
Because if a mother can kill her own child —
what is left for me to kill you and you kill me —
there is nothing between.
MOTHER TERESA, Nobel Lecture, Dec 11, 1979
12 APRIL 2015  DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
extraordinarios.
Padre Patricio
ENSEÑANZA CATÓLICA SOBRE
EL SUICIDIO ASISTIDO
Debido a que toda vida es
sagrada, la enseñanza católica
afirma que el suicidio asistido
jamás es permitido.
La eutanasia y el suicidio
asistido van en contra del
entendimiento católico de que
toda vida se caracteriza por ser
imagen de Dios y tener una
Dignidad inherente.
Permitir la muerte vs. matar – El
matar es un acto intencional que
ocasiona la muerte, mientras
que el permitir la muerte es
suprimir o retirar los tratamientos
inútiles u onerosos.
