I would like to share with a personal story to encourage all mothers. I am the eldest of six children and so my parents sometimes asked me to take on responsibilities to lighten their load. I grew up thinking myself as the child who was responsible and pretty well behaved. When I was in my early twenties I visited my maternal grandmother in Abbotsford, British Columbia and she pulled from her closet letters that my mother wrote to her when I was about 5-7 years old. Letter after letter bemoaned my behavior. “I don’t know what I am going to do with Gary; he constantly does the opposite of what I tell him . . . Now runs across the highway to see his cousins without my permission. . . . He teases his sister mercilessly and leaves her in tears day after day.” On and on it went. My illusion of being the model child was dashed! Over time things seemed to work out. That is true in most cases and even for those cases in which children, despite their parents best efforts have struggles well into adulthood, remember the saying I once quoted for you from the movie “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”, “All will be well in the end and if it isn’t well then it isn’t the end.” That saying very much reflects the faith that comes from following Jesus and his pattern of life, death and resurrection. He helps us here with our struggles and in the end their will be not more tears, no more sorrow, death will be no more. Con gratitud hacia mi madre, Lenore Zender, With gratitude to my mother, Lenore Zender, Padre Gary Zender Fr. Gary Zender PD.
