大阪教育大学紀要 第1部 門 第35巻 第1号 15∼24頁 (1986年8月) AmericaとEuropeに お け る"nameless shadowy female"考 察 ほ り け しユ こ 堀 恵 子 大阪 教育 大学 英語 英文 学教 室 (1986年4月10日 William Blakeの 作 品AmericaはOrcを 受 付) 主 人 公 と して 書 か れ, EuropeはEnitharmonを 心 人 物 と し て い る 。 この 二 人 の 影 に 隠 れ て 一 見,重 中 要 で な い よ う に 思 え るが 実 は見 過 し て は な ら な い 女 性 が 一 人 い る 。 そ れ は 両 作 品 の"Preludium"に 登 場 す る"nameless shadowy female"で あ る 。 こ の 小 論 で は 謎 め い た こ の 女 性 に ス ポ ッ トを 当 て,両 作 品 の 中 で 彼 女 の 担 う役 割 は 何 か を考 察 し て み た い と思 う。 タ イ ト ル ペ ー ジ にLambeth,1793と 記 さ れ たAmericaの"Preludium"は 次 の よ う に始 ま る。 The shadowy When fourteen of Urthona suns faintly His food she brought Crowned with "shadowy daughter は,Blakeの had and dark of Urthona"あ of Urthona"と his drink in cups hair the nameless な る と,ま Song abode. of iron. female female"と 呼 ばれ る 女性 が 登 場 す る の す ま す 謎 め い て く る 。 Orcに of Liberty"でnew・born daughter stood-1) い う名 も こ こで 初 め て使 わ れ て い る た of fire"と 呼 ば れ て は い る が に お い て で あ る 。 そ こ で"shadowy red Orc, o'er his dark る い は"nameless and Hellの"A -born wonder""son Urthonaと before れ が 最 初 で あ る 。Urthonaと daughter of Heaven stood journeyed in iron baskets, a helmet 作 品 中,こ め"shadowy Marriage "new daughter ,初 し て も,7劾 terror""new-born fire" め て 名 前 が 与 え ら れ た の はAmerica of Urthona"とOrcの は ど の よ う な 存 在 か を 知 る た め に, Blakeの 誕 生 の 様 子,そ して そ の 後 の 作 品 を 読 む こ とが 必 要 に な っ て く る。 Urthonaは 人 間 の 根 源 的 な 四 つ の 面 を あ ら わ すFour め,imaginationの "shadowy female"の 具 現 で あ り,彼 誕 生 に 関 して は 悔 如 Brought She burst Zoasの"Night の 長 い 会 話 の 後,次 shadow, forth a wonder the gates う ち の 一 人 で,北 pregnant in the deeps beneath, horrible.2) of Enitharmon's heart with 方 位 を 占 い う こ と に な っ て い る 。 ま た, , or the Four UrthonaのSpectreとEnitharmonのShadowと Till Enitharmon's Zoasの の 地 上 で の 姿 がLosと direful crash, the Seventh"で の よ うな記 述 が あ る。 16 堀 恵 子 Nor could they The spectre, ever be closed terrified, gave again;3} her charge over the howling Orc.4} つ ま り 彼 女 はUrthonaのSpectreとEnitharmon(LosのEmanation)のShadowと ま れ,す Orcを さ ま じ い 音 響 と と も にEnitharmonの 保 護 し,監 り 開 い た"wonder horrible"で 督 す る と い う 務 め を 与 え ら れ て い る の で あ る 。 こ の"shadowy Four Zoasの"Night Zoasの の 間 に生 心 臓 を破 the Seventh(b)"に 一 人, Luvah(彼 登 場 し て"l am Vala"5)と の 地 上 で の 姿 がOrc)のEmanation, あ り, female"は, 言 っ て い る こ と か ら, Four ValaのFall後 の 姿 で あ る こ と が 分 る。 一 方Orcの 誕 生 に 関 し て は 次 の よ う な 一 節 がFour The groans Till from of Enitha㎜on her heart In thunder smoke&sullen 生 ま れ た 子 はLuvahとOrc両 shake rending Zoasの"Night the skies, his way the labouring a terrible forth, flames&howling&fury&blood.6) 方 の 名 で 呼 ば れ て い る 。 こ の よ う にOrcはEnitharmonの 異 常 な 愛 情 を い だ き 父 の 殺 害 を企 て て い る と 思 い,嫉 Orcが14歳 心 に な っ た 時,母 親 に 妬 に 駆 られ て 彼 を 鉄 の 山 の 頂 上 に 連 で 縛 り付 け て し ま う の だ 。 後 期 予 言 書 の 中 で,原 初 に は 一 人 で あ っ た 人 間 が 四 人 のZoasに あ るLuvahもEmanationで が,Fall後,二 あ るValaと 分 離 し,'と 人 が 地 上 の 人 間 の 姿 で,と し,Orcと"nameless ludium"な あ る。 earth- child sprang 臓 を 破 っ て 生 ま れ 出 た 恐 ろ し い 子 供 で あ り,父 親 のLosは, れ て ゆ き,鎖 the Fifth"に shadowy female"と も にFallし 分 裂 し,そ の 中 の 一 人 で て ゆ く様 子 が 描 か れ て い る も に 母 の 心 臓 を 裂 く恐 ろ し いwonderと して 誕 生 い う 名 の も と に 再 会 す る の が, Americaの"Pre- の で あ る。 こ こ で 彼 女 は 鉄 の か ご に 食 物 を,鉄 と に 運 ん で く る 。 二 行 目 の"When の 杯 に 飲 物 を 入 れ て,鎖 (p.188)は こ の 時 のOrcの 年 齢 に 言及 し て い る と考 え られ る。 彼 女 が,Four 与 え ら れ た 責 任 を 果 た す た め にOrcの か だ が,こ Zoasで の プ ロ ッ トに,古 たS.Foster Damonが"Red と述 べ て い る よ う に,赤 さ て,頭 に つ な が れ て い るOrcの 代 北 欧 神 話Eddaの 所 へ や っ て きた こ とは 明 ら 影 響 を読 み と る こ と もで き るで あ ろ う。ま eyes are given by Ossian to practically every one of his heroes."7) い 目 を 持 つOrcにOssian的 英 雄 を 重 ね る こ と も可 能 で あ る 。 に か ぶ と を 頂 い た 黒 髪 の"nameless shadowy female"は,腰 に も ま と っ て い る 以 外 は 裸 の 姿 で,夜 の ご と く静 か にOrcの 激 し い 抱 擁 を い ま だ 受 け な い 彼 女 の 鉄 の 舌 か ら は,ま の まわ りに 雲 を幾 重 前 に 立 つ 。 とい う の もOrcの っ た く声 を 発 す る こ とが で き な い か らで あ る。 Silent she stood as night; For never from her iron tongue But dumb も・ fourteen suns had faintly journeyed o'er his dark abode." till that day when could voice or sound arise, Orc assayed his fierce embrace.(p.189) "Nameless Orcは Shadowy 彼 女 に"Dark virgin"と 呼 び か け,自 Female"考 察 17 分 の 身体 は彼 女 の 父親 に よ っ て十 重 の 鎖 で 縛 ら れ て し ま っ た が 精 神 は い よ い よ 高 く舞 い 上 が り,下 は 鎖 に 縛 ら れ て い て も こ の 洞 くつ は 引 き裂 く と 語 る 。 そ し て つ い に 毛 深 い 肩 は 鎖 を 引 き裂 い て,火 は"dark virgin"をrapeす The hairy Round の 手 首 が 自 由 に な っ たOrc る の で あ る。 shoulders rend the terrific the links, loins he seized free are the wrists the panting of fire; struggling womb. to the nether LuvahのEmanationで フ リ カ か ら 無 理 に 引 き 裂 か れ,ア あ るValaのFall後 女 の 皮 膚 が 色 彩 的 に"dark"で BlakeはSongs of Innocenceの"A に お い て も"OAfrican, virgin"の"dark"と 取 に苦 い う言 葉 あ る との 含 み も あ る の で あ ろ う。 Little Black Boy"で,ま を 共 感 を 込 め て 美 し く 歌 っ て い る 。The Marriage black African!(Go, 残 酷 な 奴 隷 制 度 に 対 し てBlakeが の姿 と メ リ カ に 連 れ て こ ら れ て,搾 し む 黒 人 奴 隷 の イ メ ー ジ で も 描 か れ て い る こ と が 分 る 。"dark に は,彼 deep;(p。190) of Heaven winged つ 白 な魂 を持 つ 黒 人 少 年 の 話 and Hellの"A thought, widen Song of Liberty" his forehead!)8)と 歌 い, ひ とか た な ら ぬ 嫌 悪 の 念 を 抱 い て い た こ とが うか が え る。 さ ら に1796年 に 出 版 さ れ たJ.G. against the Revolted from the yearエ772 Joseph Johnsonが V.Erdmanは"Blake's , emphasize Negroes Stedman著 of Surinam, to 1777にBlakeが のANarrative, in Guiana, 少 な く と も16枚 the dignity of Negro れ ら の 彫 版 に か け たBlakeの with a force of expression men and women 情 熱 と,窮 儒'expedition, の彫 版 を し た こ と は知 られ て い る。 こ の 作 品 の た め に 彫 版 を 依 頼 し た の はBlakeだ engravings, of a jive}老 on the Wild Coast of South America; け で は な か っ た が, David absent from stoical under cruel torture."9)と the others, 述 べ て,こ 境 に お か れ た 黒 人 奴 隷 に対 す る共 感 の 念 を 感 じ と って い る。 こ の 作 品 で は,南 れ た 英 国 人Stedmanの 15歳 米 のGuiana植 社 会 的,性 民 地 に お け る 初 期 の 反 乱 奴 隷 と戦 う こ とを余 儀 な くさ 的 ジ レ ン マ が 描 か れ て い る 。Stedmanは の 奴 隷 の 少 女 と 結 婚 式 を 挙 げ も し て い る が,結 奴 隷 解 放 論 者 で, 局 彼 女 の 自 由 を 獲 得 す る こ と は で き ず, 18 堀 恵 子 英 国 に は 一 人 で 帰 国 し て い る の で あ る 。StedmanはBlakeの の 手 紙 を 二 度 送 っ た と記 録 さ れ,Guiana植 す ば ら しい 彫 版 に対 して 感 謝 民 地 で 目 の あ た り に し た 恐 ろ し い 現 実 をBlake に 語 っ た で あ ろ う と さ れ て い る 。Blakeが こ れ ら の 彫 版 の 大 部 分 をJohnsonの し た の が1792年12月1日 で あ る こ と か ら,彼 と1793年12月2日 of AlbionやAmericaの も と に提 出 がVisions of the Daughters 制 作 と 平 行 し て こ れ ら の 彫 版 を し て い た こ とが 分 る 。 さ ら に 議 会 で の 事 態 の 進 行 に 対 す るBlakeの 憤 り が,奴 隷 の イ メー ジ を持 つ 神 話 的 人 物 の こ の 時 点 で の 登 場 背 景 に あ る も の と思 わ れ る 。"The Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade"は1787年 に 発 足 し,す ぐに 証 拠 集 め に か か り,町 援 を 得 た 。 議 会 で の 動 き が 始 ま る の は1789年 ン ス 領Santo Domingoで か ら で,こ の 会 合 を 催 し,芸 れ は フ ラ ン ス 革 命 や1791年 の 奴 隷 の 反 乱 と時 を 同 じ く し て い る 。1792年 売 買 禁 止 を 求 め る 運 動 は 最 高 潮 に 達 す る が,Edmund 人 た ち か ら のAntijacobin攻 Abolition Societyが1792年2月 撃 に よ り,法 術 家 や 作 家 の支 BurkeやLord か ら1793年 の フラ 頃 、 奴隷 Abingdonや 奴隷 仲介 案 は 議 会 で 否 決 さ れ て し ま う の で あ る。 また に 出 し た,イ ギ リ ス 植 民 地 の 黒 人 の 解 放 は 望 ま ず,奴 隷売 買 の 終 結 の み を 求 め る と い う 声 明 は,協 会 本 来 の 人 道 的 立 場 に 反 す る も の で あ り,Blakeを 含 め て 多 く の 奴 隷 解 放 論 者 を 大 い に 失 望 さ せ た も の と思 わ れ る 。 こ の よ う な 状 況 下 で 登 場 し た の がAmericaの"Preludium"で female"な の で あ る 。 さ て こ こ で"nameless shadowy female"は の"nameless shadowy 「ア フ リ カ の 闇 に 住 む 神 の 姿 。 暗 い 死 の 国 で 私 に 生 命 を 授 け よ う と 降 り て き た 方 」 とOrcを 賞 賛 し,も し は し な い と 告 げ て い る 。 そ し て 彼 女 は"On my American plains I feel the struggling afflictions/Endured はや 決 して 彼 を離 by roots that writhe their arms in to the nether deep"(p.190)と メ リ カ に お け る 黒 人 奴 隷 の 苦 闘 を 物 語 る 。 こ こ で 彼 女 は,そ 続 け,ア の苦 役 を通 して ア メ リカ建 国 を 可 能 に し て 表 面 下 で 国 を 支 え て い る 黒 人 奴 隷 の 存 在 を"roots"に た とえ て い る の で あ る。 さ away.(p.190) ル ー,そ し て南 海 諸 島 に お い て も 奴 隷 の 搾 取 が 行 な わ れ て い る こ とを示 して い る。 "Nameless shadowy female"がOrcのrapeを 受 け る と い う場 面 が 先 に あ っ た が,こ 重 要 な 意 味 を 持 っ て い る 。 同 じ よ う にrapeを お い て,OothoonはBromionにrapeさ れ た 後,嘆 ま っ た 。 こ の よ う な お 互 い に 奪 い 合 い,束 female"の 子 宮 は"struggling"し copulation"(p.185)を き 悲 し み,彼 と背 中 合 わ せ に 縛 ら れ て し 縛 し 合 う 関 係 と は 対 照 的 に,"nameless て い る が"panting"で 通 し てOrcは,彼 お け る 革 命 の エ ネ ル ギ ー と し て 彼 本 来 の 力 を発 揮 し,ア 質界 に メ リカや ヨー ロ ッパ に赤 い 炎 の 姿 で 出 現 で き る よ う に な る の で あ る 。 一 方,言 葉 を 発 す る こ と が で き ず,雲 た"nameless shadowy female"も,こ め て ほ ほ え み,雲 う に な っ て い る 。 こ の よ う に 二 人 の 結 び つ き は,お shadowy あ り,「歓 喜 し た 」の で あ る 。こ の"lovely を 縛 っ て い た す べ て の 鎖 か ら 解 き放 さ れ,物 の 後,初 れ は 扱 っ たVisions of the Daughters of Albionに におおわれ てい を 振 り払 い,発 言で きるよ 互 い を 束 縛 か ら 解 放 し合 い,新 しい も の を 生 み 出 し て ゆ く とい う積 極 的 な 関 係 な の で あ る 。 奴 隷 の 一 面 を も つ 彼 女 が 革 命 の 具 現 で あ るOrcと 結 び つ く と,生 み 出 さ れ る もの は解 放 "Nameless を 求 め る 黒 人 奴 隷 の 革 命,反 を 挙 げ た カ ナ ダ,メ Shadowy Female"考 察 乱 で あ ろ う 。 実 際,Erdmanも 19 キ シ コ,ペ ル ー,南 述 べ て い る よ う に, Blakeが 名 海 諸 国 に お いて は黒 人 奴 隷 の 反乱 が起 き て い るの で あ る。 The slave revolts Revolution, described in Stedman's and so did other こ の よ れ,ま す ま す 影 の ご と き 謎 の 女 性 と な っ て い る。 も ち ろ ん黒 人 奴 隷 の 象徴 とし て の 姿 も彼 女 に は 残 され て い る。 そ れ は 次 の 箇 所 に よ くあ らわ れ て い る。 Ah, mother Stamp Enitharmon, not with `Ibring forth from And thou dost And leave me "Thou dost stam solid form this vigorous teeming stamp void them bosom with progeny myriads of丘res! of flame a signet;then s, they roam abroad as death.11} p them with a signet'"は,奴 隷 に焼 印 を押 した と い う 当時 の 習 慣 に 言及 し た も の で あ ろ う 。 何 人 子 供 を 生 ん で も す べ て 焼 印 を 押 さ れ て 遠 くへ 連 れ さ ら れ て し ま う こ と を 嘆 く奴 隷 で あ る 母 親 の 姿 が こ こ に 描 か れ て い る 。 と同 時 に,"howling terros""all-devouring れ て い る彼 女 の 子 供 た ち は,革 fiery kings""myriads of flames"(p。227)と 命 の エ ネ ル ギ ー の 象 徴 で あ るOrcと 呼 ば の 結 合 に よ って 生 み だ さ れ た 奴 隷 反 乱 の 象 徴 で も あ る。 彼 女 の 子 供 た ち が"Surge, foam, and labour into life, first born and first consumed,/Consumed and Consuming!"(p.227)だ 隷 反 乱 が い ず れ も大 変 革 へ の 道 を つ け ら れ な い ま ま,そ と歌 わ れ て い る 部 分 は,奴 の 芽 を摘 み取 られ て し ま った こ と に 言及 して い る ので あ ろ う。 こ の よ う に 彼 女 が 奴 隷 と し て の 一 面 を 持 っ て い る こ と は 確 か で あ る が,そ で き な い 何 か も う 一 つ の 面 を 持 っ て い る よ う で あ る 。Erdmanは 度 重 な る 出 産 に,MiltonのSinの Her"snaky hair"reminds (Plate VIIa)and kings" just pregnancy ま たLeslie の"nameless の 関 係,あ η∼ θ1勉 θ万8Qz`θ6麗 れ だ けで 説 明 こ の 女 性 の"snaky hair"と Iに 登 場 す るUnaとDuessaの Europeの 中 で 書 に お い てWisdom る い はEdmund Spenser 関 係 と 同 一 の もの と し て と ら 20 堀 恵 子 え て い る。13) この よ う に い ろい ろな 解 釈 が 生 まれ て くる ほ ど彼 女 の 存 在 は い よい よ謎 め い て くる わ け だ が,彼 女 の 次 の言 葉 は この謎 を解 く鍵 を に ぎ っ て い る よ う で あ る。 `Omother To Enitha㎜on cause my , wilt thou name to vanish, bring forth that my place 弟 た ち が 次 々 に 生 ま れ る と 自 分 の 名 前 が 消 滅 し,自 other may sons not be found?(p.226) 分 の 場 所 が な くな る とは ど うい う こ と で あ ろ うか 。 こ こ で,Blakeが 彼 女 の 作 品 に 彫 版 を 行 な い,彼 女 を モ デ ル に し た と 思 わ れ る 賞 賛 と 共 感 を 込 め た"Mary"と い う 詩 ま で 残 し て い るMary WollstonecraftのVindication げ of the Rights 防 ㎜ ηの一 節 を引 用 して み た い。 Girls who without bounty -from have been thus any provision, weakly of their brothers,...But being considered さ れ る と い う 当 時 の 状 況 を Wollstonecraftは こ こ で 描 い て い る の で あ る 。 こ こ に 描 か れ た 少 女 た ち の 姿 は,兄 弟 た ち の 中 で 自 分 の 名 前 が 消 滅 し て 自 分 の 場 所 が な く な る と 嘆 い て い る"nameless shadowy female" の 姿 とぴ た り と重 な る。 ま たWollstonecraftは"I cannot help agreeing with the severest satirist, considering the sex as the weakest as well as the most oppressed half of the species."15)と 述 べ,さ ら に次 の よ う に も語 っ て い る 。 It き女 性 た ち で あ っ て,よ ほ ど並 は ず れ たunderstandingsを 持 っ て い な い か ぎ り,卑 しむ べ き人 間 の よ うに扱 わ れ て 結 局 は そ の よ うな人 間 に な っ て し "Nameless Shadowy Female"考 察 21 ま う と 言 っ て い る の だ 。 こ の よ う に し て 立 派 な 女 性 の 多 くが,能 ず,不 満 の う ち に 一 生 を 終 え ざ る を え な い とい う現 実 を,彼 こ こ で,Blakeがshadowと る だ ろ う。7初 い う言 葉 を どの よ うな 意 味 で 用 い て い るか に ふ れ る必 要 が あ 漁 桝"age of Heaven and Hellに And being restrained till it is only 力 も能 力 や 野 心 を そ な え 迫 を 受 け て,結 局 は 願 望 の 残 り か す の よ う な 状 態 で 一 生 を終 え た 数 多 くの 女 性 の 姿 で は な い だ ろ う か 。 また"shadowy female"は な ぜnamelessな の で あ ろ う か 。 当 時 の 英 国 の 法 律 で は,女 性 が 結 婚 前 に 所 有 し て い た
