Under the guidance of Lokeśvararàja Buddha,”
(Opening passage from the Shoshinge, Japanese and English translation)
Hard to believe that the month of May is upon us.
Later this month, we will be helping host the 15th World
Buddhist Women’s Convention in Calgary, Alberta. As one
of the members of the organizing committee I have been
kept busy with ongoing correspondence with the Hongwanji
in Japan, with coordinating the translation of the three
official languages for the convention ( Japanese, English
and Portuguese), as well as preparing for the services
associated with the convention. The previous month,
we hosted the JSBTC National AGM in Steveston. This
involved coordinating as well as the volunteering by so many at our temple.
It has been a very busy period.
Of course, while all of this is going on, there are the regular temple
responsibilities that also have to be carried out. One of the regular temple
functions is the monthly services that we conduct at a couple of Senior
Citizen Homes. Every month, I have been taking turns with Aoki Sensei
of the Vancouver Temple to visit and hold services at the Nikkei Home.
This past month, it was my turn to go and conduct the service. I called
my mother the night before to see if she wanted to join me for the visit
and together, the two of us went for the service. Because the traffic was
unusually light, we ended up arriving at the Nikkei Home about 20 minutes
early. As we entered the building, in the front lobby, we met a member of
the Steveston Temple who happens to live at the facility. After saying our
hellos, I invited Mrs. M. to join us for the service. When we got to the room
where the services are held, my mother and Mrs. M. began chatting while
waiting for the service to start. Mrs. M. had been diagnosed with dementia
a number of years ago and every time I go and visit the Nikkei Home, she
repeats what she says over and over again. Of course I would listen to
her politely every time, but would also not really listen to her talk with any
seriousness citing her dementia for making her repeat the same thing over
and over again. So I was a little surprised this time when Mrs. M. and
my mother struck up their conversation. Unlike all the other times, Mrs. M.
started talking about her past, more specifically, her childhood. She said she
remembers being taken regularly to the Buddhist Church by her parents and
that she even remembers the Sutra Chanting. Without hesitation, she started
chanting the above verse. It is the first passage in the chant the Shoshinge,
written by Shinran Shonin, the founder of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.
I was both surprised and embarrassed. Surprised because Mrs. M. was
reciting
what is said to be the core chanting of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism,
FUJINKAI TOBAN #1 and embarrassed
because somewhere inside myself, I was not truly listening
to her thinking she doesn’t know what she is talking about because of her
dementia. One might say she was able to remember the chanting because

it is something she learned as a child, but to remember the difficult

passages of the Sutra Chanting takes a lot more than just remembering
something from childhood. I realized that these words of truth just came
out naturally from Mrs. M.
Mrs. M. became my wonderful Nembutsu teacher, showing me the
shallowness of my rational mind as well as the great working of Amida

will take over the tasks.
2015 World Women’s Buddhist Convention
in Calgary will be attended by several of our
Fujinkai members whose attendance will be
subsidized to offset a part of their expenses.
This has been done for those attending
previous conventions and was approved at
our January AGM.
Total of approximately 67 bags as part
of the Cash for Clothes drive for the
Developmental Disabilities Association have
been gathered so far.
Our goal is 151
bags to achieve $3 per bags. Any less
will be $2 per bag so please dig deep into
your closets. Do not put into the donation
bin in the parking lot as these will not be
counted. Thanks!
Garage Sale is set for Saturday, June
27 starting at 9 am. Help is needed to
clean and price items on Friday, June 26.
And also help to sell and man the tables.
Most importantly, we need your unwanted
belongings and treasures. Amusing incident
at last year’s garage sale: there was a
young Asian lady (a stranger) who manned
a table for us and helped us sell. She also
purchased a box of stuff before she left.
Most had assumed that she was a friend of
one of us. Garage sales are always fun
and a good way of meeting the community.
