LIGHT OF THE DHARMA
The Karma of Our Past
REGULAR EVENTS:
With the air feeling definitely cooler and the completion of
another very successful bazaar, we are well into the fall as we
enter the month of November.
November is the month in which we traditionally commemorate

So, how does the Karma from our past affect our future? The Buddhist
definition of Karma is “Action with volition”. It is usually broken down into three
forms, the thought, the speech, and our bodily action. From the beginning of the
Buddhist religion, Sakyamuni Buddha instructed his disciples to go and spread
the Dharma. Before they could do so, however, first the disciples must have

had the desire to attain enlightenment themselves. This is known as the Bodhi

teachings of the Buddha and want to share it with others and this was expressed

Report on the British Columbia
Buddhist Women’s League AGM on
Sunday, Sept. 20.
The meeting was chaired
capably by Amy Nagamatsu with
representatives from the various
chapters in B.C. It was an ideal
opportunity for the members of the
Steveston Fujinkai to attend and extend a warm welcome
to the delegates. The executive remains as: President,
Misaye Hamaura (Steveston); Vice President,
Amy
Nagamatsu (Fraser Valley); Secretary, Kari Natsuhara
(Vernon) and Treasurer, Jeanne Ryan (Steveston).
Semi annual AGM of SBT WA was held on the following
Sunday, Sept. 27. Mandy Ling from the Richmond Hospital
Foundation gave a brief presentation on the needs of
our local hospital and thanked us for past donations.
This will be discussed in the next AGM as a donation
to Calgary Buddhist Temple and subsidy for tokudo
training were more immediate. $2000 will be given to the
Calgary Buddhist Temple which has undergone extensive
renovations. $1000 from the November Eshinni nikko and
Fujinkai memorial service will be given as a subsidy to
Naoki Hirano who was given his tokudo ordination in May.
Please keep in mind our Craft Fair on Saturday, Nov.
21 from 10 am to 3 pm. On sale also will be Japanese
collectibles, any donated crafts and baking.

The purpose of the special general meeting was to
officially inform the temple members of the senior housing
project that the 20/20 committee has been examining
for the site behind the temple. This proposal was first
introduced at this year’s Obon Festival in July. After the
presentation of the preliminary schematics, the meeting
was opened to questions from the members.
The questions and concerns were as follows;
- What will be the level of care?
- Will the members get priority to live at this project?
- What will the food be like?
- The Japanese focus does not feel inclusive to nonJapanese spouses.
- Where will the funding to build this project come from?
In responding to the concerns above it was explained
that the project was in the early planning stage and levels
of care has not been determined yet. The design process as
we proceed will be examining the needs for independent,
assisted and dementia care for the community. Similarly
who will get to live here has not yet been established.
It should be noted that this is a temple project and the
seniors’ housing is for the benefit of the members and
the local community. The type of food for this seniors’
development will be part of the operations and will be
determined later. With regard to feelings of inclusiveness
to the non-Japanese, the objective at this stage in the
development is to be open to the community and to all with
sensitivity to the Japanese culture. There is to be no cost
to the members to build this project. The financing will be
through B C Housing with grants from CHMC.
FALL FOOD
BAZAAR
October 18, 2015
Once again, the Temple held a
successful fall bazaar with lots of
delicious food, volunteers, customers
and sales. The bazaar lasted only two
hours but there were many hours of preparation. Thank
you to the members and volunteers who came out to
plan and organize, go shopping, prepare the food, set up
the gym, to sell and serve the food and to clean up. A
number of new and younger volunteers in our midst were
noticeable. Thank you. Everyone were kept busy until the
doors opened at noon.
The line up outside the gym doors was long but hopefully
everyone were able to pick up the food which they wanted:
sushi, chow mein, teriyaki chicken combo, udon, manju
and home baking.
Dharma School had baking and drinks. In the lobby the
Baiten and Japanese groceries were sold and did very
well in the new location.
Thank you to everyone who came out to buy the food
and for supporting the temple. This was a wonderful event
with the community coming to eat and buy Japanese food,
meet old friends and make new friends
After the questions a motion was introduced as follows:
“That the Board and the 20/20 Committee develop
detailed plans for a senior residence at the Steveston
Buddhist Temple site” - moved by Roy Akune and
seconded by Suezone Chow.
The vote was by show of hands of temple members and
those who submitted their vote by email or by mail-out
were asked to not vote. The results were as follows;
- Hands shown were 41 in favour, none against and no
abstentions.
- Email and mail-out responses were 56 in favour and
4 against.
- Resulting final count was
97 in favour, 4 against
and no abstentions.
VISION
The motion passed and
the meeting was adjourned.

Bowlathon Fundraiser
Lectures and Classes
Our Temple Fall activities are in full swing with lectures,
meditation, and other recreational classes. The following
is a listing of the various classes being offered. Why not
join us for a class you may find interest in.
Please join us for a fun-filled evening of bowling, competition, socializing, food, drink, prizes and more.
Religious Programs
Enter as a team of 5 players or as an individual.
• Seiza Meditation sessions are still strong every
Thursday evenings at 7:30 pm as well as on Friday
mornings at 10:30 am. No experience is needed and
you will find it most calming and enjoyable.
• In addition to the Friday morning Seiza meditation,
on Friday mornings from 11:00 am Rev. Ikuta will
be leading an hour session in chanting the Triple
Pure Land Sutra in English. We will be using the
format established by the Kelowna Buddhist Temple.
The actual reading of the Pure Land Sutras is most
informative and will deepen one’s understanding of
Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.
• The BDK DVD series presentation continues on every
other Tuesday evenings (7:30 pm) Although the DVD
is a series, each episode is made so that one does not
have to view the previous episodes. Please join us for
this presentation and enjoy the lively discussion we
have based on the DVDs.

Recreational Programs
• Yoga classes – a new yoga class has been started
up by Ms. Alanna McConnell. Classes on Mondays
and Thursdays are pretty well filled up but there is
still room in the Saturday morning drop in chair Yoga
program starting at 9:30 am. The Chair Yoga is easy
for anyone to do and all are welcome to join. Why not
come out and give it a try.
• Bud Sakamoto’s Art classes have also started up on
Wednesday evenings. Everyone is welcome to join
this class as well. Please see Bud if you are interested
in learning how to paint.

On Oct. 15th, we watched a movie “Ohayo ” starring
Keiji Sada,Yoshiko Kuga, Chishû Ryû and Kuniko Miyake
by Yasujiro Ozu from 1959. It was a very humble morning
to watch a movie from the late 50’s. After the movie, we
enjoyed our tea and homemade chocolate pastries baked
by Sachiko san and discussed how busy, aggressive and
materialistic we have become since then. I thank you all
for coming and baking. Next Moe No Kai will be held on
Thursday, Nov. 19th at 10 am. Please bring an apron,
a medium sized jar and few colourful autumn leaves in
various sizes if possible. We will have an autumn craft
morning. Please stay healthy and see you again on
Thursday, Nov. 19th.
Bodhi Day Service commemorating the Enlightenment
of Sakyamuni Buddha will be held at 10:30 am. Why not
make a day of it and come attend the service and stay for
the Bonenkai Party to enjoy the fellowship of Sangha.

２０１５年１０月４日に開催
The temple is looking for helpers
to make mochi for the Bonenkai
party. We will be pounding 80 lbs
of Mochi on Saturday, Dec. 12th
from 9:00 am. Rice washing will
take place the day before on Friday. If you are able to
help on either date it would be appreciated. Mochi making
has been a long time tradition carried on by a group of
dedicated Fujinkai ladies. However, the time has finally
come for some of the younger generation to receive the
baton and carry on with this tradition. If you are able to
spare some time on Saturday morning and would like to
have some fun, please contact Rev. Grant and let him
know you will be able to help out.

式にご報告することにありました。この提案は今年のお盆祭
りの際、初めて皆様にご紹介されました。建設予定図のご紹
介も含めたこのプレゼンテーション後、今回の総会は会員の
皆様からの質問をお受けする場として開かれました。
総会では以下のようなご質問、気がかりになっていることを
伺いました。
-どれくらいのレベルの介護を受けれるのか？
-仏教会の会員は、優先的にこの施設に入ることができる
のか？
-提供される食事はどのようなものになるのか？
-日系人に焦点をあてた施設になると、入居者の伴侶が日
本人ではない場合どうなるのか？
-このプロジェクトにかかる資金はどのように集めるの
か？
この質問などに対し、委員会からはこのように説明があり
ました。
このプロジェクトはまだ初期段階にあり、介護レベルまだ決
定されておらず、設計過程を進めるにあたり、周辺地域での
自活型、介護型、認知症介護の必要性を調査します。同様の
理由で、どのような入居者を募集するかはまだわかっていま
せん。しかしこれは当仏教会のプロジェクトであり、シニア
ハウジングは仏教会の会員様達と地域社会の利益のためのも
のです。提供される食事についても、運営に関することにな
りますので、まだ決定されていません。また、この計画は現
段階で、会員でない方や、日本的な趣向を持たれている方な
ど、どなたでも入居していただこうと考えています。この施
設を建設するにあたり、会員の皆様が負担される費用は
そして以下のような動議が提案されました：
「役員会と２０／２０員会は、今後スティーブストン仏教会
においてのシニアハウジング建築の詳細な計画を推し進める
こととする」　－ロイ・阿久根氏より提議され、スゾーネ・

チョウ氏によって賛成されました。
投票は、事前にメールと郵送にて受け付けていた票と、会場
にいた仏教会会員達の挙手によって行われましたが、その他
の方々には投票をお断りしました。結果は次の通りです。
-挙手による投票では賛成に４１票、反対、並びに棄権は
０でした。
-メールと郵送で受け付けていた投票では、賛成に５６
票、反対に４票でした。
-結果、賛成が９７票、反対が４票、棄権は０でした。
動議は可決され、総会は閉会されました。

法のともしび
萌の会　秋のフードバザー
１０月１８日（日）
今年も秋のフードバザーでは、ボランティアの皆様のお陰
で、多くのお客様にお寺自慢の日本食をたくさん購入して
いただくことができました。バザー自体は２時間ですが、
その準備には何時間もかかっています。プランからオーガ
ナイズ、そして買い出し、調理、会場セットアップ、販
売、配膳、後片付けなどをお手伝いくださった会員の皆
様、ボランティアの皆様、本当にどうもありがとうござい
ました。今回は初めてお手伝いに来てくださった若い世代
の方々もいらっしゃいました。どうもありがとうございま
した。正午に開場されるまで、皆さん本当に忙しく働いて
いらっしゃいました。
開場を待つお客様の列が長かったので、お客様皆さんがお
目当ての商品を買っていただけたか心配になるほどでし
た。寿司、チャーメン、照り焼きチキンコンボ、うどん、
饅頭そしてホームメードのベーキングなどが販売されまし
た。日曜学校はベーキングと飲み物を販売しました。今回
から売店を本堂前のロビーにうつしましたが、日本の置物
や食器、日本食品が販売され、売れ行きが良かったようで
す。
また、バザーに足を運んでくださり、お寺をサポートする
為にお買い上げくださった皆様、どうもありがとうござい
ました。地域の方々がお寺に日本食を買いにいらして、古
いお友達と再会したり、新しいお友達を作ったりと、素晴
らしいイベントになりました。

１０月１５日の萌の会は小津安二郎監督名作映画集の中の
“お早よう”を観賞しました。
佐田啓二、久我美子、笠智衆、三宅邦子、その他出演の１９
５９年の傑作品でした。
この様な５０年代の映画を観賞するには、もっての他のとて
も穏やかな朝でした。観賞後は、
お茶と幸子さんのホームベーキングのチョコレートのお菓子
は頂きながら、現代の世の中がいかに慌しく、物騒で物質的
になってしまったかを語り合いました。皆さん、幸子さん、
とても
楽しい一時を過ごせました。有難うございました。次回の萌
の会は、１１月１９日(木)
午前１０時からです。エプロン、ジャムなどのビン、できれ
ば紅葉された落ち葉各種を少々お持ち下さいませ。秋のクラ
フトをしましょう。どうぞ、カゼなど引かず健康でいてくだ
さい。次回１１月１９日にお会いしましょう。

日曜学校
日曜学校では9月13日にパンケーキ・ブランチがありまし
た。とてもおいしかったです。ボランティアの皆さん、どう
もありがとうございました。子供達も大いに楽しんだようで
す。
10月25日には恒例のハロウィーン・パーティーがありま
す。コスチュームがあればそれを着て参加して下さいね。

会長からのお知らせ
お寺は心が暖まる癒しの場
坂本バッド
スティーブストン仏教会の役員達は、献身的
なボランティア達によって成り立っていま
す。お寺の会員様達と同じように、役員達の
高齢化も進んでいます。現在過半数以上（６
５％）の役員達は７０歳以上です。５年以内には現在の役員
達の半数以上が８０歳以上となることでしょう。
将来もこの運営体制を維持するためには、若い世代の会員達
の参加が不可欠となります。若い世代のニーズに応え、日々
変わりつつあるテクノロジーを使ったコミュニケーションを
とるためにも、世の中の変化に関わっている人々の助けが必
要です。
どうしたらこのような若い世代の方々に役員となってもらえ
るのでしょう？これはとても難しい課題であり、皆さんのご
協力のもと、どのようにこの問題を解決するか思案し、話し
合っていく必要があります。

９月２０日（日）開催「ブリティッ
シュ・コロンビア州仏教会婦人会年
次総会」のご報告
年次総会は議長エイミー・ナガマツ
さんを初め、ＢＣ州の多数の支部か
らの代表者達でとり行われました。スティーブストン仏教会
の婦人会メンバーにとっては、総会に出席し、それに加えて
代表者の皆様を温かくお迎えできるという理想的な形をとる
ことができました。存続する役員達は以下の通りです。会
長：ミサエ・ハマウラさん（スティーブストン）、副会長：
エイミー・ナガマツさん（フレイザーバレー）、秘書：カ
リ・ナツハラさん（バーノン）、会計：ジーン・ライアンさ
ん（スティーブストン）。
スティーブストン仏教会婦人会、下半期総会は翌週の９月２
７日（日）に行われました。リッチモンドホスピタル財団の
マンディー・リングさんが、これまでの婦人会からの寄付へ
の感謝を述べ、これから地元の病院で何が必要とされるかを
簡単に説明してくださいました。
このことについては次回の総会にて、早急に対処が必要なカ
ルガリー仏教会への寄付や、得度修礼への補助金と併せて話
し合われます。大幅な改造が行われているカルガリー仏教会
へは２０００ドルが送られます。１１月の恵信尼公と婦人会
先亡者追悼法要からの１０００ドルは、得度を受ける平野直
樹さんへ補助金となります。
今年のクラフトフェアは１１月２１日（土）午前１０時から
午後３時です。仏教会からは日本の伝統的な収集品、皆様か
らご寄付いただくクラフト、ベーキングなどを販売する予定
です。どうぞご協力のほど、よろしくお願いいたします。

空気もしっかりと寒くな
り、秋の色染めと同時にカレンダーの日付が11
月となりました。皆さんいかがお過ごしでしょ
うか？これからは気温も寒くなり、また雨の日
も増える時期に入りますので、風邪をひかない
ように要注意することを念じ申し上げます。
さて、今月の記事に参りましょう。先日家族
と中華料理を食べに行った時の出来事でした。
隣のテーブルに中国系のカップルが座っていま
した。女性は20代の後半で男性はもう少し年
上の方だったように見えました。二人は大変お
しゃれな恰好をしていました。最初に特に気が
付いた理由は、たった二人なのに店で一番高い
アラスカンキングクラブ（カニ）を注文してい
たからでした。私たちはどんなに多く集まって
も、アラスカンキングクラブは高すぎて一度も
食べたことはありませんですが、隣の客は何気
なく注文していました。やっぱり金持ちがする
ことは違うなと思いました。

最初はちらっとしか見ていなかったのです
が、彼女たちのことがだんだん気になるようになりました。
二人が料理を注文した後、お互いに持っていた携帯電話（ス
マートフォン）を持ち出して、それから食事が終わるまで自
分の電話の画面にへばり付いていたからです。おいしそうな
カニ料理が出てきても頭も上げずに電話を見ながらカニを食
べていました。そして、まだ半分以上も残したまま二人は立
ち上がり、女性の方が$100冊を何枚か出してテーブルにポ
ーンと投げつけて、店から出ていきました。普段周りの人を
観察しないようにはしていますが、この二人の行動はあまり
のものだったので、どうしても目が離せませんでした。どん
なに物質的に裕福であろうとしてもなんと空しいなと思いま
した。一生懸命に店で働いている定員さんをはじめに、料理
のために命を犠牲となったカニや他の料理に使った材料の命
がかわいそうでした。
そこで、今記事に引用された「本願力にあいぬれば、空し
くすぐる人ぞなき」の文を思い浮かんだのです。親鸞聖人は
阿弥陀様の本願の働きに出会われた者は「生かされている
命、そしてともに生きている命」に気づかせて、お念仏の喜
びがわいてくると示していただいた文書だと思います。尊い
命のつながりに気づかせてくださる阿弥陀様の働きであるか
ら空しくすぐることがなくなるのです。また、その働きに出
会う場所としてお寺の存在があります。皆さんもお寺にきて
気持ちが落ち着いたり、喜びを感じたりすることは、同じ人
生価値観を持つ法友に会えるからではないでしょうか？お寺
が癒しの空間であるのも、建物がどうこうではなくて、そ
の建物の中で伝わっているお念仏の教えがあるからだと思
います。
お寺が聞法の場であり、お念
仏を喜ぶ場でもある尊い存在だ
なと改めて思うようになる出来
事でした。ひょっとしたら、あ
の中国系のカップルは私を導い
てくださる菩薩であったかも…
少なくても今月の記事を書く上
の重要参考人でありました。
