With the calendar page being flipped over from
January to February, 2015 is well under way.
February is the month that we observe the Nirvana
Day Service remembering the date that the historical
Buddha, Sakyamuni, passed away and entered what
is known as Parinirvana, or “Perfect Enlightenment”.
According to scholars, it is generally accepted
that Sakyamuni Buddha passed away on February
15th, the exact year is in question, but is believed
to be about 25 centuries ago, or 2500 years ago.
According to the Sutras, in his eightieth year, the
Buddha became ill in a place called Vaisali and
predicted that after three months he would enter
Parinirvana. It is said that he became critically ill
by partaking food offered by a blacksmith named
Cunda, and in the Sala grove just outside of
Kusinagara, he had his bedding spread between two
sala trees with his head towards the north and his
face facing the West passing away very gently. I
had the opportunity to go there in the year 2000
with 20 others from across Canada as we went
on a pilgrimage visiting the sites associated with
the historical Buddha. At Kusinagara, there is a
stupa, or a large mound where it was said that
the cremation of the Buddha took place. It is there
that the Buddha was to have said the introductory
passage for this month’s article.
What was the Buddha trying to tell his disciples
when he said “Make yourself a light. Rely upon
yourself: do not depend upon anyone else. Make
my teachings your light. Rely upon them: do not
depend upon other teachings”. If we examine the
second half first, he is saying to let the teachings
be our light. In the case of the Nembutsu teachings,
it is through listening to the teachings that we hear
the calling voice of Amida Buddha telling us that
we are within the embrace of Great Compassion,
just as we are.

The question arises as to what happens once we
receive the Great Compassion of Amida Buddha. It is
here that the first half of the introductory passage to
this article that becomes critical. When the Buddha said,
“Let yourself be the light” he is telling his followers that
it is important to share the experience of the Dharma
with others. Just as the light source emits energy to its
surroundings, one who rejoices in the Dharma should
share it with others.
As we observe the Nirvana Day service in February,
I hope we can rejoice in and share the wonderful
teachings that we are able to encounter.

With this first newsletter of the year I
would like to begin by wishing everyone a
Happy and Healthy New Year.
At the beginning of each year the
temple is obligated to hold an Annual
General Meeting (AGM) for the operations
of the temple. At the AGM the Board
of Directors must report the finances for
past year (2014), reports on programs
and general operations and budget for the
coming year (2015).
At the upcoming AGM on Sunday, February 22nd,
2015 the board will be presenting an update on the
20/20 Vision planning for the temple.
We would
like to have an open discussion and feedback on the
committee’s work to date. Similar to many churches
in the lower mainland with strategic land holdings, the
Steveston Buddhist Temple needs to examine future
needs and plan for the best land use.
To all temple members, please attend the AGM to
assist the 20/20 Committee prepare a plan that will
reflect the needs of the temple.

For January, we watched one of the “Otoko wa
Tsuraiyo” Tora-san series. In the movie, there was
a scene where Tora-san sees his natural mother. At
first they could not accept each other, which was
heart-breaking. However, at the end, they established
a happy mother-son relationship and ended the story
happily. The next Moe-no-Kai will be on Feb. 19.
As it will be still cold, please take care of yourselves.

doing well. A new rotation of tobans will commence on
February 1 after our AGM on January 25.
Our annual Dana Day service will be held on Sunday,
February 8 at 10:30 am. Donations received at this
service is forwarded annually to the JSBTC Women’s
Federation to benefit social causes in Canada and also
internationally. All members are encouraged to attend
this service.

The mark up is minimal.
Purpose is to
benefit members and friends with lower prices and to
give some revenue to the Temple so it is hoped that
sales will increase in 2015.

The 20/20 Committee met
with both Terra Housing and
TLHousing (part of Townline)
before the Winter break. We
asked these two groups, as
well as our previous consultant
to give us proposals on how
they feel we should proceed.
We will get proposals back in the first week of
February, and will evaluate and compare them before
the next board meeting.
The 20/20 Committee will then present a motion to
the board and at the AGM, for the Temple to partner
with one of the three groups to further develop our
project. Once we have committed to a partner, we can
create the project and present it to the members of the
Temple, before we start the actual building process.
It will be a busy year ahead, but it will be exciting
to watch the plans take shape.

CONTEMPORARY WORLD
The Steveston Buddhist Temple
is honored to announce a special
lecture by the prominent Pure
Land Scholar, Prof. Chiko Naito on
Saturday, February 28th from 2:00
pm – 5:00 pm.
Prof. Naito is one of the leading
doctrinal authorities of Jodo Shinshu
Buddhism and will be sharing some
of the core teachings of Shinran
Shonin, the founder of Jodo Shinshu
Tradition. Through his talk, Prof.
Naito will express how this teaching can be the foundation
for finding true inner peace within this contemporary and
conflicting society that we live in. The lecture will be
presented in Japanese with English interpretation provided
by the resident minister of the Steveston Buddhist Temple,
Rev. Grant Ikuta.
The seminar is free and open to the public, however,
we would like to ask those interested in attending to
register so the temple may have some ideas on how
many people will be attending. To register, please

This seminar is being presented through the sponsorship
of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada and
the Living Dharma Centre.
UPCOMING SEMINARS
Terry Beresford volunteered to look after the temple
rentals after the resignation of Larry Ryan and Jack
Kawabata from the Rental Committee. Appreciation is
extended to Larry and Jack for their work in obtaining
revenue for the Temple. And thanks also to Terry for
his quick response to the vacancy.
Any donations in form of a cheque to the Jodo
Shinshu Buddhist Temple of Canada (JSBTC) should
be made out directly to JSBTC and not to the Steveston
Buddhist Temple. It is then easier to comply with the
Revenue Canada regulations removing the need to fill
out forms.
20/20 Vision report will be presented at the Steveston
Buddhist Temple AGM on Sunday, February 22nd.
The committee members have been busy meeting with
various experts and visiting senior facilities in the past
several months.
Wednesday, Feb. 4 will be a free chow mein night
for the Bingo players.
Developmental Disabilities Association donation box will
be put on the temple premises on a trial basis. This
is intended for the public. Fujinkai will still accept any
clothing, household items, etc. from the temple members
but will not have to wait until 100 or 150 bags are
collected for pickup. This should ease the congestion
in the kitchen and solve the lack of storage. Please
continue to bring your bags to the Temple so DDA can
see the amount donated by the public. There will still
be some income from the DDA.
With the start of 2015, no food scraps are allowed
in the garbage. There is a phase in period but the
temple members will need to separate any food from
the garbage to be picked up. Labeled containers will
be placed in the kitchen for the food scraps including
vegetables, fruit, coffee grounds and tea bags. These
can be taken to the lawn cuttings bin in the back, taken
home or occasionally placed in the manse green bin
(Sensei has agreed). Let’s do our best!
Starting Tuesday, February 10th and continuing on
for every other Tuesday (February 24, March 10 &
March 24). Rev. Ikuta will be showing the DVD series
“Mutually Sustaining Life – A Buddhist Call to a Troubled
World”. This is a series produced by the BDK Society
and is narrated by Rev. Prof. Ken Tanaka, author of the
Introductory Jodo Shinshu Book Oceans. Every session
will begin by watching one or two episodes (each
episode is only about 15 minutes long) of the DVD

20/20委員会のニュース
20/20委員会は冬の休暇前にテラハウジングとTLハウジン
グ（タウンラインの一部）と会合を持った。これらの二つ
のグループと以前のコンサルタントに我々がどのように開
発を進めるべきか提案を出すように要請した。
2月の第1週に上記の三つの提案を受け取り、次の役員会の
前に委員会が提案を比較検討する。
20/20委員会はその次に上記3つのグループの一つを選び、
その提案に基づいて我々のプロジェクトを推進するという
動議を役員会とAGMに出す。いったんグループを選んだ
ら、実際に建設を始め
る前に、プロジェクト
を企画し、お寺の会員
に発表する。
今年はこの先忙しくな
るだろうが、プロジェ
クトが目に見える形で
進行していくのを見る
のは興奮するであろう。

明けましておめでとうございます。今年も幸せで健康であり
ますように。当番3は1月の終わりで任期が終了します。秋
の食品バザー、手芸品バザー、お寺のリトリート、そして報
恩講等を当番3の方達が立派にこなしてくださり感謝してい

か。当番の新しい順番は1月25日の総会後、2月1日から始ま
ります。
毎年恒例のダーナデー法要が2月8日(日)の10:30からありま
す。ダーナデー法要の寄付はカナダや世界の社会的問題解決
のために毎年カナダ浄土真宗仏教婦人会に回されます。皆様
どうぞこの法要にご参加ください。
当仏教会に於いて２月２８日（土）午
後２時より浄土真宗本願寺派勧学、内
藤知康師の特別講演会を開催いたし
ます。
内藤先生は念仏のみ教えがどのように

ついて語られます。講演会は日本語で
行われ、生田開教使による英語通訳付

親子の御縁
会長からのお知らせ

今年の最初のニュースレターを出すに当た
り、皆様の新年のお幸せとご健康をお祈りい
たします。
年の初めにはお寺の運営に関して年次総会
(AGM)を開かないといけません。AGMでは
理事が2014年の会計報告をし、2015年のプ
ログラム、全般的な運営、さらに予算につい
ての報告があります。
2015年2月22日(日)のAGMでは役員がお寺の20/20ビジョ
ン計画について最新情報をお伝えします。皆で自由な議論を
し、様々なご意見を出して下さい。ローアー・メインランド
にある土地を持った多くの教会と同じように、スティーブス
トン仏教会も土地の有効利用のため将来の必要性と計画を吟
味する必要があります。
20/20委員会がお寺の必要性を反映する計画を立てられるよ
うに、会員の皆様がAGMに出席されるよう強くお願いいた
します。

1月の萌の会は寅さんシリーズの映画を見ました。寅さんが
生みの親に会うシーンがあり、それが最初はうまくいかなく
て胸が痛みました。後ではもちろん暖かい親子関係で映画が
終わりました。2月の萌の会は19日です。まだ寒い日が続き
ますのでお体をお大事にしください。それでは来月またお会
いしましょう。

ことによって母（父）であるこ
とを自覚し、母（父）の心に触
れて子の心が安らかとなるよう
なものである。

１月を迎えたばかりと思えば、早くも２月とな
りました。さて、先月報恩講に特別講師にカリ
フォルニア州・サンマテオ仏教会のヘンリーア
ダムス師をお招きしました。報恩講の行事の合
間にアダムス先生と話していた時に、彼は今い
るお寺が忙しくて家族と過ごす時間があまりな
いとつぶやいていました。それを聞いた時、ふ
とトロントに住んでいた頃を思い出しました。
トロントではこちらと違って自宅がお寺のすぐ
横ではなく、車で約３０分離れた所にありまし
た。時には冬に大雪が降りお寺から家まで２時
間以上もかかったこともありました。そういう
ある日の出来事でした。お寺で夜にミーティン
グがあったために夕食の後お寺に戻ろうとした
時、三歳であった二男の真悟がいきなり「パパ
もう帰るの？」といいました。苦笑いをしながらちょっとシ
ョックを受けたことをアダムス先生の話を聞きながら懐かし
く思い出しました。
あれから１７年もたった今は息子も大学生になり、
プリンスジョージにある大学で勉強しています。なかなか家
に帰ってこられない息子がたまに帰ってくると思うと、数日
したらすぐプリンスジョージに戻らなければならないと言
い、私が「もう帰るの？」と逆の立場になりました。
そんな親子の関係を考えると上記の引用文を思い浮
かびました。子どもがいるからこそ私は父親の自覚があり、
また親がいるから安心して暮らしていける息子がいるのでは
ないかと思いました。
お念仏のみ教えを聞きながら、阿弥陀様と私の関係
を考えさせる出来事でした。
