The Birth of the Enlightened One
REPEAT EVENTS:
BINGO:
‘The heavens filled with light and the devas (gods), showered
flowers on the young Prince Siddhartha who descended from

FUJINKAI TOBAN #1
An old sage, Asita, prophesied that the prince, would
become a world renouncer if he ever encountered
suffering. To ward off this possibility, King Suddhodana ensconced the prince in the royal luxuries of his
palace at Kapilavastu, but to no avail. Destiny took
its course and Prince Siddhartha renounced his royal
heritage and set off on the course to find a solution
to end human misery.’ (From the book Walking With
the Buddha)
Thus the accounts of the birth of the Buddha
have been passed down from century to century. It
is usually during this month of April (April 5th this
year at our temple) that the birth is celebrated in
our tradition.
As we celebrate the auspicious occasion, it is
interesting to note that the Buddha himself taught
that one of the four great sufferings in life is birth.
The Buddha’s first teaching is well known as the
Four Noble Truths, of which, the first is known as
the Truth of Suffering. It states that in life there
is inevitably suffering of which the Four Great
Sufferings are: birth, old age, sickness, and death.
Without going into the details, the First Noble Truth
is the Truth of Suffering, the Second Noble Truth is
the Truth of Causation of Suffering, the Third being
the Truth of Cessation of Suffering, and the final
Truth is the Truth of the Path to the Cessation of
Suffering, also known as the Noble Eightfold Path.
When we look at the opening passage of this
article, it is written that the old sage, Asita,
prophesized that the prince would become a world
renouncer if he encountered suffering. To prevent
this from happening, (see “Sensei on page 2...)

DHARMA LIGHT
(SENSEI from page 1:)Siddhartha’s father, King
Suddhodana lavished the prince in the royal luxuries and
made sure that all unsightly visions were hidden away
from his son. However, despite the king’s efforts, it is
recorded that when Siddhartha was 29 he ventured out
from the Royal Palace on 4 different occasions and
witnessed an elderly person, a very ill person, a funeral
procession, and a holy man. It is generally said that it
was these excursions from the palace which provoked
the Prince to renounce his rights to the throne and leave
the Royal confines in search of the Truth.
Although the aforementioned episode is generally
regarded as the cause for leaving the Royal Palace,
when we re-examine what the old sage prophesized
along side the First Truth of Suffering, we can see things
a little differently. In the First Noble Truth, the Buddha
stated that the first of the four Great Sufferings in life
is “Birth”. Therefore, no matter what King Suddhodana
did to prevent Siddhartha from encountering suffering, in
the end it was inevitable that the Prince would leave
the Royal Palace in search of enlightenment as he had
already encountered one of the four great sufferings of
life just by being born.
Perhaps this gives us a new meaning for why
we commemorate the birth of the Buddha. Because
Siddhartha was born into this world of suffering, just as
inevitable was his renouncement of the world of delusion
and attainment of Enlightenment. In other words, the
birth is really the celebration of the final state of
attaining enlightenment.
On April 18th and 19th, we will be commemorating
the event of the birth of the Buddha. We will be
welcoming as our special guest, Rev. Satoshi Tomioka
from the Honolulu Betsuin, in Hawaii. May I take this
opportunity to invite you to join us on this truly wonderful
celebration recognizing the auspicious birth of Siddhartha
Gautama, the Buddha.

FUJINKAI
As the annual garage sale has
been scheduled for Saturday, June
27th, donations of any items which
are no longer needed would be
appreciated.
The revenue for
last year’s sale was over $1000
which included items sold at Bingo
nights.
If anyone is interested in renting a table, the
cost is $10. To reserve a table, please ask Hiroko
Yoshihara at 604.277.6521.
In conjunction with the garage sale, the Soft
Goods Drive continues, so we are asking again for any
clothing, shoes, purses, books and household items.
Although the temple has a donation bin in the front
parking lot, temple members should bring their donations
in to the temple as requested by the Developmental
Disabilities Association.
If plastic bags are needed,
these are under the stainless steel table in the “new”
kitchen. Please help yourself.
Takarajima donated bags of their garage sale
leftovers to our Soft Goods Drive. Their thoughtfulness
is appreciated. Overall, 46 bags are now up in the
gym storage. As we need to keep count, please bring
any bags to the new kitchen in order to keep count.
Goal is 151 bags!
JSBTC AGM will be held April 24 to 26 in
Steveston. Baking is needed to serve at the coffee
breaks. If anyone is baking during the next month,
please make a bit extra and bring to the temple.
Preparations are being made for the Spring Food
Fair on Sunday, May 24.
If anyone has not been
approached to buy food tickets in the past several years,
please contact Hiroko at the above number (in the first
paragraph) or email her at: [email protected]
Highlights of March
2015 Board Meeting
President’s Message
Bud Sakamoto
As I attend all the special services at
the temple and look around, I often feel
saddened to realize the loss of familiar
seniors who sat in the same specially
chosen seats in the Hondo. At this year’s
Keirokai to honour our members over seventy (70), it
was very apparent that more than half of the approximately
100 attendees were over the age of eighty (80). This
means that over the next decade there will be drastic
changes to the demographic of our membership.
As we are all aware change is natural and inevitable.
Also interconnectedness is natural and inevitable, but for
us all there are also ways and means to become more
connected.
Gratitude is a feeling that allows us to
be open to others. Being thankful and ready to show
appreciation for and to return kindness is something we
can all do. It is the seniors, who have come to temple
regularly and who I have gotten to know, who have
taught me the dharma ways of gratitude.
To all of you, who come to the temple, thank you
so much.
In Gassho,
Bud Sakamoto, President
Election of officers and selection of advisors for this
year was delayed to permit late directors to attend.
(only one more than quorum was present)
Mitts Sakai informed the Board that due to his turning
81, he has decided to cut back on many of his activities
with the temple such as advisory positions, columbarium
and donation counting committees, bingo treasurer and
building repairs. He will continue on with the monthly
shotsuki notice, 20/20 vision committee and once a
year toban cleaning. After 50 years of helping he feels
it is time cut back and hand things to the younger
generation. We hope some others will step up to help.
There is also a need for new members to join the
public relations committee, to help with the Newsletter
and advertising.
The board also debated a motion for the JSBTC
AGM, concerning the use of the Canadian Headquarters
and Residence of the Bishop. As the SBT donated the
land and the butsudan, there is concern that before
any changes are made to the use of the headquarters
building, the goals and objectives of the JSBTC need to
be reviewed and a clear vision and mission statement
needs to be established.

Steveston Buddhist Temple Income and
Expenditures 2014 and Budget 2015
The Steveston Buddhist Temple received a total of
$239,000 in income for 2014 to provide its various
religious, social and community services. The majority
of the income, 40%, came from donations from our
members and friends. Our expenditures for 2014 were
$235,000 of which 39% was for salaries and benefits.
We thus had a slight surplus for the year.
The budget for 2015 is similar to the actuals for
2014 for most income and expense categories.
We
have maintained the membership fee at $100 and
have provided a cost of living salary adjustment to our
Sensei and to our office secretary.
However, there
is a decline in Bingo income and a major repair of the
heating ducts in the gym. As a consequence, there
will be a shortfall of about $15,500 which will need to
be made up by additional fundraising or by expenditure
reductions to balance the budget.
A condensed version of the budget presented at the
Annual General Meeting is shown below.
If there are any questions concerning these figures
or if you require more information please contact the
Treasurer.
Rev. Tomioka will talk about basic
teachings of Buddhism including the
life of Shakyamuni Buddha. He will
relate these teachings to our daily lives
and explain in everyday language how
we can find happiness in what we
have now.
In this society and the
world, we have so many challenges as
a community and as individuals. The
cause of these challenges is not just outside but also
inside of our hearts. Buddhism teaches us how we can
become aware of our true nature and how we can live
our lives meaningfully and joyfully.
Rev. Satoshi Tomioka is from Shimane in the
southern part of Japan. He finished his studies at Ryukoku
University in Kyoto and his major was Shin Buddhism.
After Tokudo ordination and Kyoshi certification, he took
part in the IMOP(International Ministerial Orientation
Program) to become a minister. His assignment at the
Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin began in August 2013.

am. Although the voting is restricted to the representing
delegates, the meeting is open to all members as
observers. If you wish to learn what is happening at
other temples across Canada as well as what activities
are taking place at the other temples, this would be an
excellent opportunity to learn more about the organization.
Also, this year’s AGM will coincide with the 110th
Anniversary of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of
Canada (formerly BCC – Buddhist Churches of Canada).
As part of the 110th Anniversary, we are planning a
banquet on Saturday evening at the Continental Chinese
restaurant on Cambie Rd. and No. 5 Rd.

KEIROKAI 2015
Just over 100 people came to celebrate and
appreciate our seniors. A good time was had
by all as we enjoyed a wonderful bento lunch
followed by a slide presentation of previous
Keirokais as well as entertainment including
some shigin, singing, Odori dancing and a harp
performance.
Thank you to all of the volunteers and the
entertainers who made it a most pleasant
afternoon. A special recognition was given to the
most senior female and male in the audience,
Mrs. Eiko Kokubo and Mr. Jack Harada.
The contribution of all those who helped put
on the event is greatly appreciated as we held
this annual event to thank our senior members
for the many years they have dedicated towards
the temple. It was nice to see everyone leaving
the temple with smiles on their faces.
Searching for the Perfect
Mikasa Manju
On Saturday, March 7th a small group of temple
members and friends came together at 9:00 am to
make Mikasa manju for the Steveston Buddhist Temple
Keiroukai.
Itoko had all the equipment, ingredients
and tasks organized so we quickly formed groups and
prepared the batter according to the recipe. Then came
the cooking of the batter, one tablespoon at a time for
12 little pancakes on each of the 4 grills. Flip over
once and onto the tray where the anko was inserted
between two pancakes and then sealed together. After
a few tries, most of the manju were something to be
proud of and a worthy treat for our senior members.
Still we looked for the one which we felt was perfect.
Believe it or not, the one pictured below was made by
the group with men. If you have any suggestions on
how to make it more perfect please let us know.
This was a very social, easy going and fun activity.
There were only compliments and encouragement and
friendly banter.
Let’s hope we can arrange more
activities like this.
Our thanks to those who helped: Itoko Akune, Terry
Beresford, Misaye Hamaura, Bud Sakamoto, Hiroko
Yoshihara, Elmer Morishita, Mary Hirose, Lynn SakaiBoden, Joyce Ang, Emiko Oba, Lisa Hirose-Cameron,
Maya Whittier, Bob Hamaura, Frances Nakanishi and
Terry Ikuta. 250 Mikasa manju were made by 11:15,
followed by tea and chatter; then home to enjoy the
rest of the day.
The perfect Mikasa Manju
