Media Release Aarau in April 2015 CARAVAN 2/2015: Sarah Burger Series of Exhibitions of Young Art 1 May – 16 August 2015 Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau The Glarus-based artist Sarah Burger (b. 1982) is realising two new site-specific works for the foyer of the Aargauer Kunsthaus. By using large-scale panels of fabric with landscapes printed on them, she skilfully plays with various interior and exterior views. Rather than presenting her art in an exhibition space as is usual, Sarah Burger creates two site-specific works for the foyer of the Aargauer Kunsthaus. In keeping with the CARAVAN exhibition concept of a "mobile intervention," Burger seeks a dialogue with the light-filled, striking museum foyer designed by Herzog & de Meuron. She creates installations to explore the places in the Kunsthaus where interior and exterior virtually merge — especially at the large glass façade which separates the museum from the traffic junction Aargauerplatz. By placing them at the thresholdless windows, the large images printed on flowing fabric can be seen both from the inside and the outside. Sarah Burger confronts the views of the city with computer-generated "pictorial landscapes." Whether printed or downloaded from the Internet, photographs and found imagery are an important component of Burger’s artistic practice. In addition to other objects, images of modern architecture, ancient Egyptian sites, Greek sculptures, sublime mountain landscapes, and a camel train passing are among the elements incorporated into her installations, sculptures, and video pieces. The artist creates her poetic and reflective collages digitally by superimposing images in layers and transforming as well as deforming them. In spite of the deliberate reworking, chance plays a not insignificant role in the process of pictorial invention. Burger’s works for Aarau testify to a pictorial magic whose presence is resonant with the absence of what is represented and the temporality of images.
