SUMMER PROGRAMME
THE WTO, INTERNATIONAL
TRADE AND DEVELOPMENT

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND
The Summer Programme on the WTO, International Trade
and Development provides participants with a unique
opportunity to enter into the analysis and atmosphere of
multilateral trade, just a few meters away from the WTO.
The programme, delivered with the Graduate Institute’s
Centre for Trade and Economic Integration, combines and
integrates economic, legal and political analysis of international trade and development. Participants will benefit
from the input of negotiators, academics and issue-based
activists, and will experience the field of international trade
firsthand.

with an interest in international trade and related

The programme is in English.
DURATION
30 June to 11 July 2014.
The programme is designed as a whole but participants
who wish to enrol for one week may do so.
KEY INTERNATIONAL TRADE
CHALLENGES
Lectures and discussions will shed light on the following
issues: the reasons why countries open their economies
to trade and the reasons why they protect domestic
industries, the means and pathways they use to either
open or protect, what these considerations mean for the
multilateral trading system and their implications for
economic development.
The programme will cover topics such as trade in
manufactures, trade in services, regionalism, trade and
intellectual property rights, the links between trade and
development as well as the links between trade and
climate change.
THE PROGRAMME INCLUDES
Interdisciplinary lectures with renowned professors and
high-level analysts from the trade field, small-group
workshops and meetings with members of missions to
the WTO as well as trade and development-related
organisations in Geneva.

PROGRAMME
WEEK 1: CORE FEATURES AND ISSUES IN THE
WORLD TRADING SYSTEM
The first week of the programme will offer an interdisciplinary review of the features of international trade and the
world trading system from the perspectives of economics,
political science and law.
WEEK 2: DEVELOPMENT AND TRADE IN
MANUFACTURING, AGRICULTURE AND SERVICES
The second week of the programme will be framed by the
question of how trade works for development, and how
the development paradigm poses particular challenges to
a free-trade regime like the WTO.
PROGRAMME FEE
Tuition is CHF 3,500 for the full programme or 2,000 for
one week.
Tuition does not include travel costs, accommodation or
other living expenses in Geneva.

CREDITS
Successful participation may be accepted for credit at
other universities (6 ECTS credits ; or the equivalent US
credits). All participants receive a course certificate.
