What was Jesus Like?
How did Jesus come across to those who met him in the few, packed years of
his ministry? Certainly not as a kind of “superman” who was never weary. He
was remembered as once being so worn out that he even fell asleep in a boat
during a storm. He was pictured as being so tired from a journey that he sat
exhausted by a well and asked a stranger for a cup of water to drink. None of
the Gospels suggest that miracles supplied him with superhuman energy, let
alone food and drink. He was very different from those people we sometimes
meet who are bursting with energy, never betray any weariness, and seem
capable of living in a constant frenzy of activity.
Some critics harshly dismissed Jesus as “a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax
collectors and sinners” (Luke 7:34).
That was a nasty sneer, but all the same it expressed something profoundly true
about Jesus and his habits. For him, eating and drinking with others provided a
way of entering into communion with all kinds of people, especially those with
serious, spiritual problems. They found him to be a wonderful friend to be with,
someone who never turned dysfunctional people away and who changed their
lives—
lives—often by taking meals with them.

More Thoughts for Our Time
∗
I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.
∗
If all is not lost, then where on earth is it?
∗
It was a whole lot easier to get older, than to get wiser.
∗
It’s hard to make a comeback when you haven’t been anywhere.
∗
The world only beats a path to your door when you’re in the bathroom.
∗
If God wanted me to touch my toes, he’d have put them on my knees.
∗
When I’m finally holding all the right cards, everyone wants to play chess.
OUR MISSION PRAYER
We, the St Ignatius community, are called to live the good news.
We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be.
We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit
through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy.
We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness,
affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ. May we live
out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius.
