Rustop CI 100 Thinner Solvent-based mixture for diluting Mapecoat Rustop CI 100. Some application examples • Anti-rust coating for metallic structures, including those located in coastal areas. • Protection for metallic sheet metal used in the civil and industrial building sectors. TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS Mapecoat Rustop CI 100 is a two-component, epoxy resin-based primer with high solids according to a formula developed in the MAPEI research laboratories. RECOMMENDATIONS • Dilute Mapecoat Rustop CI 100 with Rustop CI 100 Thinner only. • Do not apply Mapecoat Rustop CI 100 on oxidised, rusty or dirty surfaces or on surfaces with traces of old coating materials. • Do not apply any coating over Mapecoat Rustop CI 100 until the solvents contained in the product have completely evaporated (never use the “wet on wet” method). • Drying and painting times refer to the dry thicknesses recommended. Thicker layers, poor ventilation and lower surrounding temperatures increase the amount of time required for the product to catalyse correctly. In such cases, the solvents may not evaporate completely and the waiting time required before painting or coating the product will be longer. • Only apply Mapecoat Rustop CI 100 when the temperature of the surface to be coated is at least +3°C higher than the dew-point temperature to prevent the product becoming detached. APPLICATION TECHNIQUE Preparation of the substrate All surfaces to be treated must be clean, sound, dry and free of all traces of dust, oil, grease or wax. It is very important that the surface is prepared correctly to guarantee correct application and the best performance of the product. The most suitable preparation method is sand-blasting, which removes all traces of old paint, rust, grease and encrustations from the surface. This type of treatment allows the surface to be brought down to a bare metal finish (SA 2½). Preparation of the mixture Pour component B of Mapecoat Rustop CI 100 into component A and mix with a drill at low speed with a mixing attachment until completely blended. The contents of each component of Mapecoat Rustop CI 100 are pre-dosed. If partial quantities of the components are used, mix each component separately prior to blending them together. Use precision electronic scales to dose each component at a ratio of A : B = 5.2 : 5.5 parts in weight, mix the two components and then blend them together. After blending the two components, let the mix stand for 10-15 minutes before use. If necessary, Mapecoat Rustop CI 100 may be diluted with Rustop CI 100 Thinner at a rate of 3% to 5% in weight, depending on the application technique used. Recommended average dry film thicknesses: – galvanized substrates: 75 μm; – carbon steel: 150 μm; – substrates in severe conditions and immersed substrates: 1 or 2 coats, total thickness 250 μm. Application of the mix Apply Mapecoat Rustop CI 100 with a medium-haired roller or brush for small surfaces or areas that just need patching up, or with airless spray for large surfaces. Apply the mix when the surrounding temperature is between +10°C and +30°C. Do not apply if the temperature is around dew-point temperature. Rustop CI 100 Thinner: from 3% to 5% in weight of Mapecoat Rustop CI 100, depending on application method used. Cleaning Clean tools used to prepare and apply Mapecoat Rustop CI 100 immediately after use with Rustop CI 100 Thinner or nitro thinner. Once hardened, the product may only be removed using mechanical means. CONSUMPTION Mapecoat Rustop CI 100: 6.5 m²/kg per 100 μm of thickness.
