JAUARY MEETIG
The next meeting of the Valley Woodworkers will be held at 6:30
p.m. on January 8, 2015, at the club’s meeting place at 300 12th Street,
Dunbar.
FEBRUARY MEETIG
There were 42 people in attendance at the December meeting with
no guests.
AOUCEMETS
From Peter Howell, Treasurer: Dues for the year 2015 are now
due. Checks are preferred, but cash is gladly accepted. If you pay with
cash, the exact amount due is appreciated. If there has been a change in
contact information, also let me know that.
The main source of income for our club is your dues. Each year we
come very close to running out of money, and we have not been able to
make the improvements that we would like to make. One concept that
helped the club budget tremendously is members who sign up for the
Woodworker Plus and Benefactor membership grades. Please consider
upgrading your membership. We have also had numerous members who
have made individual contributions through the year. Sometimes on a
semi-monthly basis, others a single donation. These $25, $50 and $100
contributions also greatly help the budget. Remember that because we
are a 501(c)(3) organizations, all dues and individual contributions are
tax deductible.
The following companies offer discounts to club members:
Klingspor Woodworking Shop - 10% - They receive our member list.
Hartville Tool - 15% - They receive our member list.
Ed’s Sharpening Service, 304.807.1015 - 15% on sharpening services.
The following companies provided materials for last year’s Salvation Army toy
project. Please give them special consideration when you make a purchase or need
materials for your projects: West Virginia Forestry Association, Blue Ridge
Machinery & Tool, J.C. Hamer Lumber Company, Home Depot of Teays Valley,
West Virginia Hobby and Craft, Teays Valley Hardware, West Virginia Marine,
Toyota Motor Manufacturing of WV Inc., Wurth Baer Supply & Woodcraft Supply.
*******
The next club project, a Demi-Lune half round table, will begin on
the third Saturday in January and continue on the third Saturday of each
month until finished. If you’re interested in making this table, contact
Peter Howell to register and get the plans.
TOY PRESETATIO
The toy presentation to The Salvation Army was December 7. Andy
Sheetz reported that we donated 155 doll cradles with bedding sets, 44
alphabet block wagons, and 261 toy cars of various types. Thanks to all
those that participated in the Toy Project.
LIBRARY
Jerill Vance highlighted the book “Hand or Simple Turning” from
the club library. There are also other books on turning in the library.
TOOL BOX WORKSHOP
Toyota has requested nine more tool boxes for this year. Jerill
Vance will head up this workshop starting Tuesday, January 13, at 8:30 a.
m. and probably continue the second Tuesday of the month until finished.
RAFFLE
There were four items that were raffled off at the December
meeting. Andy Sheetz won a pair of 24” Bessey Parallel Clamps. Bob
Shingleton won an American Flag. Lou Eubank won a center piece that
was donated by Wayne Price. Dan Dooley won a tape dispenser.
ELECTIO OF OFFICERS
Gerry Stover announced the slate of officers that the nominating committee
presented. They were: Ron Jones - president, Rick Chandler - 1st vice president,
George Six - vice president/membership, Andy Sheetz - vice president/toy
committee, Glen Gibbs - Secretary, Peter Howell - treasurer and Jerill Vance librarian. There was a call for nominations from the floor for any office and there
were none. The nominations were closed, and Herb Abdalla made a motion to
accept the slate of officers by acclimation. The motion was seconded and a voice
vote was taken. There were no votes in opposition.
DEMOSTRATIO
Gerry Stover talked about and demonstrated carbide tipped turning tools.
He explained that as a novice woodworker and turner he was drawn to carbide
tipped turning tools. After trying traditional turning gouges, he felt that the
carbide turning tools were more user-friendly and the learning curve was shorter.
Gerry was very impressed with the availability of professional turners to
share information and answer questions. He was invited to stop by Easy Wood
Tools, to visit with Craig Jackson, the owner, for a hands-on session. One of the
other advantages Gerry likes about the carbide tools is that you don’t have to
sharpen them.
SAFETY OTE
Power tools will frequently be used while working on club projects and
during demonstrations at club meetings. For your protection, safety glasses with
side shields, and hearing protection will be required for members to participate in
these activities. No exceptions will be made. Please bring your own safety glasses
and hearing protection. The club has some of these items, but we can not provide
this equipment for everyone, all the time. You are responsible for your own
safety! Note: Turning off hearing aids is not considered to be hearing protection.
SHOW AD TELL
Andy Sheetz showed a jewelry box he
made. The box is made of cherry and
stained with cherry and has a clear top
coat. In addition there is a secret compartment under the false bottom.
Dan Dooley showed a frame he made
for a granite plaque. The plaque was
made to honor Diana Jeffries by her
co-workers at AEP. Diana was also a
member of Valley Woodworkers.
Diana lost her battle with cancer earlier in the year.
Bob Aronson showed several cutting
boards he made for Christmas presents. The boards are made of cherry
and maple. The boards are about 2”
thick and will be finished with
butcher block finish.
Bruce Martin showed two WVU logos for Christmas presents. They
were finished with a couple coats of
Watco Danish Oil and polyurethane.
Ron Jones showed a toy car he made
from some of the scraps he had in his
shop.
