Gagnon conveyed his impression that society has a tendency to stereotype older persons or treat them as a homogeneous group. We must always be mindful to see and care for them as individuals, each with their own particular health concerns. Older adults have a right to quality health care services and they deserve the same dignity, care and options as other younger clients. Home‐Based Rehab: Ms. Jackie Derksen and Ms. Cynthia Carr presented results from a Home‐Based Rehabilitation Research project, undertaken in Southern Health‐Santé Sud for the delivery of rehabilitation services in the homes of clients who are unable to attend regular outpatient rehabilitation programs. The project has had very positive responses from clients who have appreciated this exercise and/or treatment plan, tailored to their specific needs. As well, they also appreciated that home care attendants are available to assist them when required, improving their ability to remain living at home. Medical Services: Dr. Denis Fortier provided the Board of Directors with an overview of the role of the VP ‐ Medical Services and shared the concurrent opportunities and challenges. Responsible for medical administration in Southern Health‐Santé Sud, the VP ‐ Medical Services oversees Chiefs of Staff and Medical Directors, budgets, contracts, complaints, recruitment/retention, programs, performance reviews, Medical Staff By‐Laws and Rules & Regulations. In addition to medical administration, the portfolio also includes leadership for pharmacy services, diagnostic services and electronic health systems solutions. Policy Review: The Policy Review Committee presented various policies for consideration by the Board of Directors. In addition to approving policies on Board Governance, Accountability and Board Community Engagement, the Board also reviewed Board Linkage to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the CEO position profile. While the Board is completely accountable for the organization, the Southern Health‐Santé Sud's CEO role is a key means in fulfilling Board accountability. The Board’s sole official connection to the operational organization, its achievements and conduct is through the CEO. Strategic Health Plan: The Southern Health‐Santé Sud Board of Directors recently held a Strategic Planning Board Workshop as part of its vision ‘Together leading the way for a healthier tomorrow’. A summary of the workshop discussions was reviewed to provide the foundation for further stakeholder input and efforts in the coming months for when the Board considers and completes its Strategic Health Plan in 2015. 1 of 2 Financial: The Southern Health‐Santé Sud Board of Directors approved the Statement of Operations and Financial Position, as presented by Southern Health‐Santé Sud Kathy McPhail, CEO and Ken Klassen, VP ‐ Finance & Capital, for the 7‐month period to November 30, 2014, indicating a Year‐to‐Date Operating Funding surplus of $1,534,795. Preparedness for Ebola Virus: The Board of Directors receive current updates on the work the province and regional health authorities and staff providers are doing to be prepared. Mandatory Long‐Form Census: The Board of Directors continues to lobby the federal government with additional letters to MPs Candice Bergen, Robert Sopuck and Ted Falk to reinstate the long‐form census. As an organization that regularly uses data to support informed decision‐making and planning for our health programs, Southern Health‐Santé Sud is reliant on good quality data that reflects our population. The Census Long Form provided reliable and valid estimates of a population’s characteristics. For example, we knew that the percentage of low income families varied across the regional health authority districts in Manitoba ranging from 4% to as high as 21% of households. (2006 Census). Accordingly this information helps to adapt programs and services for these families. As well, immigration continues to impact parts of our region underlining again our need for good information to support planning. The next regular Southern Health‐Santé Sud Board of Directors meeting is planned for January 28, 2015 Regional Office ‐ La Broquerie.
