The Witness of the Holy Family
On the front cover of today’s bulletin is a print of one
of my favorite icons of the Holy Family. There is a
beauty that radiates from this image – the colors in
the original icon are striking; the tenderness that is
expressed in the faces of Mary and Joseph as they are
inclined toward centering their family on Jesus, yet
their
gaze
seems to be directed beyond the here and
now; and Jesus is different, fully present and
confident in the heart of the family but He is looking
out at us. Family is beautiful.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph are a model for our families,
a light to give us an example, encouragement and
Hope. We love the people we are with best, when we
are inclined toward them with tenderness but focused
on heaven. We make Jesus the center of our family
when we say prayers together before we go to bed,
when we thank God for the blessings He gives us in
the people we get to live with, and when we offer
Him our worship together with our whole community
at Mass on Sunday. And when Jesus is the heart of
our family confidence of His love affects our whole
lives.
Today is a special day for our parish family because
we get to celebrate with one of our families who have
lived their lives in imitation of the Holy Family.
Today, Dick and Helen Cheek celebrate 60 years of
married life. 60 years! I don’t think Dick or Helen
would ever say that they are perfect models of the
Holy Family, but I can tell you that Jesus is central to
their lives. There is always a place for another in
their home. There is a desire to learn and grow in
their faith and to find excellent ways of living that
faith in practical ways in praise of God and service of
others. Even though their kids have long graduated
from the school, they still care and take great joy in
the kids who are here now. They have seen priests
come and go, but none has left without having been
helped to be better for having been at their parish.
Thank you Dick and Helen for your example of a
holy family in our days and for giving others courage
to have holy families too!

St. Vincent DePaul News
Today is the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and
Joseph. We hear the words: The child grew and became strong,
filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.” As we
remember the poor during this New Year may we also grow in
wisdom and have the favor of God upon us.
Please remember to support the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul in the coming year so that together we can continue to bring
comfort and peace to our brothers and sisters who are suffering.

and Ministers to the Homebound on January 17, 2015 at 10:00AM
-12:00PM at St. Rose. This training will be a refresher course for some,
and perhaps the first training for others. It will also include information
about new practices for best care of chalices and for use of pixes.
Please make every effort to attend this important training.
Meals delivered--mission accomplished: Thank you on behalf of the
almost 90 families who received Christmas Meal boxes this weekend
and the many more the food collected during St. Rose of Lima's St.
Vincent de Paul November 22nd Food Drive will feed in the coming
year. Most meals were delivered on Saturday with a remaining dozen
or so carted off after Sunday Masses. Food deliveries were made
possible by Fifth-Grade AHS students who helped set up the tables and
boxes, Vincentians and students who filled the boxes, Botsford and
Goodfellow vendors and Joe VanHaverbeke who contributed fresh
produce, dozens of families who delivered the boxes Saturday, and
those who pitched in on Sunday and Monday morning to finish the job.
From St Rose of Lima's St. Vincent de Paul Conference, a very Merry
Christmas to all of you and the very best of what the New Year has to
offer.

gathering. For confidential information about or to register for the
program beginning with the weekend on Jan. 16-18, 2015, please call
1-503-225-9191 or visit www.helpourmarriage.org

Disillusionment, (3) Misery, and (4) Awakening. Many marriages
experience the first 3 Stages. Marriages that end in divorce never make
it to the 4th Stage of Awakening. Don’t give up without learning about
the 4th Stage of Awakening. If your marriage suffers from
Disillusionment or Misery please contact Retrouvaille. For confidential
information about or to register for the program beginning with a
weekend on Jan. 16 - 18, 2015, please call 1-503-225-9191 or visit
