Alberta Deaf News
January 2015
Message from the Editor:
Welcome to another new year! I can hardly believe I have been doing this since 2012! Wow!
I still remember clearly working on the very first issue of ADN, which was 15 pages long and took
me a week straight to build! Now I look at this 26-page issue, which looks so professional and
much improved, and I feel like it’s very short compared to what ADN readers have come to expect
in the last two years!
I hope everyone has had a successful year of 2014 and is looking forward to the new experiences and challenges that await us in 2015. By the end of the year we should have some real progress on Canadian VRS service which has been a hot button issue for so many years. In addition,
the Alberta School for the Deaf’s modernization plan is starting to get underway. EAD, AAD, ADSA
and ACSD all had productive years, and CAD has made great strides this year. Personally, I think
the future is looking VERY bright in the Alberta Deaf community!
In past years, I have encouraged ADN readers to make and follow new years’ resolutions.
However, I have been thinking—why do we need to wait until an arbitrary date on the calendar
to make promises of self-improvement? You can do that at any time! Case in point, one common
resolution people make this time of year is to improve their fitness. I have taken the initiative on
my own personal fitness resolution already, and have been attending my gym for two months already. When you see an opportunity for self-improvement, why not start it right away instead of
waiting for the next year? Whether you think you should improve your body, your mind or your
community involvement, challenge yourself to get out there today!
Cheers and have a great month—bundle up, I have a feeling that we are in for a cold stretch!

Greetings to all Deaf Albertans and Deaf community members!
First of all, Happy New Year to the Deaf community in Alberta. Also, I hope you all have
had a wonderful x-mas break with traveling or visits with your families and friends! You all
should be well prepared to have your new years’ resolution challenges to do your best and
work hard to be more successful or become more positive and supportive with your Deaf club
(s) and community's various activities, fundraising events and short or long term plans for January 2015 - August 2017 including Deaf Alberta Expo 2015, CAD's 80th Annivesary banquet/
celebration in Calgary and 5 Mega Events 2017 in Edmonton which includes;
1st Canada/Alberta Deaf Teens Leadership and Literacy Camp via DYC - Deaf Youth Canada,
Canada/Alberta Family Literacy for the Deaf via Connect Society,
1st Canada Deaf 55+ Games via EAD SC and
1st Canada Deaf Expo (Deaf Alberta Expo) via EAD
I am just updating you all that there are several current topics/issues as follows;
1) I had awonderful flight trip to Toronto on Dec. 2 for two town hall meetings; one morning
session with OAD (Donald Prong, Executive Director) with the Deaf seniors of BRCD and one
evening session with TAD (Gary Malkowski, President)’s Deaf seniors, members and visitors focusing on the Deaf 55Plus Games Movement in Western Canada, ideas for the 1st Ontario Deaf
55+ Games and an update on the 1st Canada Deaf 55+ Games in Edmnoton, August 2017.
Then, I took another connecting flight trip to Montreal on Dec. 3 for one afternoon meeting
with 5 key contacts on the same topic adding some ideas for the 1st Quebec Deaf 55+ Games.
After that, I took a one-way train ride to Ottawa for only $38 on Dec. 4 to attend the CAD-ASC
board meeting followed by a 2-day conference on social enterprise. Overall, I think it was one
of thebest travel itineraries in my lifetime and am eagerly looking forward to seeing more positive and progressive action for those 2 potential provincial games plus the CAD-ASC
Banquet Party in July 2015 with CAD-ASC & DYANS as co-hosts.
2) Emil Kvarnberg of Calgary & Calvin Novak of Edmonton as AAD Reps attended CAD-ASC's 2day conference on "Social Enterprise" in Ottawa on Dec. 5 - 6 after taking a one week vacation
to do some sightseeing in Ottawa. They will make their respective presentations during the
CAD - EAD general meeting on Monday, February 2. Also, they will do a joint presentation for
attendants during AAD's next board meeting/open forum at EADCC on Saturday, February 7.
3) Rebecca Lehman of Calgary and Ryan Fyten of Edmonton are still working as our IPAD Technical/Instruction Support Staff with designated seniors in their respective residential city/area
of Calgary and Edmonton until June 2015.
4) For your friendly reminder, Imran Hakamali as our new ADN - Alberta Deaf News Vlogger sincerely
would be appreciated if you can give some input or feedback on his vlog work for ADN so far.
5) The CAD-ASC board and DYANS are still working on a final schedule plan of special events for CAD-ASC's
upcoming AGM 2015 and 75th Anniversary Banquet & Celebration party tentatively in Halifax, NS July 2 - 5
2015 subject to a final CAD-ASC board approval in mid-January 2015. The plans will be shared with AAD/
EAD/CAD boards & members via email or in meetings or via ADN message.
6) I would like to share my very unfortunate news with you all that our experienced AAD Secretary Linda
Cundy resigned from her post last month but agreed to continue as our chairperson of AAD-AVRS Committee. So far, the interim board of CAV (VRS) has been working on the final board slate of finding those 9
nominees and candidates from designated groups representatives. Linda will keep all of us well informed
and updated via email messages or meetings over the next few months until April 2015 or so. Keep your
golden eyes open to keep up with this very exciting and thrilling milestone in our history as we move towards permanent VRS in Canada, hopefully ready by December 2015 or so. Cheers & stay positive and patient!
7) AAD will have its board meeting/open forum at EADCC on Saturday, February 7 at 10 am - 12 noon. I am
prepared to chair the special DAC - Deaf Alberta Coalition meeting at EADCC at 1 pm - 3 pm and will email
the tentative meeting agenda to designated associations and representatives. After that, AAD will proceed
with its tentatively final program plan presentation for the Mega Events 2017 during the open forum
starting at 3:30 pm. Afterwards, AAD will provide some pizza treats and drinks for designated committee
executives to continue and finalize the schedule plan, activities, communication system , representation/
referral, network, public relations and so on.
8) AAD just received the casino pool funding of nearly $81,000 from AGLC for our 2-day casino duty in August 2014. We will discuss more about this money during AAD's upcoming board meeting on Feb. 7. Handwaves & our special note of thanks to our casino volunteers last August.
9) I am searching for someone here in Edmnoton who would be interested to do a paid service as an experienced meeting minutes recorder (as temporary secretary) for AAD board meetings on 4 future meeting
dates - all on Saturdays. Please contact me if you are interested.
Many Thanks! Hope that you all enjoy your slow re-building month of January for CAD Activities, CAD
SC's Tuesdays, EAD Activities, EAD SC's Tuesdays & EAD Community Bingo events and DHA’s board meeting
on Jan. 28. Be sure to have your personal list of new goals/challenges for your resolutions in 2015 ready!
Good Luck/Handwaves for you all!
Keep in touch! For more info, pls feel free to contact me in person anytime or email: [email protected]

ASLIA (Edmonton) is All Wrapped Up!
With baited breath, a small but enthusiastic crowd of ASLIA members and
supporters congregated Saturday, December 6th at the Thirsty Camel Pubhouse (Edmonton) to see who the lucky winners of this year’s wine draw
fundraiser would be. Also at stake was the title of “Best Team Name”
which was determined via online survey. In total, there were 18 teams
competing and an impressive 90 bottles of wine collected. Without further
ado, here are the results:
1st place and winners of 40 bottles of wine – Sip Happens
2nd place and winners of 30 bottles – Forgive Us for We have Zinned
3rd place and winners of 15 bottles – Grape Stomping Dweebs
…and the best name/winners of 5 bottles went to Hot Tub Wine Machines.
In addition to the final draw and best name announcement, a number of
generous donors made it possible for ASLIA to raise even more through a
silent auction. Up for grabs was everything from an Edmonton Oilers jersey
to jewellery and crafting items, to a scenic flight around the city. ASLIA
would like to thank its generous donors for helping them bring in $767.00!
Together, with the $450.00 collected from registrations in the wine draw,
ASLIA raised $1,217.00 from this event!
Thank you to all who put teams together and to all who attended the wrap
up. Appreciation to those who helped collect wine, organized the auction,
helped with advertising etc. as well. Last but not least, a big shout out to
Alicia Ponciano for coordinating. Thank you for investing your time and energy into ASLIA!
So, that’s a wrap for this year! Let’s come back bigger and better in 2015!
