Take care, Happy January 2015!!! ‘Til next month… Reflecting back on 2014, many things happened. Like Susan Taylor—Administrator you, we endured some unexpected repairs plus our normal “to do” lists. As we struggled through these times, we also enjoyed all the good happenings. Many improvements took place, we bought our first NHC bus, had numerous great activities, and most of all enjoyed the bonds created with our residents and their families and friends. Our team of staff met all the challenges the year brought to them. And they are ready to embrace 2015. I feel blessed that it was all part of my life. With the new year on our horizon, we all pause to look back, cherishing what was good. At the same time we look forward to what will be great. But flipping Resident of the Month Congratulations to Harriet McCarthy. She is the January resident of the month at NHC Maryland Heights. Harriet is so enjoyable to talk with, make sure you take a minute to congratulate her. She was born and raised in Atlanta where her mom and dad met. Harriet says, “We had a happy life.” After high school she attended girls college in Missouri for a year, then married and raised a family, four children which included twins. When asked about having twins, Harriet just said, “Oh, dear!” She also said the kids loved animals and “brought home everything...and sometimes that just wouldn’t do.” For 15 years they did have a dog, “Footsie.” Dining Room Request If you are planning to have a meal with your family member in the dining room (and are not regularly there), please call ahead to one of our dietary supervisors, Nancy or Martin, before you arrive. This will give the best opportunity to arrange seating that will provide a good dining experience for you, other visitors, and all of our residents. One of her favorite hobbies was keeping up with Hollywood stars. She went to the movies a lot and kept a very large scrap book with pictures and Alzheimer’s Association Support Group Meeting articles. Some of her favorite celebrities were Robert January 15th, 7-8:30pm at NHC Redford, and the Rat Pack with Frank Sinatra. She Multi-Purpose Room also enjoyed roller skating, football, and stock car The Alzheimer’s Association Support Group meets monthly, led by racing. She said her family went to football games Social Services Director, Maria McAllister. This group is open to with her dad, a big Georgia Tech fan. And the stock all who are care-givers for someone with dementia. car races were “big fun!” Harriet spoke from the heart when she talked about her coming to NHC Maryland Heights. She said, “I chose this place. I love the residents to talk to...I needed this place, because I saw my kids would not be able to do what I needed. I wanted their lives to be great and have balance.” NHC wishes to express our deepest sympathies for the family and friends of the residents who have recently passed. Coco and Friends January cold settles in as 2015 begins. It quite naturally becomes a time to think about the year that has just left, and most of all to think about new friends made and old friends no longer here. Maybe that is why I really do think there is something special about experiencing the change of all four seasons. The memories of seasons gone by and the anticipation of new seasons to come, can warm us up even on cold days. Visit, remember, enjoy. Happy New Year!! Partner of the Month Congratulations to Cassandra Alexander. She has been voted January 2015 Partner of the Month. Cassandra has been at NHC Maryland Heights since 2002 and this is her first time to win this honor. Cassandra is also a mother of three boys and two of them are twins! So with everything else she does, she is also a busy mom. One favorite family activity is a night of bowling and pizza. Cassandra also loves to read fiction of all kinds, and R&B from the 90’s is some of her favorite music. Cassandra is from St. Louis. She graduated from Webster Groves High School and then did her CNA certification with some of her friends so she could work and do more schooling. She is close to being finished with a double major in criminal justice and psychology. Currently she works as the Memory Care Liason and as part of the Restorative team. She really brings a diversified experience and skill set to the care of residents at NHC. She started her work experience here as a CNA on the overnight shift. Since then she has moved to days. She works throughout the building now. At first she worked Wing 3, then Meadows, then with the restorative team, and now her focus is the Cognitive Stimulation Therapy program (CST) for residents throughout the building. Cassandra says, “I love having time to spend with patients, the flexibility I have allows me to give them more personalized care.” She says one of her highlights at work is when she comes up with a new and exciting idea for her CST group and sees the residents really enjoy it. Cassandra, thanks for all your great work. You are making a difference. Activities Department News Wow, it is always busy at Activities, especially through the recent Christmas and Thanksgiving seasons. But the New Year just gives a jump start with thinking about everything new we can do this year. The challenge is mixing the old and new to create a really great year for our residents. A special thanks always to our volunteers, families and friends who contribute in so many ways to making these days and months joy-filled for our residents. Welcome to Meadows January 2015 Did you know that Meadows residents have been getting out on the NHC bus? In December they went for a ride to see Christmas lights and have hot chocolate and cookies. They loved it. You should have seen the bus the next day...looked like the remains of a lively party! What fun they had!! When not out seeing the lights and sights, the spirit of fun still flows in-house. Alzheimer’s Association Give yourself credit, not guilt! Having trouble with memory does not mean you have Alzheimer’s. Many health issues can cause problems with memory and thinking. When dememtia-like symptoms are caused by treatable conditions...they may be reversed. www.alz.org
