I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and that you were able to
spend time with family and friends. I
feel fortunate as I had my family home
for Christmas and we were able to
spend time together.
We enjoyed a wonderful Holiday Buffet
in December prepared by the dietary
department, led by Chef Jim Martini and
Dietitian Jen Peake. I would like to
thank the Dietary Department for the
delicious food and the Activity Department led by Holly McBride and Cristina
Dodson, for the beautiful decorations
throughout the building.
The Activity Department shines
throughout the holiday season as they
put the glitz and glamour throughout the
facility.

During the month of January we recognize our Activity Department for the
fantastic job they do year round.
The Activity Department is responsible for coordinating group programs,
multiple small groups and one on one activities every day for our residents.
In conjunction with the events planned inside the facility,
the department also plans and leads all our resident trips
throughout the year including the holiday light tour that
took place in December.

Resident Rights
The resident rights for January are….
19.A patient or resident is entitled to be free from mental,
verbal, sexual or physical abuse, including
corporal punishment or involuntary seclusion.
29. If a husband and wife are patients in the same nursing
home, the married couple is entitled to share a room, if both
spouses consent. If husband and wife are residents of a home for the
aged, the married couple is entitled to share a room unless medically
contraindicated and documented by the attending physician in the medical
record.
31. Each patient or resident shall be provided with appetizing meals that
meet the recommended dietary allowances for his or her age and
sex and that may be modified according to special dietary needs
or ability to chew.

39. At the time of admission or at any time thereafter, a patient or
resident shall have the right to designate a representative to act on his
or her behalf. Such a designation shall be in writing and shall specify
the scope of the representation, the duration of the representation and
the names of the patient or resident and representative. Upon designation of a representative, the facility shall be immediately notified by
a copy of the designation. The facility shall provide proper forms for the patient
or resident to provide for the designation of a representative at the time of admission. The facility's policy shall provide that if the patient or resident is adjudicated incompetent and not restored to legal capacity, the rights and responsibilities of the individual as specified in the Michigan Public Health Code or the Social
Security Act shall be exercised by the person appointed under state law to act on
the patient’s or resident’s behalf and within the scope of the designation. If a patient or resident becomes unable to exercise his or her own rights, and has not
been adjudicated incompetent by a state court, any legal surrogate designated in
accordance with state law may exercise the patient’s or resident’s rights, to the
extent provided by state law.

Food For Thought For January 2015
Happy New Year to everyone! I hope the New Year brings joy
and good health to you and your families.
As the New Year begins I would like to say Thank you to everyone that attended our Holiday Buffet. It was nice to see so
many families in attendance and I especially want to Thank our Staff for
their hard work in making this event the success that it was. Well Done!
During the upcoming year I will begin to make slight changes in the menu
selections, trying to incorporate popular items as well as requests made by
residents. We try to encourage residents to inform us of menu selections
that they would like to see on the menus.
By attending the resident council meetings, you would be able to voice your
likes and dislikes. This is good feedback for our department to make meal
time a pleasurable event.
As always any questions or concerns please see myself or Jen Peake R.D. and
we will be happy to assist you.

Thank You From Resident Council
The resident council would like to take this opportunity to thank
those of you who donated to the Laplant Family. With the help of
everyone, we were able to give this family a holiday that they may
not have had. The family was so pleased with all of the wrapped
gifts that it brought tears to their eyes. Those little
angels were able to open gifts on Christmas day all
thanks to you. We will be posting pictures when
they come in. Thanks again for having such a big
heart!

Activity Professional Week
The month of January is a special time for the Activity Department.
During the week of January 18th-24th, we will be recognizing the
Department and all that they provide for the residents here at Hoyt.
The Department is made up of Cristina Dodson, Pam Savage, Julianna
Gulser, Rashael Perko, Stephanie Zeleniuk, and Tori LyVere.
Due to the dedication of this staff the residents of Hoyt have
the opportunity to engage in many activities throughout the
day. This department is not only responsible for facilitating
programs but also engaging residents in small groups along
with providing personal visits. I applaud all of your efforts
and dedication you make not only to the residents but also
to the TEAM! You as individuals impact the residents and
they look to you as their friends.

Resident E-Mail
As the holiday season comes to an end and you start to
look at all of your photos, do not forget to share them
with your loved ones. If you send pictures, please
make sure that they are sent as an
attachment so that we can change the size if need be
and print them off. We print off the e-mails for the residents Monday thru Friday and the residents really enjoy this. It is important
that you put the resident's name in the subject area because we
have many moms and dads and grandmas and grandpas who live
here. The e-mail address is
[email protected].
Thank you for sharing your pictures and I am sure your loved ones
will enjoy them. Thanks for your cooperation.
Cold Weather
Just a reminder to families now that the snow and cold weather are here
keep in mind your loved one’s closet. Please take a few moments to make
sure that their clothing is appropriate for the cold weather. Many residents often like to dress in layers or enjoy having a sweater to put on or
something they can throw over their shoulders. This would also be a good
time to make sure that their clothing is labeled, especially with all the new
clothes for Christmas. We also ask that if you see that a
label has come off, let us know so we can put a new one
on. Keep in mind if your loved one has a scheduled outing
or a doctor’s appointment, they should have warm clothes,
for example jackets and gloves. We thank you for taking
the time to check on this and in helping us keep our residents warm during the cold months.
The residents at Hoyt spent one afternoon
wrapping gifts for the adopted family and
had a blast. Staff also took time out of their
day to help the residents prepare the gifts to make this a special
holiday time for the families.

February Events
The month of February is a special month for Hoyt. This month is not
only filled with love and warm fuzzy thoughts, it is also
the month that we crown our King and Queen. We will
be posting information on the bulletin boards so keep
an eye out. Take this opportunity to start thinking of
who you feel would make a great King and Queen. Remember it has to be residents who live at Hoyt. Hoyt
will also be having a big party during the month of February to announce
the winners. We cannot wait to see who will be wearing the crowns this
year.
