Splash (Dec/Jan 15) Issue!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
New Facilities. New Achievements. New Year.
T ime passes by very quickly. It seems to race by faster,
especially when we are busy trying our best to complete
our list of to-dos in the limited and (very often) short timeframe. Here we are again, nearing towards another end
of the year, with Christmas just being around the corner!
The end of the year tends to bring out the “reflective”
side of us and it is the time of the year when we ponder
and take stock of our achievements. The Club has
done much this year, in terms of its infrastructure. The
Cabana was reopened at end of September, with its chic
European casual dining concept. The Deli Cabana has
recently been completed, and will give members more
dining options, al fresco style. We have taken members’
feedback and preferences into account, as we have also
adjusted the height of the Deli Cabana to a level that
maximises its aesthetic appeal whilst at the same time,
allowing members to enjoy the outdoors, like the breeze
on a cool balmy evening. In addition, corrective works at
the Multi-Storey Car Park have finished, and we now have
more parking lots available for members and guests.
The Jade Phoenix Chinese Restaurant has also been
given a nice revamp with a new menu, a new team and a
new Chinese Master Chef. The dishes are what you can
find at a five-star Hong Kong Cantonese restaurant and
the prices have been kept reasonable. Hence, there is
no better time than now, during this festive season, to try
out the new menu. Since the reopening, response has
been very good and the restaurant is mostly full during
the weekends. We received feedback from members that
they would like to spend their Chinese New Year reunion
dinner at the Club, therefore we are pleased to announce
that the new Jade Phoenix restaurant will be opened on
the eve of Chinese New Year. So please book early, for
your reunion dinner, as we have already received many
enquires and bookings!
The refurbishment and revitalisation process at the
Club is a journey that is continuous and never-ending.
Hence, I am grateful
for your support at the
Extra-Ordinary General
Meeting on 19 October,
for giving us the
approval on the Capital
Expenditure
Budget,
from 20 October 2014 to
31 May 2015.
This
will allow us to embark
on
the
necessary
refurbishment and addons, that are vital for the
Club.
Still related to the theme of rejuvenation at the Club,
we are pleased to give a warm welcome to new members,
who have recently joined the SSC family. It is always nice
to see new faces at the Club, and as we set to welcome
the New Year, we would like to extend our warmest
wishes to our newest members.
Finally, the icing on the (Christmas fruit) cake, for
2014, must be the Club’s sporting achievements on the
swimming front. We have been crowned Champions
at the 20th SSC Open Invitational Midget Meet! This is
testament to all the hard work that have been put in by
our young swimmers, coaches, parents and of course, all
our backroom staff, who have worked tirelessly behindthe-scenes.
On this happy note, I would like to thank all members
and our staff who have made the year 2014, a special
and memorable one. I wish you, and your family, a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year.

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE
The other side of midnight
T he young boy tugged at his mother’s samfoo and
pleaded “Mama, could we have some fish today please?
We haven’t had fish or meat for a very long time …” The
frail looking middle aged lady gave a distant hollow look,
as she fidgeted with the few coins and two small notes
in her hand. I was holding onto my mother’s basket in
the centre of the wet market, when we saw this heart
wrenching scene. For the next few minutes, the lady
continued to look oblivious to the plea from her son. She
was deep in thought, probably contemplating what she
could buy to feed her family with that meagre amount
she had in hand. My mother suddenly bent down and
whispered to me, “See, you are fortunate, we still have
salted fish and tofu today for our meal…” Then, without
another word she walked over to the fishmonger, bought
the remaining two fish from him and passed it to the lady.
Not a word was exchanged but as we turned to leave, I
saw the lady’s moist and reddening eyes, while the boy
stared with astonishment at the two fish in his mother’s
once empty basket.
I was too young to fully comprehend my mother‘s
action then, especially when I realised later that we ended
up with one dish less for the rest of the week because of
this, but my heart was strangely warmed by what I saw.
I can still feel that afterglow of what had happened as I
reminiscence on it.
Many families will be going overseas during the holiday
season to enjoy their year-end vacation. For others, they
will be helping to ring up the cash registers at shopping
centres, as the allure of good buys is extended to near
midnight. Some of you are probably already in that
celebratory mood, partying till the wee hours. It is well
and good that we get to enjoy the fruits of our labour.
It will add special meaning to all these celebrations, if
we could spare a thought for those who live at the other
side of the midnight revelry — those who are not able to
afford a break or enjoy the season the way we can. The
children, especially from
fractured families, longing for that touch of
concern or care from
someone, hoping that
one of their wishes will
come true, whether it
is for that daily warm
meal, a much sought
after gadget or that pair
of sports shoes that
could make them feel
a little more complete
and less deprived in school.
Our Social & Lifestyle Department, in collaboration
with Care Community Services Society (CCSS), has
organised an activity for children from Eunos Carehut to
make Christmas themed ornaments. You can place your
order for these beaded art ornaments at the Main Lobby
Reception Counter for $10 each. With every purchase,
you will receive a card to pen your wishes and have it
hung on our Christmas tree in the lobby. All proceeds
will be donated to CCSS, which fund many children’s
services, including CareHuts. CareHuts operate schoolbased student care centres that provide affordable afterschool care for children from low-income and single
parent families, so that they do not fall prey to undesirable
influences.
As we are a Club where the People make the
difference, let’s come together and be a conduit of love
and care through this worthy initiative. May your hearts
be strangely warmed too, as you reach out to touch other
lives this Christmas.
Blessed Christmas!

New Members Introduction Night: 30 October
Welcome aboard!
by KAJAL PARIKH
O n 30 October, the Club’s new members experienced
a good session of networking, as they got to know their
fellow members better, at the New Members Introduction
Night event, held at the Grand Ballroom. They also had
the opportunity to mingle with the Management Committee
members as well as the Heads of Departments (HODs)
over drinks. Staff from the Food and Beverage, Swimming,
Sports and Social and Lifestyle Departments, were on hand
at the pre-function area to promote and garner participation for their respective
activities and events.
Thereafter, members adjourned to the Ballroom where a welcome address
was given by our Vice President, Mr Gary Oon. The members then travelled
down memory lane while watching a video featuring the Club’s progress from
its early days to the present. Later, new members were treated to a lavish
spread of the Club’s wide range of dishes.
Overall, the new members definitely felt welcomed, as they left the venue,
with a better knowledge of the Club. They also established new friendships
with their fellow members, Management Committee members and got to know
some of our HODs. 

Extra-Ordinary General Meeting: 19 October
CAPEX goes ahead
by SHYAMALA NAGULESWARAN
T he
Club’s
Extra-Ordinary
General
Meeting
(EOGM) was held at the Grand Ballroom on Sunday,
19 October to obtain approval for the Capital Expenditure
(CAPEX) budget for 20 October 2014 to 31 May 2015.
The Management Committee (MC) was praised by
members for their excellent preparation and presentation
of CAPEX budget items at the meeting. The collated
itemised breakdown of the budget requirements for each
department was clearly presented, allowing for it to be
easily understood by everyone. This was regarded as the
standard to be set for future AGMs.
Members voiced their opinions, brought up valid points
and provided suggestions that were relevant to certain
key areas.
One of the suggestions was pertaining to the vacant
premises at the second level of the North Wing, that is up
for lease. A suitable venue for retail business, it has a floor
area of approximately 1,392 square feet. The MC has
mentioned that if this space is not filled up by any service
provider by the end of the year, they may consider turning
it into an F&B outlet. This prompted suggestions from

members, which included transforming it into a multipurpose area advocating a healthy lifestyle. This area
could feature a Yoga or Spinning Studio, to complement
the other wellness entities in the Club. Another suggestion
was to introduce a Japanese cuisine outlet, to give
members a variety of choices in F&B.
A member also proposed that instead of discarding the
items that need to be changed, the Club could sell them
as second-hand items. The money from the proceeds
could then be used to help fund the CAPEX budget.
Overall, the Club has taken a conservative and careful
approach towards arriving at the final proposed CAPEX
budget, to reflect changes that are absolutely necessary.
The outcome was that no objections were raised and the
CAPEX budget was approved and will be adopted. After the
EOGM, members were treated to a scrumptious buffet. 

Fire Station Tour: 4 October
Fire fighter for a day!
by MANDY LAM
T o celebrate Children’s Day this year, over 30 members
and their children turned up for a tour of the fire station.
Upon arrival, civil defence officers led the group from
one station to another, explaining the daily routine of a
firefighter. The children were all brimming with excitement,
when they hitched a ride on the bright red fire engine and
ambulance. They also could not wait to get their hands on
the water hose, putting out a mock fire. While their little
ones were having fun dressing up in firefighter jackets,
parents were busy snapping photos. The tour ended
with a role-play by firemen, showcasing their readiness
to respond to a fire rescue. Besides the tour, members
also visited the Heritage Museum. It was an eventful visit,
as the Heritage Museum organised several activities, to
keep the children entertained. Members had a fun-filled
Saturday morning, whilst gaining a better understanding

what better way to capture these wonderful moments
than taking a group photo at our photo booth!
As guests stepped into the Ballroom, they were amazed

Robotic Pool Cleaner
Cleaning made easy
by SHYAMALA NAGULESWARAN
A s a swimming club, our pride and joy are our swimming
pools. The cleaning and maintenance of our swimming
pools are by no means an easy feat. Due to the sizes of
the various swimming pools, cleaning is time-consuming
and laborious. This is where our Robotic Pool Cleaner
a.k.a the “Pool Vacuum Cleaner” comes in handy. It
works exactly like a vacuum cleaner, the only difference
– it is completely automated, increasing efficiency and
effectiveness.
This second generation electrically powered Robotic
Cleaner is used to clean the pool once a week – every
Monday night from 11pm to 4am. Cleaning is done at night
when the pool is not in use to minimise inconvenience to
members.
The Robotic Pool Cleaner is able to collect debri and
sediment from the swimming pool floor with minimal
human intervention. Its in-built sensors allow it to navigate
the pool with relative autonomy. When the Robotic
Cleaner’s sensors detect obstacles, it bounces off them
by backing up, rotating and moving forward until it finds a
clear path and continues cleaning.
The Robotic
Pool Cleaner is
also able to
clean parts of
the pool that
are not easily
accessible
or cannot be
cleaned by the
cleaners. 

upcoming Games, by playing a friendly with Singapore
Polytechnic Graduates’ Guild (SPGG) on 12 October.
A total of 20 bowlers from each club competed in a
three-game series. Our bowlers were all geared up, as
they won convincingly with a score of 23-2.
Many friendships were forged during that game, and
the return leg will be played at SPGG Bowling Centre in
January 2015. 

National Day Soccer Cup: 4 October
Goal!
by MUSTAJAB KASSIM
T he National Day Soccer Cup 2014 was rescheduled to
4 October hosted by the Indian Association (IA) at their
club house. Held annually, this event aims to foster good
relations between SSC and IA.
Having lost the cup to IA last year, we were determined
to bring the cup home this time round. Both teams
exchanged handshakes prior to the commencement of
the game.
SSC gave the first blow to IA in the first half through our
‘boy wonder’, Dharvin, by scoring a goal. IA piled on the
pressure and was almost rewarded with a goal but was
denied the chance by our veteran goalkeeper and captain,
Sylvester, through a brilliant diving save. Undeterred by
the attack, we continued to press on and Alex Chow, one
of our youngest players, managed to sneak in a header,
advancing SSC to a 2-0 lead at half-time.
Revising their strategy, IA scored two goals within a
span of 10 minutes in the beginning of the second half.
From then on, it became harder as the game levelled for
National Day Cup presented to SSC Soccer Convenor, Mr Aman
Singh(right)
both teams. IA almost managed a third goal but it was
cleared by Ashwin who slid in to block the shot on the
goal line in a last-ditch effort. Through teamwork and
sheer determination, SSC engineered an attack which
Alex Chow converted with the winning goal.
Overall, it was a great match with non-stop action. The
Challenge Cup was presented to Mr Aman Singh, SSC
Soccer Convenor, while Dharvin was awarded the ‘Man of
the Match’ title. We played our best and came home with
a well-deserved victory! 

Distance Swim Awards Kick and Swim Meet
by CONDREY LIU
by CONDREY LIU
T he Distance Swim Award is offered by the SSC four
times a year to all members, as a motivation for them to
increase their swim distance every year. These distances
range from 200m all the way to 3000m. The third Distance
Swim of 2014 had a sign
up rate of six members,
with five swimming in the
200m and the last member
swimming in the 1500m
category. For their efforts,
all participants received
a certificate as well as a
badge which they could
collect as part of a set. The next Distance Swim will be
held on 14 December 2014.
We would like to encourage our members to challenge
themselves and try swimming longer distances every
year! 
T he second Kick and Swim Meet of the year was held
on 25 October. This Meet was organised for swimmers
enrolled in the Learn to Swim Programme, allowing them
to experience different levels of competition as they
progress to higher levels in the programme.
Our 33 young swimmers participated in the competition, showing off their resilience and determination.
Although they were not the best or fastest swimmers,
they remained undaunted and performed to the best of
their abilities. As such, their efforts did not go unnoticed.
We hope that our swimmers will continue to participate in
the Meets ahead.
The Swimming Department started a new initiative,
whereby a set of four collar pins were given
n
to swimmers as a souvenir, with one design
at each Meet. At this particular Meet,
swimmers had the opportunity to collect
the second of four designs available. 

20th SSC Open Invitational Midget Meet: 13 and 14 September
Champions!
by CONDREY LIU
T he Challenge Trophy has finally come home. The
Singapore Swimming Club is now Champion once again,
after winning the 20th SSC Open Invitational Midget Meet,
since the last victory in 2007. The Meet was held on 13
and 14 September, catering to swimmers under the age
of 9 years old.
This year, there were a total of 11 local clubs and four
foreign clubs (Philippines, Vietnam and two from China)
participating in this event. A total of 361 swimmers from the
15 clubs competed against each other for top honours in
their respective age groups. Fourty-two young swimmers
represented SSC in the competition, aiming to improve on
last year’s performance. Due to good weather, the meet
progressed smoothly and was completed on time.
Congratulations to all our young swimmers who have
done the Club proud! It is not just the medallists who
won the Meet. Each and every swimmer who took part,
clocked in valuable points for the team. It was only with
those hard-earned points that we, as a team, managed to
win the Challenge Trophy.
SSC would like to extend our thanks to all our officials,
team managers, staff and parents who have contributed
to the event in one way or another. To all swimmers, we
would like to build on our success. Continue training hard
and attend your training sessions regularly. The results of
your hard work will definitely come to fruition. Our young
swimmers have just proved it. Well Done! 

What is Hatha Yoga?
Myth
Yoga consists of complex sets of physical exercises and meditation for long periods
of time.
Reality
Hatha yoga comprises a series of exercises and breathing techniques that do not
cause strain and imbalances in the body. It is suitable for people of all age groups
to get and stay in shape. In addition, it also helps to stretch and tone the muscles
and joints as well as improve blood circulation.
Benefits of Yoga
Yoga nurtures a positive outlook as it benefits the physical, mental, emotional and
spiritual aspects of our lives. Daily practice increases body awareness, sharpens
focus and concentration, develops balance and coordination as well as promotes
relaxation.
Instructress Profile
Ms Sakina has been a Yoga practitioner for more than 20 years and has been
teaching for 15 years. She is a full-time teaching member at the International Yoga
Teachers’ Association (Sydney) and has completed a course on Yoga for specific
aliments through the Bihar School of Yoga Society (Munger, India).
