We have all your needs for yourself and for your boat! 15% off On All PYC Ship’s Store Merchdise Expires December 31st Marina Manager Reminder As we end another year make sure we have updated copies of your vessels information. Check your boat! During the winter months, it is a great time of year to take a closer look at your boat and its surroundings! A lot of boaters tend to winterize and forget about their boat till spring…out of sight out of mind. Whether you winterize or not, don’t forget about it! Take advantage of the down time, inspect and make a list of all the items you will need to make it through the winter safely and Harry Smith be ready for spring. Usually when the weather gets nice, all you Marina Manager can think about is getting back on the water as quickly as possible. Everyone typically will not think or take the time to look at the items you can’t see on a day to day basis. Power cords are one those items. You only see the part that goes into the boat and the part that goes into the pedestal. Never do you inspect the cord closely, remembering the part ran under the dock. Cords can become chaffed over time and or chewed by muskrats. Exposed cords, drooped into the water, can be very dangerous, causing electrocution and also cause expensive damage to outdrives. Loose connections are another problem that can cause arching and can potentially cause a fire and or damage to the boat. Remember the cords do not last forever and will need be replaced sooner or later! Note: Before conducting any kind of power cord inspection make sure the power is OFF! Neglecting areas and items you can’t see can result in damage to your boat and others! All vessels moored in the state of North Carolina for more than 90 days must be registered in North Carolina! The Club needs the following information: Vessel Registration Vessel Insurance General Boat information (make, model, year) For all necessary forms please contact the Club. Ship’s Store-704-895-8996 x28 [email protected] 4 Examine the picture above and notice which way the flag is blowing. As the boat moves forward the natural flow of the wind should make the flag “wave” aft; however, in this particular case the flag is being sucked inward by what is most commonly called “back draft or the station wagon effect” therefore allowing the CO gases to accumulate in the cabin, cockpit or in the bridge area! To learn more about CO gases please plan to attend our free CO Poisoning Workshop December 6 10am-12pm Contact Harry Smith at [email protected] or 704-892-9858 x28 48-Hr Cancellation Policy Applies to All Club Events Commodore’s Comments December is loaded with so many holiday related events highlighted by the always spectacular 18th Annual Lighted Boat Parade on Saturday the 13th. This year’s theme is “Christmas Around the World”. On the 14th Santa will be joining us at the Brunch with Santa! And close out the year at the Club on New Year’s Eve with a “Night in Paris” themed dinner accompanied by the QC Jazztet! As we near the conclusion 2014, a hearty appreciation goes out to PYC ownership, management and staff for a fantastic, fun and unprecedented year. Thanks very much to all the members and guests who turned out in record numbers to support the club. You all made this year ROCK! Special gratitude goes out to the volunteers of the Fleet and Social Committees. I have been privileged and honored to serve as your 2014 Commodore. By far the most rewarding aspect of my tenure has been developing so many new friendships and watching PYC flourish. It will only get better as Bob Curran will be taking over the helm as our 2015 Commodore. He will be accompanied by John Johnson as Vice Commodore, Mike Miller as Rear Commodore and a group of highly qualified and dedicated individuals. Chris Cawley Commodore As a fan of quotes and lyrics, I’ll conclude with a few of my favorite nautical themed ones: 2014 Fleet Committee Clement Caddell Chris Cawley Past Commodore John Johnson Rear Commodore Commodore Carole Houle Secretary Bill Sorvillo Power Fleet Captain Mike Miller Treasurer John Camp Bob Curran Vice Commodore Joshua Dobi Purser Paul Doucette Power Fleet Commander Sail Fleet Captain David Goodman Helene Sorvillo “A lot of people ask me if I was shipwrecked, and I could only have one book, what would it be? I always say ‘How to Build a Boat’.” - Stephen Wright “The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.” - William A. Ward “I want a boat that drinks 6, eats 4, and sleeps 2.” - Earnest K. Gann “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones that you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain My wife Debbie and I wish all of you a cheerful holiday season and a fantastic new year ahead. 2015 will be exciting and fun at PYC! See you at the club!
