AND SIL'ENr .Jt'UC'1ION
The Annual Chili Cook-off and Silent Auction will be held at the January meeting.
The cook-off and Silent Auction will begin at 4 pm and the meeting will begin at 6 pm.
Have you found any items to be donated for the Silent auction? You can donate any item you have at home that
is new or in excellent condition, or you can contact local merchants for donations. In the past, dinners have
been donated by local restaurants plus many other business establishments.
Don't forget the chili cook-off. Dust off your favorite recipe and get cooking. With the recent cold weather,
you probably have made a pot of chili to ward off the cold. If it turned out perfect or needs improving, remember the ingredients and compete with your fellow veterans and for the grand prize of the cook-off.
Bring your best chili
and don't forget to bring the items for the
SILENT AUCTION

NEW V A DIRECTOR
WREATH'S ACROSS AMERICA
Mr. Jon Skelly has been named as the Western Area
Director in the Office of Field Operations at the Veterans Benefits Administration. Mr. Skelly, who assumed
his duties Nov. 30, 2014, will provide direction and
oversight for more than 4,000 employees in 15 regional
offices. The Western area includes Montana, Idaho,
Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, California, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii
and the Philippines.
The day was a fantastic one, with spectacular
weather and lots of willing volunteers. There were
more people at the cemetery than any previous time,
paying their respects and simply saying thank you to
those that served.
Since 2012, Mr. Skelly served as the Director for the
Salt Lake City VA Regional Office, where he also
served as the Director of the Anchorage and Fort Harrison VAROs. In this position, he was responsible for
the administration of benefits and services to more than
330,000 Veterans living in Utah, Montana and Alaska.
These three offices provided nearly $98 million in
monthly federal benefits, through a variety of compensation, education and vocational rehabilitation and employment programs.
Mr. Skelly is a Veteran of the
United States Army and began his VA career as a management analyst at VBA's Central Office in WashingtonD.C.
The cemetery is now beaming in spectacular beauty
in an ocean of wreaths, as far as you can see. This
year 45,000 resting places of our fallen heroes, were
covered with a wreath.
Thank you to everyone who participated on December 13th.
Cleanup of the wreaths will be January 17th at 8 am.
Mr. Skelly is the nephew of member Ray Priger of
Houston.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!

SOCKS & CAPS DONATION...
Ann Habinak, daughter of member, Al & Sarah Habinak,
recently visited with Don Napp. The purpose of this visit
was to give Don a large sack full of socks, courtesy of
Walmart.
Ann is an executive with Walmart and their
generosity did not end there. She met with the managers
of the stores she is over. The result of these meetings was
a total of $500 in gift cards from the stores under her leadership. One store, #768 in Katy, donated two $50.00 gift
cards. A special thank you to this store.

I'm sure you will enjoy this ....
I never knew one work in English language that can be a..noun, verb, adj, adv. Prep. - UP
This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is UP. It is listed in the
dictionary as an [adv], [prep], [adj.], [n] or [v].
It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do
we wakeUP?
At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election (if there is a tie,
it is a toss UP) and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report, We call UP our fiends, brighten UP a room, polish
UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car.
At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite,
and think UP excuses.
To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.
And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is blocked UP.
We open UP a store in the morning, but we close it up at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP.

KEEPING IN TOUCH - SICK BAY
HOME AT LAST
CONGRATULATIONS!! !
M..I.A. Army medic, Sgt. Gilberto Sanchez, is
finally home after 64 years.
Carlos & Martha Ballard, welcomed a new Great
Grandson into the family at Christmas. Youngest
grandson Colton & wife Kendall Crossley welcomed
Baby Brecken, the day after Christmas.
Brecken
weighed 7 lb. 6 oz. and was 19.5". Mom and the
baby are all doing great and
~- the
baby
is
beautiful
(of
course).
Sgt. Sanchez went missing in 1950 during a particularly brutal battle, and for 64 years, his family had
no idea what happened to him.
They finally got the call they'd waited decades for.
A forensics lab in Hawaii identified the soldier's
remains and Sgt. Sanchez would be coming home.
Sgt. Sanchez will be laid to rest Friday, January 23,
2015, in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. A
horse-drawn carriage will carry the casket. The
family invites the public to attend and say thank
you. The time has yet to be determined.
GOD is good.
There will also be an evening celebration Wednesday, January 21 at the VFW in New Braunfels.
We shared this story last month
MORE CONGRATULATIONS .•...
~V.A. HOSPITAL CHRISTMAS PARTY
On Saturday, December 20th, the Korean Central Presbyterian Church of Houston, hosted the annual Christmas party at the V.A. Hospital.
The evening began by everyone entering the door of the
auditorium receiving a Christmas gift. After the TLSC
posted the colors, the MC, John Jo of the KCPCH began
the evening by drawing for door prizes. A movie was
shown depicting the new Dynamic Korea, this was followed by the Jin Do Drum Dance, the Youth Orchestra,
a TaeKwon Do demonstration and the Korea Fan Dance.
In between all these wonderful acts, there were more
drawings for gifts.
At the close of the festivities, the color guard retired the
colors, then everyone was treated to a sack lunch which
contained a club sandwich, chips and fruit with a bottle
of water.
Thanks to the Korean Central Presbyterian Church for
hosting another success- ..••ful evening.
As if the birth of a new great grandson is not top
news, another of their grandsons had news of his
own. The Ballard's oldest grandson, Chad, took his
fiance, Christine to Chicago.
Chad always calls
Christine his little Love Bean because she's so small.
There is a famous silver sculpture of a huge bean in
Chicago, outside an art museum that reflects everything around it. So he
took Little Bean to see
Big Bean, it was snowing, he got on his knees
& proposed. ??? Guess
we would understand
better if we were 27 &
29. They made it back
in time for Christmas
Day with all of us.
More Random Thoughts
.
I'm going to retire and live off of my savings. Not
sure what I'll do that second week.
Of course I talk to myself, sometimes I need expert
advice.
