VISION: Many people, many families, one community.
MISSION STATEMENT: Promote cultural understanding and celebration of diversity
within our community.
GOALS:
1. Building respect among our diverse groups while supporting cultural identity.
2. Promoting social and economic justice.
3. Promoting religious and racial respect.
In keeping with our mission and goals, The SCU Task Force is sponsoring an essay
contest. This contest will conclude with a cultural diversity celebration in March
featuring food, songs, and dances of different cultures from Ketchikan.
ESSAY PARTICULARS:
1. There are three essay divisions: middle school, high school and adult.
2. Each division will have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner. First prize for all divisions
will be $50 cash. Winners will be honored and presented prizes at the cultural
diversity celebration in March 2015 when excerpts from the essay of each winner
will be read.
Due date: February 13, 2015 – Essays may be turned in at the school offices, the
Ketchikan Wellness Coalition office, the Ketchikan Public Library, or Parnassus book
store.

ESSAY CONTEST GUIDELINES

Prompt: In an essay of no more than 500 words, describe or explain what cultural
diversity means to you.
Cover Page to include:
1. Name, Address, Phone number, and Years in Ketchikan.
2. Division: middle school, high school or adult.
3. Date Submitted
4. Title
Essay: No more than 2 typed and double spaced pages in Word document. Handwritten
essays are acceptable. Essays should be limited to a maximum of 500 words.
Essay evaluation guidelines:
Volunteer judges from the SCU Task Force and community will review the essays
utilizing a grading rubric designed by the Task Force. The largest weight will be given
to the essay aspects including inspiration, engagement of the reader, and originality. Also
considered will be how clearly and concisely thoughts are presented in the main
components of the essay (introduction, body, conclusion). A small part of judging will be
devoted to how closely the formatting directions are followed and the number of
grammatical errors.
