One hundred twenty-five years ago, a group of investors came to
Paducah and constructed the original water works plant on the shores of
the Ohio River. Since then, Paducah Water has thrived as part of the
community and surrounding area.
Now, through October of 2010, PW will
celebrate that history and 125 Years of Quality.
In 1903, just a few years after the company
was established, The Paducah Water Company,
as it was then known, became one of the first
water treatment facilities in the country to
operate using a state-of-the-art sand filtering process. This process
solidified the utility as a leader in innovation and became an industry
standard for years to come.
By 1911, more than 40 miles of water mains had been installed and
in 1938, The Paducah Water Company began an aggressive expansion
project, including the construction of the Forest Hills Reservoir, which is
still in use today.
In 1930, The Paducah Water Company was purchased by the city
with a $2 million bond issue and was renamed Paducah Water Works.
In the 1950's, the company was again on the cutting edge. The
water treatment facility switched from coal
and steam powered pumps to electric.
In 1984, Paducah Water Works continued
to grow and the $15 million treatment facility
on North 8th Street was built.
Being part of the community has always
been an important part of PW's mission and
our past demonstrates that commitment.
For example, in 1996, PW's former treatment facility at First St. and
Kentucky Ave. was demolished to make way for the Carson Center.
It is important that we, as a society, remember our past. We can
learn from it, grow from it and revel in the accolades. That is not to say
we should sit on the laurels of past achievements.
PW has had a past filled with honors and innovations and we will
continue that tradition for the next 125 years.
Reidland Project Set
To Move Forward
In last quarter's On Tap, you read about
Paducah Water's plans to enhance reliability and
ensure adequate water supply in the Reidland area
by tying the system into the Paducah Treatment
Facility.
PW is moving forward with those
plans with bids for the work set to be
put out soon. The project includes the
installation of about 37,000 feet of new
water main from the Southside pump
station to the Said Rd. area, a new two
million gallon storage tank and a new
pump station.
Construction should begin by the
end of the year. PW estimates the
project will take about one year to
complete.
On Tap, will keep you updated
on the project as it moves forward.
30 Years of History
This quarter's issue of On Tap has a certain
historical feel to it. PW is beginning the
celebration of 125 years of service
to the region and we could not be
doing that without the support and
guidance of the company's board.
For nearly a quarter of
PW's 125-year history, W.J.
Brockenborough has been a
member of the Commissioners of Waterworks.
After 30 years on the board, more than 20 of
which as chair, Jim has decided to retire.
Jim as been instrumental in many of PW's
biggest projects including the construction of the
Treatment Facility on North 8th Street.
PW will honor Jim with a reception soon.
In the meantime, he will be missed as a strong
advocate for PW and a dedicated member of the
organization.
Fall Construction Getting Underway
Summer construction projects to enhance water quality and ensure reliable service are
wrapping up. However, the fall weather still provides Paducah Water with good conditions to
continue our Master Plan improvement projects.
PW is finishing the replacement of 1,400 feet of a 6-inch water main alongside Bloom Ave.
The old line was prone to breaks and was affecting service reliability in the area.
Deisgn work is progressing for the replacement
of a 3,400 foot section of main on Schneidman
Rd. and the beginning of the Reidland Project,
which you can read more about in the story above.
