 25 years
of cooperation
From potato field
to paper
AKV was founded in 1933,
and was for many years a
member – along with the
other Danish potato starch
manufacturers – of Kartoffelmelscentralen (KMC) a
collective potato starch sales
organization. In 1986, AKV proposed starting up production
of wheat starch in addition to potato starch to KMC. AKV was
unable to convince the other members of KMC to implement
this plan, and, in the autumn of 1987, the company decided to
resign its membership in KMC. This left AKV without a sales
organization.
Our Story
At the same time, the multi-national company CPC (later
Cerestar) was looking at extending its product portfolio to
include potato starch and contacted AKV to propose a partnership. This led to the establishment of a joint venture in the
autumn of 1987. The joint company was named Cerestar-AKV
I/S and was domiciled in Langholt.
The joint venture agreed to build a jointly-owned facility for
the modification of potato starch to be used by the paper industry. The facility was utilizing a newly developed process which
only consumed very limited quantities of water. The facility
began production in 1988 and has been in operation, without
any modifications, ever since. In 2001, Cerestar was acquired by
Cargill and the company’s name became Cargill-AKV I/S.
The key raw material in
Cargill-AKV I/S’ production
process is potato starch,
which the company sources
from the co-operative society
AKV Langholt A.m.b.a. The
co-operative (AKV) is coowned by 173 potato farmers, who each have their own individual AKV potato production quota. Of these, some 140 farmers
supply potatoes to AKV, while the rest have transferred their
quota to other members. AKV’s members are domiciled in the
Northern Jutland region of Denmark.
The Raw Material
Each year, AKV receives approximately 1,9 million tons of
potatoes farmed from a 4,000 ha area. When processed, this
equals approximately 40,000 tons of potato starch. Potatoes
are delivered to AKV’s factory by the farmers themselves or by
local carriers. Only potato varieties with high starch contents
are used (approx. 19.5% starch content compared to the 8-10%
starch in potatoes grown for food).
In order to help ensure that the raw material AKV receives is
of the highest possible quality, AKV provides extensive consultation services to the individual potato farmers, and also runs
its own experimental fields where a range of potato variety,
pesticide and fertilizer trials are carried out.
Since 1976, AKV has manufactured potato starch from
its factory in Langholt. The
addition of a new facility
for manufacturing cationic
starches in 1987 represented
a significant expansion of
the company’s facilities. Over the years, the company has expanded both its potato and cationic starch production at the
same time as adjusting its products to meet the requirements
of the paper industry.
The Factory Facilities
All our products are manufactured on a continual basis, and
our processes involve the most up to date technology and process management. Our production personnel are all specially
trained and possess the necessary range of skills to take on the
many tasks which modern process manufacturing demands of
them. All products are continually controlled during production, both in a joint and in an external laboratory.
The potato starch is manufactured during the autumn for
storage in silos. It is the raw material for production of
starches for the industry. Our storage capacity of more than
40,000 tons is sufficient to allow us to store an entire year’s
production of potato starch. Our production processes are so
refined that we have almost no waste material and the chemicals we use are all handled in accordance with the relevant
safety regulations. As we have several silos in which to store
our finished product we are highly flexible. The majority of our
finished product is supplied in containers or silo trucks, with
less and less being delivered in bags.
A portion of the potato starch we produce is packed in small
bags for sale to the food industry. Our production processes
meet the very highest international standards (ISO 9000, FSSC
22000 etc.).
In Langholt we run a modification process whereby
we produce a wide range of
cationic potato starches to be
used in a variety of applications in the paper and board
industries. The process is environmentally friendly as there are no waste products at all.
The Cationic Potato Starches
The cationic starch is mainly used in wet-end systems to improve retention of filler and fines. The starch also increases the
strength of the paper and boards. These improvements make it
possible to utilise less expensive raw materials or make a better
quality product.
Another area in which the cationic starch is working perfectly
is as an emulsifier for ASA sizing. The products produced get a
surface property resulting in better printability.
We also produce a special grade of ionic potato starch for enzymatic degradation into a surface sizing starch. Copy paper and
book papers are treated with this type of starch with good results.
The fourth application of our ionic starch is spraying. Here, the
large granule potato starch provides high mechanical retention
when added between the plies in a multi layer paper or board
construction. As the starch is cationic, it has a high self retention when it partly comes back to the wet-end as re-circulated
broke. A cleaner wet circuit of the paper or board machine can
thereby be seen.
Our starches are treated with different types of equipment
before being used by the customers. To secure the efficiency
of the products we have designed equipment such as cookers,
converters, big-bag handling units, spraying systems etc. This
type of equipment is in production today and is sold through
our machinery partners.
For 25 years, Cargill-AKV I/S
has delivered cationic paper
starches to customers across
Europe, and shown that both
the company’s construction and the relationship
between the two owners are
durable and profitable. Both companies, Cargill and AKV, own
50 % of the joint venture Cargill-AKV I/S.
The Partnership
AKV produces and delivers the potato starch to the joint venture, which is fully integrated in the Langholt production site,
and undertakes daily production, quality control and delivery.
Cargill has worldwide sales responsibility for the joint venture
and undertakes commercial as well as product and process
development.
Cargill-AKV I/S is managed by the Managing Director from
Langholt and the Sales Director from Cargill Nordic. Both report to an international executive board which includes representatives from both companies. Sales and technical services
are supplied from Cargill’s network of European experts. The
company shares knowledge with Cargill’s other production
sites and benefits from consultation with specialists working in
development and utilization laboratories.

The potato starch products
are transported to customers by approved carriers.
They either use silo trucks
or trucks carrying 20- or
30-foot containers. Carriers
must pass an audited and
approved cleaning station where both trucks and containers are
cleaned before loading at Langholt.
Transportation
to Customers
In 2011, we transported more than 42,000 tons of potato
starches from Cargill-AKV I/S to customers all over the world,
whereas our modified products are delivered mainly to customers in the Nordic region and Western Europe.
A key priority when it comes to transportation is to deliver
the optimal quantity at the requested time. We call it OTIF
– On Time In Full. When supplying to the Nordic customers
we make use of container stocks to limit the lead-time and to
make sure that we can supply our customers without delay.
This requires a close collaboration between customers, sales,
production, logistics and carriers.

Paper and Board customers have since the start of
Cargill-AKV I/S been the targeted focus. The products
have been successfully used
in production of all kind of
products. It can either be
uncoated papers for copying, pocket books, newspaper and
SC-papers or coated papers as LWC for magazines and fine
papers for nicely printed brochures etc.
Our Customers
The high cationic starches we produce work well in systems
where there is a high degree of waste paper used. It could be
grades such as 100% waste base copy paper or a production of
mechanical based paper with an almost closed wet-end.
Board production which normally has high taste and odour
demands normally prefer a potato based product as wet-end or
spray addition. There are a lot of liquid packaging boards for
milk or juice as well as boards for chocolate or food products
that use our wet-end starches.
Our customers are mostly major multi-national companies and
manufacturers of high quality paper and boards. By delivering
a superior product and trying to meet our customers’ future
demands we aim at being a partner of choice. It helps us focus
on the further development.
One thing is clear; Cargill-AKV I/S will be on the market for
many years ahead, serving the paper and board industries with
competitive solutions.
