MAY 2014 Iyar / Sivan 5774 Shir Ami is a Reform Congregation, proudly affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism A Message From Our Clergy Cantor Mark Elson A Few Words About Rabbis and Cantors In just a few more weeks I will be losing my clergy partner, the Rabbi with whom I have worked for nearly thirty years. Of course, Rabbi Strom will still be part of Shir Ami as our Rabbi Emeritus, and of course, his tremendous influence will always be felt here. And I’m sure that we will continue to seek his advice on a variety of things over the next several years. But the day to day working relationship I have shared with him for so long will be coming to an end. There are a great many things I will miss as I continue on at Shir Ami without Elliot here on a daily basis. After so long a time together we have become very good at understanding and anticipating each other on, or off, the Bimah, even though we may be far apart. Visitors to Shir Ami often have remarked about how smooth and seamless our services seem in comparison to other places they have attended. That is no accident, as we have developed a wonderful rapport and appreciation of each other’s styles. I will miss the sense of collegiality we share. I don’t mean to suggest that I will not have this with Rabbi Kosovske or our future Rabbi. But from the beginning, Rabbi Strom accepted me as a colleague and full clergy partner. That rom! Celebrate Rabbi St SHABBAT 6, 2014 FRIDAY MAY 1 DINNER DANCE relationship has been important and precious to me. I have tremendous respect for Elliot’s abilities as a Rabbi and have always felt from him that he has great respect for my abilities as a Cantor. I hope and trust I will have similar relationships with the Rabbis who follow Elliot, but our respect for each other has been truly important. I will miss Rabbi Strom’s excellence as a speaker and teacher. Just because a person has been ordained a rabbi doesn’t mean they will be good at the job. I’ve heard more than my share of mediocre (or worse) teachers and speakers who have the title. Rabbi Strom is gifted in this area and we have been the fortunate recipients of his gifts. I know I’ve made jokes about them in other places, but here I’m serious when I say that his sermons are among the best I have heard anywhere, and that he is a truly excellent teacher who knows how to engage his learners on any topic. I will miss his sense of humor and quick wit, and the banter we often engage in with each other and with members of the staff or Board. He doesn’t take himself too seriously, is able to accept and laugh at a good natured joke at his expense – just be ready to get one aimed right back with lightning speed. Even in the midst of our busy work lives we’ve been able to laugh together. I look forward to this aspect of our relationship continuing, albeit with less frequency. I will miss his ability to always respond with what seems to be the right words and tone to any situation, whether it be a baby crying in services or a difficult question raised in a discussion. I will 2014 SATURDAY MAY 17, Main: 215.968.3400 Religious School: 215.968.3254 E.L.C.: 215.968.6255 101 Richboro Road • Newtown, PA 18940 • www.shiraminow.org miss the good advice he has often given me. I will miss seeing and feeling the way he has counseled the troubled, consoled the grieving, comforted the ill, and rejoiced with all of us celebrating simchas. I will miss him as my drinking buddy as we raised a glass at the conclusion of Neilah on Yom Kippur while reflecting on another successful series of Holy Day services, or several glasses before and during our Purim celebrations. I have learned a great many things watching Rabbi Strom and working with him for all these years, and I will miss the opportunities to watch and continue learning from him. I’m sure there is much more that I will realize I miss as I begin working with new Rabbis. But we have had a very, very good run. I know with certainty that the length of our time together and the quality of our relationship is (sadly) rare among Rabbis and Cantors, and I am as grateful for that as I can possibly be. Elliot, thank you for being such an important part of my lives, both professional and personal, for these nearly thirty years. Barbara and I wish you every good thing in the future as you enter what I am sure will be a very active and full retirement. I know you will be available to me and to Shir Ami whenever we need to call upon you, and so I look forward to those times when we may have opportunities to work together, or just be together, again. May God bless you and your family, and all you will be doing from now on, for a very long time to come. They are a part of every preschooler’s daily routine in school. They count numbers on a calendar, children in a classroom, candles for Shabbat, and how many crackers they are eating for snack. They are taught numbers on a clock, numbers in a book, and numbers on a telephone. Shir Ami children also learn about 8 candles for Chanukah, 4 questions for Passover, 10 commandments for Shavuot, and 1 God. As adults and parents, we are also engrossed in numbers as part of our daily routine. Of course for us, we deal with numbers in many different ways and on many different levels. Now let’s talk about our ELC numbers. We have 1 Director, 1 Assistant Director, and 1 Camp Director. We also have 25 teachers, 4 PlayCare assistants, 3 Specialists, 1 Learning Specialist, and 1 Family Therapist. All this for our 123 children. So why am I filling your head with all these numbers? Just as numbers are important in your life and your child’s life, numbers are important in the life of our ELC. We need the children to keep our school vibrant. We want to keep our school and camp alive. We want to continue to touch the lives of children and give them learning experiences that will stay with them for a lifetime. It is our goal to teach numbers for many years to come. You can help us do that. Refer young families to our wonderful school. Let people know about your amazing learning experiences here at the Shir Ami Early Learning Center. Rabbi Gutterman will speak at Friday evening Shabbat worship, May 30, 2014 at 7:30 pm on “The Jew in the Pew: The 2013 Pew Research Survey of US Jews — Obituary or Opportunity?” He will lead the Torah discussion at Chevrat Torah the following morning. The Jew in the Pew: The 2013 Pew Research Survey of US Jews - Obituary or Opportunity? Some seven months ago, the Pew Research Forum released a survey of American Jews that is causing tremors in the American Jewish community. The survey confirms our anxieties that the two barometers of Jewish life are still very much in jeopardy - on the one hand, Jewish continuity, and, on the other, Jewish identity. Rather than read this survey as a call to say kaddish for American Jewry, might there be another way to view its findings that can lead to hope? This is a conversation that is both urgent and provocative. No matter where we are in the denominational Jewish world, this is a wake up call to all of us. We are all challenged by this survey even as we are all equally called upon to respond. BIO - Rabbi David Gutterman was the Executive Director of the VAAD: Board of Rabbis of Greater Philadelphia and the Director of Jewish Resources at the Jewish Federation for almost 10 years. Many of you will recognize him from his popular weekly insights entitled, InTORAHnet that often appeared in the Jewish Exponent. He recently returned from South Florida where he was appointed the Senior Community Scholar for Yeshiva University and the inaugural director of the Yeshiva University Center for Jewish Learning: South Florida. A much sought-after speaker, Rabbi Gutterman has lectured, taught and presented in many venues across the United States in communal settings and academic forums, as well as in England and Israel. He holds two rabbinic ordinations (s’mikhot), an MA in Religious Studies and Theology conferred by Sacred Heart University in Connecticut in which he was awarded that graduate school’s Award for Academic Excellence, and has completed course work towards a Doctorate in Rabbinic Literature and History at the Graduate School of Jewish Theological Seminary. In his words, “I am a voracious reader, a perpetual student, an unapologetic lover of the entire Jewish people, a good bowler, a frustrated golfer - but most of all, the most cherished, treasured and blessed name that I carry is Saba - grandfather to Ariel Daizy, Elior Aharon, Liel Yulian and newly born, Elnatan Maoz.” 8 9 Groups & Auxilliaries FOREVER YOUNG PRESENTS a comedic cabaret performance with Karen Gross A classy, sassy cabaret singer, songwriter, and comedienne, Karen charms audiences with her warmth, wit, and gorgeous, heartfelt voice. The head of the family speaks: At this moment which bears the memory of our beloved (name), let us join hands in a token of God’s grace. A link has been broken in the chain of affection which has long bound us together, yet the blessed bonds of home and love remain. With prayerful heart, we receive this divine gift of life which holds us together in family unison. Eternal God, we thank You that, in this time of sadness and loss, You have helped to keep us strong. Though the pain of our loss is still present for us, we know that love will always be stronger than death. And so, to You, we lift our hearts, because we know that our loved one continues to be a living presence in our lives. We acknowledge your mercy, O God, who strengthens us with faith and peace. As our loved one lives for us in these words and memories, we kindle this yahrzeit light and sanctify it in the remembrance of the Divine Word: The spirit of humanity is the light of the Lord. (Kindle the Memorial Light.) ZECHER TZADIK LIV-RACHA. May the memory of the righteous be an eternal blessing. DONATIONS FUND Anna Gever Music Fund Anna Gever Music Fund Anna Gever Music Fund Bev.
